La grasse matinée lyrics + English translation
It is so frightful, the noise
of a hardboiled egg being shelled against a pewter counter.
That noise is so frightful
when it stirs in the memories of the hungry man.
It is frightful too, the head of the man
the head of the hungry man
when it’s 6AM and he looks at his reflection
in the window of the department store.
A head the color of dust.
Still, it’s not at his own head he’s looking at
in the grocery’s window.
The man does not give a damn about his head.
He doesn’t think about it.
He’s musing.
He pictures another head.
A calf’s head for instance,
served with vinegar sauce,
or the head of anything edible,
and he gently works his jaw,
gently,
and he grinds his teeth gently,
because the whole world is taking the mickey out of him
and he can’t defend against this world,
and he’s counting on his fingers: one, two, three.
One, two, three,
it’s been three days since he last ate.
And though he keeps saying to himself
it can’t go on like this,
it does go on.
Three days,
three nights
with nothing to eat,
and behind these windows,
these patés, these bottles, these jars,
dead fishes preserved by cans,
cans sheltered by windows,
windows watched over by cops
cops protected by fear.
So many barricades for a mere half-dozen sardines…
A bit further away, the bar,
flat white and hot croissants.
The man staggers
and inside his head
a haze of words
a haze of words
sardines to eat,
hardboiled egg, flat white
coffee spiked with rhum
flat white
flat white
bled white sprinkled with blood! …
A gentleman well esteemed in his neighbourhood
had his throat slit in broad daylight.
The murderer, a tramp, robbed him
of two francs,
that is a liqueur coffee:
zero dot seventy francs,
two buttered slices of bread
and twenty five cents for the waiter’s tip.
It is so frightful, the noise
of a hardboiled egg being shelled against a pewter counter.
That noise is so frightful
when it stirs in the memories of the hungry man.
Jacques Prévert : La Grasse Matinée
It is terrible
the sound of the broken hard-boiled egg on a tin counter
this noise is terrible
when it moves in the memory of a hungry man
the head of the man is terrible too
the head of a hungry man
when he looks at himself at six in the morning
through the glass of a big store
a dust-colored head
that is not his head even if he’s looking at it
through the showcase of At Potin
he doesn’t care about his head of a man
he doesn’t think of it
he fancies
he fancies another head
a head of a calf for instance
with a vinegar sauce
or a head of anything that is to eat
and he slowly moves his jaw
slowly
and he creaks his teeth slowly
because the world pays off his head
and he can do nothing against this world
and he counts on his finger one two three
one two three
it’s been three days he ate
and it may repeat itself for three days
it can’t last
it lasts
three days
three nights
without eating
and behind these windows
these pasties, these bottles, these conserves
dead fish protected by boxes
boxes protected by windows
windows protected by cops
cops protected by fear
what barricades for six unhappy sardines..
A little further the bistro
coffee with cream and warm croissants
the man hesitates
and inside his head
a mist of words
a mist of words
sardines to eat
hard-boiled egg coffee with cream
coffee and rum
coffee with cream
coffee with cream
coffee with crime laced with blood! ..
A highly esteemed man in his neighborhood
was slit in broad daylight
the assassin vagabond stole him
two francs
fair enough for a laced coffee
zero franc seventy
two buttered sandwiches
and twenty-five cents for the boy’s tip.
It is terrible
the sound of the broken hard-boiled egg
on a tin counter
this sound is terrible
when it moves in the memory of a hungry man.

La Grasse Matinee
Today I woke up and knew that i can’t be bothered to cook. I’m in one of my mercurial moods. My head is spinning after researching for my upcoming spring break. So I figure I shall do a little Rive Gauche, since it’s part of my homework anyway.
[Photo: source]Faire la grasse matinee in french means to sleep in, to sleep further than you use to, or simply just to stay on bed long after you’re awake. But there’s a poem by Jacques Prevert (1900-1977) that I think is really beautiful in a smart way. You’ll see. Translation (mine) is below the original version.
trois jours
trois nuits
sans manger
et derrière ces vitres
ces pâtés ces bouteilles ces conserves
poissons morts protégés par les boites
boites protegees pas les vitres
vitres protegees par les flics
flics proteges par la crainte
que de barricades pour six malheureuses sardines…
un peu plus loin le bistrot
cafe crème et croissants chauds
l’homme titube
et dans l’intérieur de sa tête
un brouillard de mots
un brouillard de mots
sardines a manger
oeuf dur cafe crème
cafe arrose rhum
cafe creme
cafe creme
cafe crime arrose sang!
Un homme très estime dans son quartier
a été égorgé en plein jour
l’assassin le vagabond lui a vole
deux francs
soit un cafe arrose
zero franc soixante-dix

La Grasse Matinee (Literally, The Fat Morning)
It is terrible
the sound of hard boiled egg cracked on top of the metal counter
it is terrible this sound
when it evokes the memory of a man who is hungry
it is also terrible the head of this man
the head of this hungry man
what he sees at 6am
at the glass pane window of a big shop
a head in the colour of dust
but it is not his head that he sees
on the window of Chez Potin – a chain of food store
it is not his head he thinks about
he dreams
he dreams about another head
a veal head for example – a classic dish in french cuisine
with vinegar sauce
or head of anything that is to be eaten
and he move slowly his jaw
slowly
and he grinds his teeth, slowly
because the world is mocking his head
and he can do nothing against this world
and he counts on his finger one two three
one two three
it has been three days since he last ate
and it will repeat itself for the next three days
this can not last
and yet it lasts
three days
three nights
without eating
and behind this glass pane window
those pates those bottles those preserved food
dead fishes protected by the boxes
the boxes protected by the glass pane windows
the windows protected by the cops
the cops protected by the fear
that barricades the six unfortunate sardines
a little further from the bistro
coffee with cream and hot croissants
the man totters
and inside his head
a fog of words
a storm of words
sardines to eat
boiled eggs cream coffee
coffee infused with rum
cream coffee
coffee with cream
coffee with cream sprinkled with blood!
A highly esteemed man of the neighborhood
was slit at the throat on a broad day light
the killer the vagabond robbed him
2 francs
for coffee with alcohol
zero franc 70 cents
2 slices of bread with butter
and 25 cents tips for the little boy
It is terrible
the sound coming out from eggs cracked on the silver metal counter
it is terrible this sound
when it reminds the memory of a man who is hungry

English translation of Jacques Preverts “La Grasse Matinee”?
A tall order!
If you mean the title: ” A morning in bed”.
If you mean the poem itself , here we go:
How dreadful
is the small sound made by the hard boiled egg being cracked against a zinc counter
It is horrible that noise
when it stirs in the memory of the starving man
The head of the man is terrible to see too
The head of the man who is hungry
when he stares at himself at six o’clock in the morning
in the window of the departmental store
A head the colour of dust
Yet it is not his head that he is looking at
in the window of Potin’s
He does not care about his head, the man
He does not think about it
he dreams
he imagines another head
A calf’s head for instance with a vinegar sauce
or the head of anything edible
and he moves his jaws gently
and he grinds his teeth gently
because the world is mocking him
and he can do nothing against that world
He counts on his fingers; one, two, three
three days since he last ate
and even if he repeats to himself “three days
it cannot go on”
it does go on
three days
three nights
without eating
and behind those windows
those pâtés, those bottles, those preserves
dead fish protected by tins
tins protected by windows
windows protected by the police
policemen protected by fear
What a lot of barricades for six miserable sardines
A little further the bistro
cream coffee and hot croissants
The man staggers
and within his head
a fog of words
a fog of words
sardines to eat
hard boiled egg cream coffee
coffee drenched with rhum
cream coffee
coffee crime drenched with blood
A man, well-respected in the neighbourhood,
has had his throat slit in full daylight
The murderer, the tramp has stolen from him
two francs,
in other words a coffee with a top up
zero francs seventy five
two slices of bread and butter
and twenty five centimes for the waiter

when it stirs the memory of a starving man
