Sea Breeze Cocktail Recipe
The Sea Breeze is an icon of 1980s drinking, a light and refreshing cocktail that pairs perfectly with sunny days at the beach. Featuring vodka, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice, it’s often grouped with similar drinks of the era, like the Cape Codder (vodka and cranberry) and the Bay Breeze (vodka, cranberry and pineapple). That makes sense, as the cocktails do contain a common thread among their ingredients. But the Sea Breeze enjoys a history all its own.
Despite its significant ’80s street cred, the Sea Breeze likely originated decades earlier, although in a different form than it’s known today. Harry Craddock’s famed 1930 tome, “The Savoy Cocktail Book,” includes a recipe for the Sea Breeze Cooler, which calls for equal parts dry gin and apricot brandy, plus half a lemon and two dashes of grenadine. It’s served over ice, topped with club soda and garnished with mint. Though a much different cocktail than today’s version, many believe this to be the basis for the modern Sea Breeze. And the recipe changeup may be due to some clever marketing by a cranberry consortium.
By the 1960s, Ocean Spray—originally founded as a growers’ collective in 1930—began publishing recipe booklets to promote using the tart little berries in more foods and drinks. Naturally, this push included cocktails. One particular cocktail was dubbed the Sea Breeze and featured cranberry juice, which may be the first instance of the popular drink containing cranberry.
Today, the Savoy’s Sea Breeze Cooler is largely under-the-radar, supplanted by the modern vodka-spiked version. The cocktail is thirst-quenching, delicious and simple to make, so it’s easy to see why it caught on. Bottled cranberry juice continues to be the popular choice, as fresh juice is typically too tart to work by itself. But freshly squeezed grapefruit is always a good idea. Its rich citrus notes contribute to the cocktail’s restorative sensibilities and quaffability.
The Sea Breeze is ready to help, whether you’re on a beach or just trying to conjure beach vibes with your drinking habits. Built in the same glass you drink it in, there’s no easier way to bring the sunny weather your way.
Sea Breeze Cocktail
Everyone needs to have this Sea Breeze Cocktail recipe in their collection. It’s a blend of juices and vodka, and it’s delicious!
The notion of the Sea Breeze Cocktail was born in the 1920’s, though gin and grenadine were in the original Sea Breeze. It evolved over the years and eventually became a popular drink in the 70’s made with vodka and fruit juices.
A Bay Breeze, or a Hawaiian Sea Breeze, is similar to a Sea Breeze except for the substitution of pineapple juice for grapefruit juice. The Sea Breeze is also closely related to the Cape Codder (which lacks the grapefruit juice) and the Salty Dog (which lacks the cranberry juice and is made with a salted rim).
How to make a Sea Breeze Cocktail:
It’s an easy drink to make. And it’s nothing fancy. Fill an 8-ounce glass halfway with ice cubes. Add 4-ounces of grapefruit juice, 2-ounces of cranberry juice and 1 1/2-ounces of vodka. Give it a stir, garnish with a lime, and serve.
Alternately, you can use a cocktail shaker- place the ice and other ingredients in the shaker. Shake, then strain into a glass and serve.
How to choose good limes:
Look for green limes that smell limey. Give them a squeeze. Good limes will have some give to them. Hard limes are either not ripe yet or old. Feel their weight. Heavy-feeling limes for their size will be juicier.
Helpful conversions if you don’t have a measuring cup with ounces:
4-ounces is the same as 1/2 cup, so you’ll need 1/2 cup grapefruit juice. 2-ounces is the same as 1/4 cup, so you’ll need 1/4 cup cranberry juice. 1 1/2-ounces is the same as 3 tablespoons, so you’ll need 3 tablespoons of vodka. Double or triple the recipe to make more or share with friends.

Sea Breeze (cocktail)
Cocktail of vodka with cranberry and grapefruit juice
A Sea Breeze is a cocktail containing vodka with cranberry juice and grapefruit juice.[1] The cocktail is usually consumed during summer months. The drink may be shaken in order to create a foamy surface.[1] It is considered an IBA Official Cocktail.[1]
The drink follows the classic cocktail principle of balancing strong (alcohol) with weak (fruit juice) and sweet and sour.[1][2]
A Bay Breeze, or a Hawaiian Sea Breeze, is similar to a Sea Breeze except for the substitution of pineapple juice for grapefruit juice.[2][3] It is also closely related to the Cape Codder (which lacks the grapefruit juice) and the Salty Dog (which lacks the cranberry juice and is made with a salted rim).[4]
History [ edit ]
The cocktail was born in the late 1920s, but the recipe was different from the one used today, as gin and grenadine were used in the original Sea Breeze.[5] This was near the end of the Prohibition era. In the 1930s, a Sea Breeze had gin, apricot brandy, grenadine, and lemon juice.[6] Later, a Sea Breeze recipe would contain vodka, dry vermouth, Galliano, and blue Curaçao.[6]
The cranberry grower’s cooperative in the 1930s evolved into Ocean Spray which marketed cranberry juice in the 1950s.[4] Cranberry juice was used as a mixer with alcohol, first with gin and later with vodka.[4] The Harpoon, later called the Cape Codder, was born, and its descendants such as the Greyhound, the Salty Dog, the Bay Breeze, and the Sea Breeze were later created.[4] Starting in the 1960s, the breeze drinks were sporadically in the top ten most popular mixed drinks.[4]
According to some, the Sea Breeze, along with the Cape Codder and Bay Breeze, did not become very popular until the 1970s.[7] This was because in 1959, the U.S. Department of Health stated that cranberry crops were tainted with toxic herbicides, collapsing the cranberry industry.[7]

Simple Guide to Cocktail Glassware
When there is no specific glass suggested for a cocktail, it’s up to you to chose a glass.
Either you just go ahead and serve using any glass available to you following these simple rules
A. Go for Tall or Collins Glasses, Highball Glasses or even Hurricane Glasses for cocktails with loads of non-alcoholic mixes, and those that require crushed or cubed ices,
B. But if your cocktail is aromatic and liqueur based, and has a complex character that must reach the nose use a wide mouthed Cocktail Glass.
C. Red Wine Glasses for cocktails that have a Red Wine as the base spirit. Red Wine Glasses have a wider mouth and a long stem, so that the wine can be swirled an aerated to release the aroma while the long stem keeps the fingers away and avoid quick warming of the wine.
D. White Wine Glasses for cocktails with a White Wine base, since White Wines must not be aerated as much as a Red Wines, since they oxidise fast when in contact with air, White Wine glassware, in contrast to the wide mouthed bowl of a Red Wine Glassware, is narrow with a narrow mouth. A White Wine has much lighter and delicate notes and the narrow mouth and less surface area in contact with air helps retain the aroma.
E. If your cocktail is based on a Sparkling Wine like Champagne then a Flute Glass is more suitable since a Sparkling Wine is a White Wine with a secondary fermentation that produces the bubbles, and the narrow mouth flute prevents the bubbles from escaping.
F. If it’s winter and you are in the mood for some hot cocktails like the Irish Coffee or Hot Toddy, go for the Irish Coffee Glass, it has a heat resistant glass and a handle.
G. Martini Glasses for Martinis or “Tinis” in general, but since these glasses have fallen off of favour these days, a Cocktail Glass will be good too.
H. IF you are serving Margaritas, don’t look for Margarita Glass if you don’t have one at home, Double Old Fashioned Glass or other glasses are more common these days, for serving Margaritas.
I. If you are the adventurous one, and are serving shots or shooters, of course the Shot Glass is your choice of glass,
J. Finally, if you are going all out and serving depth charges and car bomb shots, all you need is a Double Old Fashioned Glass or a Beer Mug for the beer and a shot glass to drop the bomb in.
