Parkwood Hybrid PWH4 acoustic-electric guitar
We know, we know. You want an acoustic-electric that plays like an electric but gives you those full-bodied ringing tones of an electric. Guess what? You’re in luck.
The new Hybrid PWH4 from Parkwood Guitars is that one-of-a-kind instrument, one which delivers on its promises. Here is an acoustic-electric that offers fast, easy playability and yet it sings like a shop full of canaries. The body is constructed of chambered mahogany with a beautiful 4-A flamed Australian blackwood top. The slim, solidbody-feeling neck is mahogany, with a bound rosewood fretboard and a 22-fret scale length of 24 3/4 inches.
The pickup configuration consists of a Duncan SM3B Mini-Humbucker in the bridge position, a Duncan SM1N Mini-Humbucker in the neck, and a Fishman Powerbridge piezo pickup — very cool. The controls are as follows: a master volume and tone for the Duncans, a three-way selector for the Duncans, a concentric volume/tone pot for the Fishman Powerbridge, and a three-way mini-toggle pickup selector for the Duncans and the Fishman.
The Parkwood Hyrid PWH4 is a finely crafted, versatile instrument. And here’s the best part: it retails for only $999.99 U.S. Did somebody say “deal”?
Anybody Try These Parkwood Hybrids?
I was really interested in getting the PW-H4 with the Koa top, but I didn’t decide to pull the trigger until Guitar Center was sold out. In the end, I bought one of the last PW-H2’s (the black top one).
During this time, I called up the factory to see what was up. Parkwood is a small design and sales company in California that has a manufacturing plant overseas. They sell mostly acoustic guitars to Guitar Center. On at least the Parkwood hydrid, Guitar Center has an exclusive contract. Parkwood cannot sell that guitar to any other US retail outlet. And Guitar Center has never re-ordered.
An anonymous Guitar Center employee cynically told me that he believes that Guitar Center uses these contracts with places like Parkwood to keep the better known brands in order. He believed that Guitar Center would intentionally put the Parkwood hybrid at $1000 next to a Taylor hybrid costing twice that amount until Taylor would give Guitar Center the more favorable terms they wanted.
I have no idea if this is true or not.
But, interestingly, you can still buy a Parkwood hybrid overseas. Just not in the US.
I’m happy to have mine, especially at the price I got (less than half the original price), although I’m having some problems with the pots that I haven’t been able to get resolved. The tone pot is kind of an all or nothing affair. Same with the balance between the Fishman and the humbuckers, and the acoustic volume pot makes a loud static noise whenever I adjust it. Also, on the humbucker side, the tone pot dramatically changes the volume, so that a tone adjustment also requires a pretty big volume adjustment. In my bedroom practice area, my wife is always getting cheesed because when I roll off the tone, I always blast for a few notes until I get the volume/tone balance right.
Except for those problems, the sound is pretty sweet, especially if you play it light, and the action feels more “expensive” than my Strat. In the end, the hybrid part of the guitar has not been as successful to me. In part it’s probably because the electronics aren’t right, and in part because I don’t really play that much acoustic style guitar. I do like it for jazzy things involving lots of 7th and 9th chords.
One of these days, I’ll take it into a shop and have someone fix the electronics. Until then, I admit to not playing it that much. I was using it for all my home recording, because, for all the problems I have with the pots, it is electronically very quiet. Ridiculously more quiet than my Strat, which was unusable unless I walked about 20 paces away from the computer.
Since then I’ve bought a PRS Mira, and that’s my main guitar now.

Parkwood PWH4 Guitar
This is where electric guitars were always going to go. “Hybrid” has become the buzz word, whether it’s cars or guitars. And the PWH4 is certainly at the head of the pack (although there is no digital component), with its combination of Fishman Power Bridge acoustic pickup and the twin Seymour Duncan SM mini-humbuckers. The routed out chambered mahogany body is fitted with a beautifully figured Australian blackwood top, while the scarf jointed mahogany neck is set into the body and faced with a bound rosewood fingerboard fitted with 22 jumbo frets. Grover machine heads with ebonol half moons finish off the very understated headstock. With all its onboard electronic wizardry, the PWH4 offers some interesting sonic combinations. Using the Power Bridge pickup on its own achieves an acceptable electro-acoustic sound which can be tonally adjusted, although the overall timbre is it seems, always thin and brittle. Introducing the SM1N and the SM3B mini-humbuckers into the mix creates some interesting colour and flavour and the permutations are almost endless. Somewhere in the tonal mix I found a very satisfying combination, but how do you remember which settings and values you are using? The mini-humbuckers on their own produce the sort of sounds that you might expect and there was an interesting depth to the soundscape here, which had much to do with the chambered nature of the instrument. The slim neck is fast and extremely playable and the ‘string-thru’ body helps to give the PWH4 exceptional sustain. With so many positive points, it’s unfortunate that the Parkwood powers-that-be don’t invest in quality “pots”, as the ’buckers’ volume control didn’t dial in ’til 10 o’clock! The verdict? Great guitar but there is that hardware issue. www.cort-guitars.co.uk
