Collected here for the first time in one deluxe volume are over 100 of these vintage educational posters now important relics in the history of science, art, and design. We had the good fortune of connecting with katrien van der Schueren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi katrien, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Without risk there is really no business when it comes to creative businesses. Innovation is key to success in our type of work. Every step of the way, each decision, each push for change or for something new means taking a risk in some way. There is no creative new idea without taking the risk to fail at executing it. Sometimes you ll try something and it won’t work. Better to have spent time trying, then spent time thinking about to do it or not. If you see something doesn’t work after all, you can always change route and you ll have learned from it. Not taking the risk of doing it, will slow everything down in stead. If you stay stuck in certain ways and don’t embrace some challenges, I don’t think you can evolve profoundly enough to stay relevant in this industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I love to explore new materials to tell a story. It’s always a challenge and it often requires a lot more studying and playing with the material than anticipated to get some grip on its possibilities. But I love the learning curve in itself and the feeling of understanding how to combine different materials and their potential together is incredibly rewarding. It’s truly exciting to push the boundaries a bit one little step at a time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I definitely take her to the ocean, on a boat if possible. Nature surrounding us in LA is stunning and should make up a good part of the trip, from the beach to mountain trails to the desert. Food wise, LA is such a treasure chest. I d mix it up so we d have a taste of all the different pockets in LA (Venice, Downtown, Miracle Mile, West Hollywood, Silverlake) and the food it comes with from the food truck on olympic and la brea after nine on the weekends to petit trois to some original Korean BBQ etc. Definitely would buy some tickets for the Hollywood Bowl as well and any other worthwhile performances whilst in town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My husband and children, who are always supportive of all steps I take.

OUR PURPOSE

Designer Friday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Katrien van der Schueren

Katrien van der Schueren emanates a love for art. Artist, art historian, designer, and writer, her creative studio Voila! only attests further to her passion. Van der Schueren founded Voila! Creative Studio in 2008 to connect a diverse community of makers to clients across the globe. Leading designers specializing in everything from woodworking to painting, she has brought custom-made furnishings, stage sets, accessories and other artistic items to YouTube, Carolina Herrera, and countless other clients. Van der Schueren has joined her own multifaceted love of art with a strong community of artists at Voila! Introducing this week’s Designer Friday, Katrien van der Schueren.

Voila! Creative Studio lent their art direction to the lobby of the Hotel Californian, seen here. The scintillating space was designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard whom van der Schueren is frequently commissioned by for art direction and custom production of furniture and art pieces.

Andrew Joseph: What is something you hope to see trending in design in the future?

Katrien van der Schueren: Real sustainability that is truly valued. A drastic growth in understanding where and how things are being made and an appreciation and care for sustainable and socially responsible practices within that. Whether something is made with the latest technology or by artisan hands or a combination of it, luxury should be defined by a thoughtful use of resources and an honest supply chain.

Andrew: What are three words to describe where you live?

Katrien: Relaxed bohemian eclectic.

Andrew: What are your ideal weekend plans?

Katrien: Being in nature with my family. Ideally, I’d be on the ocean and on a boat or in the water or close to the water. I find the ocean endlessly inspiring. Pure magic.

Andrew: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?

Katrien: A small, well-thought-of hotel with very well curated design and art somewhere in a beautiful location.

Creators at Voila! collaborated with Kuskin/May Interior Design Studio on this concrete mural for Costa Palmas Resort.

Andrew: Are you a pet person? Why either way? Dogs or cats?

Katrien: I adore pets. We have one cat and one dog. I’d have many more if practicalities in life would be different. I love it when we dog-sit for a dog of a friend sometimes when she travels so we have two dogs for a bit. I like both animals. I have only ever had one cat and our cat behaves a bit like a dog so I am really not the right person to judge. In general, I guess cats are way more independent, whilst dogs are just unconditional lovers and are easier travel companions.

Andrew: What’s inspiring you in life (in the industry) right now?

Katrien: Global connectivity and the capacity to be inspired and source from artisans, artists and designers all around the globe. For example, for a project in Palm Springs, we are now weaving a huge custom tapestry in a remote village in Mexico. They master traditional skills and have access to natural fibers and natural dyes. Most of the process can be followed by distance without any quality issues. Technology truthfully has helped make the world our oyster.

Andrew: Favorite tea to decompress, and in what mug?

Katrien: Green tea with toasted rice in a cup that says in flemish slang ”Ik moet just niks”: which means I just don’t need to do anything at all.

Black and white framed photos and vivid bedding and pillows neutralize light in this beige room.

Andrew: What is the best carb-loaded meal you’ve made thus far?

Katrien: My son, 13, got obsessed with cooking over the pandemic, so I have a personal chef and don’t cook any longer 😉 He started making his own sourdough breads which are absolutely the best I ever tasted.

Andrew: What are some creative ways that you have kept yourself busy during quarantine?

Katrien: Literally two days before quarantine started, we bought a piano. It was a brown wooden one but I painted it pink! We worked quite a bit on the house. All the things we never got to, kind of finally got done. We painted walls, built a gate, and so on.

Andrew: What’s one thing you hate admitting that you love about quarantine?

Katrien: Being home with the kids and my husband and not having a calendar that is full of events that I committed to attend but don’t really want to go to! Pre-quarantine, you sometimes would have 3 events to attend in one evening. That sounds SO last decade right now. I don’t think I will ever get stressed about that again.

Meet Katrien Van Der Schueren of Voila! Creative Studio in West Hollywood – Voyage LA Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrien Van Der Schueren.

Katrien, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I came to the US 14 years ago. I followed my husband who had a job offer in LA. I didn’t have a work permit at first so I couldn’t apply for jobs, but did all the shows and realized there might be a market for vintage posters. I started importing vintage posters and selling them to poster dealers. Quickly, I added art and vintage furniture to the mix and was in a big need for proper custom framing of the work. Dissatisfied with my options, I started framing for myself at first and quickly found that other people were interested in my services. A little later, I opened a first showroom in Los Angeles and gradually developed towards making our own furniture and art compared to importing vintage pieces. Our custom made furniture and art was successful and by now we have an extensive clientele for whom we custom create. Half a year ago, we moved to voila!’s new studio on 749 North La Brea Ave. The building hosts our design team, our artists and our framing artisans. The upholstery, metal work and wood work for furniture happens in South LA.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

Nothing was linear. It was a fascinating road but one with quite some struggles on the way. First off, I had never been self-employed before coming to LA. I had never had my own business, employees nor had I even ever lived in LA or knew anyone out here to hire or to sell to for that matter or to connect with even. So, if I look back, it was kind of crazy and definitely not very thought through 😉 When I opened a showroom in 2008, the crisis happened and ever since I believe showrooms have suffered as to selling anything vintage. Happily, I had evolved towards offering custom services and was able to grow that business successfully. By now, our client base is very solid and we are off to more growth.

Voila! Creative Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

Our company is actually almost two companies. We have the custom framing division where we custom frame art for collectors, galleries, designers etc. We are known for our museum quality framing and offer regular mouldings to custom made metal moldings and hand carved custom finished frames. Besides that voila! is a creative studio. We custom design and make whatever someone needs. Whether that is one chair for a dining room or all furniture and art for a bar or hotel, we custom design and fabricate from concept to final product and anything in between. The difference with other makers is our wide variety of materials we work in as well as the fact that we offer the whole process, we do woodwork, metal work, glass work, finishes and upholstery all in one studio. This saves a lot of clients a lot of time and money working with just one vendor. We are a one stop shop from concept through 3D rendering, modeling, testing and final product or anywhere in between. We are renown for the fact that we get things done within the timeline and the reliability of our work.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?

Personally, I feel successful when I can be proud of what I do, the studio’s work and its team. When I know my clients are happy. When I know the team is enjoying the work we do and I am enjoying it. When there is time enough to find some creative freedom and to feel inspired daily. When there is an enjoyable work/life balance for all. And when there are things I can dream of to achieve next.
