Comments: The year was 1965 and as a high school student I was working at a local nursery. That spring I noticed a pink flower on a lower branch of the Rhododendron ‘Unique’ and mentioned it to my boss Bruce Brechtbill. Several cuttings were taken that fall. To make a long story short after Bruce’s death in the early 70’s this rhododendron was named for him. Obviously one of my favorites.
Rhododendron Bruce Brechtbill
This variety belongs to the group of Large-Flowered Evergreen Hybrid Rhododendrons. These are the drama queens of Spring and early Summer, producing stunning displays of showy flowers in big trusses against a backdrop of bold evergreen foliage.
They are ericaceous plants i.e. they require acidic to neutral soils (pH7 or lower) and generally will not thrive in more alkaline conditions (i.e. high in lime, pH7.5 or higher). Being woodland plants, they require moist but well drained soil that is rich in organic matter as well as the dappled shade and shelter of other trees and shrubs. They are also useful subjects for a sheltered North facing border.
Rhododendrons are surface rooting and have very fine roots so extra care is needed when planting, adding in plenty of organic matter (such as leaf mould, peat or good quality ericaceous compost) to the planting area to form a nice friable mixture. They will not thrive if planted too deeply so keep to the same depth as your plant is growing in its pot. Water the plant thoroughly and ensure the plant is thoroughly soaked at its roots at all times during any dry spells.

Description
Best grown in acidic, humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Prefers a sun dappled shade. Plant in a location protected from strong winter winds. Good soil drainage is essential (doesn’t like “wet feet”). Poor drainage inevitably leads to root rot, therefore raised beds/plantings should be considered in heavy clay soils. Shallow, fibrous root systems (do not cultivate around plants) will benefit greatly from a mulch (e.g., wood chips, bark or pine needles) to help retain moisture and stabilize soil temperatures. Roots must never be allowed to dry out. Acidify soils as needed. Clip off spent flower clusters immediately after bloom as practicable.
