Singer and actress Marilyn McCoo was born on September 30, 1943 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her parents, Mary and Waymon McCoo, were both doctors and moved the family to Los Angeles, California when McCoo was seven years old. She graduated from Dorsey High School and went on to attend the University of California-Los Angeles, where she received her B.S. degree in business administration.
In 1962, McCoo entered the Miss Bronze California beauty pageant where she won the Grand Talent award and met Lamonte McLemore, who asked her to join his singing group, the Hi-Fi’s. She went on to perform with Ray Charles and record the single “Lonesome Mood.” The Hi-Fi’s disbanded in 1965, and that same year McCoo, McLemore, Florence LaRue, Ron Townson, and Billy Davis, Jr. formed The Versatiles. The group signed to the Soul City label, changed their name to The 5th Dimension, and recorded their first hit in 1966, “Go Where You Wanna Go.” In 1967, they released “Up, Up, and Away,” which won four Grammy Awards and was the title track to the 5th Dimension’s first hit album. In 1969, The 5th Dimension released The Age of Aquarius. The album’s first single, “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” became a mega-hit and occupied the number one spot on the charts for six weeks. It earned the group two more Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year.
In 1969, McCoo married bandmate Billy Davis, Jr., and in 1975, they left The 5th Dimension. Together, they released 1976’s I Hope We Get To Love In Time, featuring the single, “You Don’t Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show).” The song went straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the duo a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. McCoo and Davis went on to host The Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. Show on CBS in 1977. In the 1980s McCoo hosted the music countdown show Solid Gold. She also had a recurring spot on the soap opera Days of Our Lives in the 1980s, and acted in a number of movies. She appeared on stage in productions of Anything Goes, A…My Name is Alice, Man of La Mancha, and the Broadway production of Show Boat.
McCoo released a solo album, Solid Gold, in 1983, and then a gospel album in 1991 entitled The Me Nobody Knows; its title single went to number one on the gospel charts. She received another Grammy Award the following year for participating as a guest artist on Quincy Jones’ Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, which won Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. In 2004, McCoo and Davis co-authored the book Up, Up and Away…How We Found Love, Faith and Lasting Marriage in the Entertainment World.
McCoo has also earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and The 5th Dimension was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. She has received two honorary doctorate degrees and served on the boards of the Children’s Miracle Network, the Los Angeles Mission, and the Cancer Research Foundation.
Marilyn McCoo was interviewed by The HistoryMakers on July 29, 2014.
The Fifth Dimension’s Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. celebrate 50 years of music and marriage
Not long before the Fifth Dimension released “Up, Up and Away,” the 1967 hit that gave the group its first Top 10 hit, something shifted in the way Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. considered each other.
They’d met in 1965 when along with Florence LaRue, Ronald Townson and LaMonte McLemore they came together as the Versatiles, the pop group’s original name, and soon became close friends, they say.
“Marilyn and I, we started to really click with one another,” Davis says. “Marilyn started to take me to rehearsals because we were staying close to each other, and those rides back and forth to rehearsal, we got closer and closer. And our friendship really started to develop into something —
“Something we didn’t expect!” McCoo says, both of them laughing at the memory.

“You talk about life, you talk about everything,” Davis says. “We had so much in common, the only thing we didn’t have in common was the care for each other. She was a good friend, I was a good friend, and the love bug hadn’t hit yet.
“So we started singing, and it just kept developing after that,” he says.
“Like you say, one thing led to another,” McCoo says.
“And then another, and another, and here we are 50 years later with one another,” Davis says.
McCoo and Davis laugh often and easily as they talk about their life together — they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 26 — and a musical career that brings them to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Aug. 24.
There’s a sunny quality to their conversation that nicely reflects the upbeat harmonies of the Fifth Dimension, a group whose Top 10 hits include such songs as “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In,” and “Wedding Bell Blues.”
And while they left the group in the mid-’70s, leaving the other three to continue under the Fifth Dimension name, which LaRue does to this day, they still sing many of those classic pop songs, both say.
“You’ll hear the hits from that period,” McCoo says. “If they come and say, ‘Oh, we hope they sing this song, we hope they sing that song, well, they’ll probably hear those songs.”
They started as the Versatiles, which Davis says all five thought was “a very hip name,” because each member brought a different kind of vocal and performance to the mix. But when singer Johnny Rivers signed them to his Soul City Record label, with plans for them to cover the Mamas & the Papas’ “Go Where You Wanna Go,” he told their manager the name had to go.
“Everybody went home and was supposed to come back to the meeting the next day with the idea for the group, for a group name,” McCoo says. “And when Ronald told us the Fifth Dimension it was like everybody loved it
“Everybody jumped on it, so we knew that had to be it,” Davis says.
The Fifth Dimension fell into the pop tradition of singers performing the works of songwriters, and their writers were some of the best, including names such as Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro and Neil Sedaka. Their producer, Bones Howe, and vocal arranger, Bob Alcivar, also contributed greatly to the sound of the group, but the five singers vocal strengths and, yes, versatility made all that magical.
“Ron Townsend, he was the heavyset fellow with the beard that everybody used to remember, Ron used to love to sing opera,” McCoo says. “As a matter of fact, he did Pagliacci in our live shows from time to time. Billy came from St. Louis and he sang a lot of R&B and gospel and blues, so Billy always got a chance to show off his wonderful sounds, like when he’d sing all the ad-libs on ‘Let The Sunshine In’ and “Aquarius.’
“Florence and I both came from more of a pop background,” she says. “Florence was pop with a wonderful R&B influence, and I always loved torch songs. And Lamonte was our comedian. Everybody had their own gifts.”
By the mid-’70s, after more Top 10 hits including “One Less Bell To Answer” and “(Last Night) I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All,” McCoo and Davis decided to leave the group to pursue solo careers, their original goal before coming together as the Fifth Dimension.
“The group was supposed to be a hobby,” McCoo says.
“It’s a hobby, but the hobby turned into a profession,” Davis says.
“And like Billy said, before you knew it we had a hit record, so then it was like, well, we’re not going to break up the group now,” McCoo says.
But after a decade, the music scene started to change, the old longing returned, and this time they followed it.
“We said it would always be sad if you look back on your life and say, ‘Wow, you know, I always wanted to try this; wow, I wish I had gone on and had the courage to step out and try that,’ you know?” McCoo says. “So we actually decided to do it.”
As a duo they quickly scored a No. 1 hit in 1976, “You Don’t Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show),” which also won a Grammy, and in 1977 they became the first African-American couple to lead a network TV series when CBS ran “The Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. Show” as a summer replacement series.
She went onto act, host the TV series “Solid Gold,” and release more music. Davis also acted and sang, often working in the gospel music genre he’d known as a young guy coming up in St. Louis.
As for how their marriage has endured 50 years when few marriages reach that landmark, and particularly those of entertainment industry couples, McCoo and Davis give a lot of the credit to their strong faith. They found their way to it nearly 40 years ago through a producer and songwriter friend named Frank Wilson who put together a regular program at a club on the Sunset Strip called Jesus At The Roxy, a place for performers to worship and sing and seek answers to the biggest of questions.
“We were already married, but we really give Jesus Christ the glory and we thank him because we feel like he truly helped to strengthen our relationship,” McCoo says.
“And our marriage,” Davis says.
They’ve got a new album almost ready for release — covers of songs by a very famous group, they hint — and plan to keep on singing songs old and new.
“There’s such a joy, you know, and of course you’re not going to run away from something like that,” McCoo says. “I mean, that’s a crowd-pleaser for sure.”
