How to Break a Habit: 15 Tips for Success

Share on Pinterest Everyone has habits, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with them. Some are pretty useful — maybe you lay out your clothes for work the night before or automatically turn off the lights when you leave a room. But other habits, such as biting your nails, drinking caffeine too late in the day, or hitting snooze too many times, might not be so beneficial. Breaking unwanted habits can be difficult, especially if you’ve been engaging in them for a long time. But understanding how habits form in the first place can ease the process. The making of a habit There are a few theories around how habits develop. The idea of the 3 Rs is one of the main ones: Reminder. This is a trigger, or cue, that could be a conscious behavior, such as flushing the toilet, or a feeling, such as nervousness.

This is a trigger, or cue, that could be a conscious behavior, such as flushing the toilet, or a feeling, such as nervousness. Routine. This is the behavior associated with the trigger. Flushing the toilet cues you to wash your hands, while feeling nervous triggers biting your nails. Doing something over and over can make the behavior routine.

This is the behavior associated with the trigger. Flushing the toilet cues you to wash your hands, while feeling nervous triggers biting your nails. Doing something over and over can make the behavior routine. Reward. The reward associated with a behavior also helps make a habit stick. If you do something that causes enjoyment or relieves distress, the pleasurable release of dopamine in your brain can make you want to do it again. With the idea of the 3 Rs in mind, here are 15 tips to help you break that old, stubborn habit.

Identify your triggers Remember, triggers are the first step in developing a habit. Identifying the triggers behind your habitual behaviors is the first step in moving past them. Spend a few days tracking your habit to see whether it follows any patterns. Note things like: Where does the habitual behavior happen?

What time of day?

How do you feel when it happens?

Are other people involved?

Does it happen right after something else? Let’s say you want to stop staying up past midnight. After a few days of tracking your behavior, you realize you tend to stay up later if you start watching TV or chatting with friends after dinner. But you go to bed earlier if you read or take a walk. You decide to stop watching TV and turn off your phone by 9 p.m. on weeknights. Removing the trigger — watching TV or talking to friends — makes it harder to carry out the routine of staying up too late.

Focus on why you want to change Why do you want to break or change a certain habit? Research from 2012 suggests it may be easier to change your behavior when the change you want to make is valuable or beneficial to you. Take a few minutes to consider why you want to break the habit and any benefits you see resulting from the change. Listing these reasons may help you think of a few that hadn’t occurred to you yet. For added motivation, write your reasons down on a piece of paper and keep it on your fridge, bathroom mirror, or another place where you’ll see it regularly. Seeing the list can keep the change you’re trying to make fresh in your mind. If you do happen to fall back into the habit, your list reminds you why you want to keep trying.

Enlist a friend’s support If you and a friend or partner both want to break an unwanted habit, try to do it together. Say you both want to stop smoking. Dealing with cravings on your own can be tough. Quitting along with a friend won’t make the cravings go away. But they might be easier to deal with when facing them with someone else. Make it a point to cheer each other’s successes and encourage each other through setbacks. A friend can still offer support even if they don’t have any habits they want to change. Consider telling a trusted friend about the habit you’re trying to break. They can encourage you in times of doubt and gently remind you of your goal if they notice you slipping back into old habits.

Practice mindfulness Mindfulness can help you develop awareness around your thoughts, feelings, and actions. This practice involves simply observing impulses that relate to your habit without judging them or reacting to them. As you become more aware of these routine behaviors and the triggers that lead to them, you may find it easier to consider other options, such as avoiding reminder cues or not acting on the urges. Practicing mindfulness can also help you notice ways your habit affects your daily life. As you start to recognize these effects, you may feel more driven to work on changing the habit.

Replace the habit with a different one You might have an easier time breaking a habit if you replace the unwanted behavior with a new behavior, instead of simply trying to stop the unwanted behavior. Say you want to stop reaching for candy when you’re hungry at work. If you simply try to avoid the candy dish, you might fall back into the habit when you can’t resist hunger. But bringing in a Tupperware of dried fruit and nuts to keep at your desk gives you another snack option. As you repeat the new behavior, the impulse to follow the new routine develops. Eventually, after you see rewards from the new habit — more energy and less of a sugar crash — the urge to keep doing this behavior might outweigh the desire to pursue the old habit. Replacing harmful habits, such as substance misuse, with more positive ones can have a lot of benefit. But it’s important to remember “good” habits, such as exercise, can still become excessive. Even “healthy” eating can have negative effects when taken to extremes.

Leave yourself reminders Using stickers, sticky notes, or other visual reminders wherever the habit behavior happens can help you rethink the action when something triggers you. Here are a few ideas: Want to break the habit of drinking soda with every meal? Try leaving small stickers on your refrigerator that you’ll see when you go to reach for a can.

Trying to remember to turn off lights when you leave a room? Leave a note for yourself on the light switch or door.

Want to start keeping your keys in a designated place so you stop losing them frequently? Leave a dish for your keys in the first place you’ll see it when you return home. You can also use a smartphone for reminders. Set your alarm and add a motivating note to yourself, such as “Time to turn off the TV! :)” or “After-dinner walk — remember how good it feels!”

Prepare for slipups Breaking a habit can be challenging, though you might find some habits easier to shake than others. “It’s very easy to slip back into old patterns, particularly when the new ones aren’t solidified yet,” said Erika Myers, LPC. “Change is hard. Remember, it took a while to build up those habits, so you won’t lose them in a day.” Try to mentally prepare for slipups so you won’t feel guilty or discouraged if you do. Maybe you commit to jotting down three bullet points about how you felt as you were doing the habit, or do a quick breathing exercise. Try to learn from your slipups. Be honest with yourself about what led to the setback, and consider whether changing your approach might help you stay more on track.

Let go of the all-or-nothing mindset Accepting you’ll probably slip up a few times when trying to break a habit and coming up with a plan is one thing. Preventing feelings of frustration and failure when you do slip up is another story. If you fall back into an old habit, you might wonder, “Can I really do this?” You might begin to doubt yourself and feel inclined to give up. Myers recommends looking at your successes instead. Maybe you’re trying to quit smoking and you succeed for 3 days in a row. On the fourth day, you have a cigarette and spend the rest of the night feeling like a failure. “Having a cigarette after going a few days without smoking doesn’t take away those past days,” said Myers. Remember, you can make a different choice tomorrow. “You’re looking for movement in a particular direction rather than perfection,” Myers added. “Instead of focusing on your end goal, consider this: Anything you do that’s more of what you want is good.”

Start small Trying to kick multiple habits in the same go? The image of a new, improved self can be a powerful motivator, especially when you first decide to change unwanted habits. This can sometimes work. If the habits go together, you might find it easier to address them at the same time. For example, if you want to stop smoking and drinking, and you always do those two things together, quitting both at once may make the most sense. But experts generally recommend starting small. Aim to change one habit at a time. Addressing habits in steps can also help, even if these steps seem too small or easily manageable in the beginning. Thinking back to the soda-with-every-meal example, you could start by not drinking soda with dinner for a week. Then, bump it up to not having it with dinner or lunch the next week.

Change your environment Your surroundings can sometimes have a big impact on your habits. Maybe you’re trying to break the habit of always ordering takeout because it’s costing you too much money. But every time you go into the kitchen, you see the to-go menus hanging on your fridge. You could try replacing the menu with printouts of easy recipes you know you’ll enjoy. Other examples include: leaving a journal, book, or hobby items (sketchbooks, crafts, or games) on your coffee table to encourage you to pick them up instead of scrolling through social media

spending 10 or 15 minutes tidying up your house each evening to encourage you to keep things clutter-free

changing up your morning walk to work so you don’t pass the cafe with the tempting, overpriced latte Keep in mind that the people you surround yourself with are also part of your environment. Consider taking a break from spending time with those who contribute to your habit or don’t support your process of breaking one.

Visualize yourself breaking the habit Breaking habits doesn’t have to be an entirely hands-on, physical process. You can practice new replacement habits mentally, too. Imagine yourself in a triggering environment or situation, such as the morning before your performance review. How would you typically react? You might see yourself anxiously biting your nails or drumming your pen against your desk. How could you react instead? Visualize yourself practicing deep breathing, walking to get a drink of water, sorting through old notes or files, or tidying desk drawers — anything that keeps your hands busy and helps calm you. Practicing a different response in your mind can help it become more familiar when you face the situation in reality.

Practice self-care Many people find it easier to create positive changes in life when they begin from a place of wellness. If you’re already dealing with other challenges, such as work stress, relationship troubles, or health problems, trying to break a habit can lead to more distress than the actual habit. When breaking a habit, it’s especially important to prioritize your own wellness. This not only boosts your chances of success, but it also helps you keep functioning in the face of challenges. Try these self-care tips: Make time for restful sleep.

Eat regular, nutritious meals.

See your healthcare provider for any long-term concerns.

Aim to be physically active most days.

Take at least a little time each day for hobbies, relaxation, or other things that improve your mood.

Motivate yourself with rewards for success Remember, breaking a habit can be incredibly difficult. Make sure to acknowledge how far you’ve come, and try to give yourself rewards along the way. Even small motivators, like telling yourself what a great job you’re doing, can boost your confidence and increase your drive to keep trying. When you focus on the progress you’ve made, you’re less likely to become discouraged or engage in negative self-talk, both of which can do a number on your motivation. “Celebrate your wins,” Erika recommended. “Maybe you aren’t ready to run a marathon, but if running a mile this week is easier than it was last week, that’s success.”

Give it time There’s a common myth that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. But where does that figure come from? It’s likely from a study involving people who had plastic surgery. Most of them adjusted to their changed appearance within 3 weeks. That’s pretty different from actively working to break and ingrained habit. Realistically, experts believe it takes about 10 weeks (2 to 3 months) or more to break an unwanted happen. Of course, some habits may take more or less time to break. The amount of time it takes to break a habit depends on several things, according to Myers. These include: how long you’ve had the habit

the emotional, physical, or social needs the habit fulfills

whether you have support or help breaking the habit

the physical or emotional reward the habit provides If a few weeks have passed, and you feel you haven’t made much progress, it can help to revisit your approach. But you might also consider seeking help from a mental health professional, especially for habits that are more deeply ingrained in your behavior or cause you a lot of distress

Stronghold of bad habit | The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Text: Romans 7:14-25

The word “habit” is derived from the Latin word “habitus,” which means how you are. It actually means your state or condition. Weber dictionary defines habit as an established pattern of behaviour. It is this habit that shapes or forms our character. A bad habit is a besetting Sin. It is a particular sin that keep harassing or that continues to trouble a man. Paul said in Romans 7:14-25, anytime he desired to do something good, he discovered he couldn’t do it, but see himself doing the evil or the things he did not desire. Bad habit is like a stronghold that is difficult to break, when fully established. That is why as a child of God, you must be very careful what forms your habit.

I have a classmate, years back in secondary school that used to walk with his shoulders bent almost to his waist level. Initially, it started as a form of play, but eventually, it became a habit that he could not break away from. Years later, when I saw him at over 50 years, he was still walking that way. My children asked me if he was deformed, and could not believe it when I told them that it all started as a joke, but today it has made him to become deformed.

Luke 22:39 talks about the good habit of Jesus Christ. The word ‘custom’ simply means tradition or what we continue to do. Like we said earlier, habits are things we learn to do through repetition and eventually do either unconsciously or with very little effort. First, we form habits and then they form us. We are what we repeatedly do. Jesus developed the habit or custom of going to the mountain to pray. You will find throughout the scripture that all of the great men and women of God had similar habit. They all knew the crucial importance of spending time with God.

One of the ways we can deal with bad habits is to replace them with new ones. It is amazing how powerful our subconscious mind is. Every time we do something, our sub-conscious mind programmes it into our brain. The more you do it, the more entrenched the programme becomes. So, to overcome bad habit, you need to reprogramme your mind. Repetition is the key to forming habits, either good or bad. So, for you to overcome old bad habits, you need to form new ones and continually repeat them until they overshadow the bad habits. The Bible tells us that darkness is swallowed up in light. (John 1:5). Good has more power than bad. The devil always wants us to form bad habits, but God’s desire for us is to have good habits. So, we need discipline to continue to repeat the new good habits learnt to replace the bad ones. Getting rid of bad involves Learning, re-learning and unlearning.

Breaking the stronghold of bad habits takes a strong commitment, an investment of time, a lot of hard work and a willingness to be uncomfortable, while you are in transit from bad habit to good habit. It is breaking of a stronghold. This stronghold of bad habit is called addiction. Most addictions come as a result of what we listen to, what we read or watch, people we associate with or the environment we found ourselves in. For some, it could be a family trait that is transferred through the bloodline. The destiny of many people today has been truncated or destroyed because of bad habits they cannot let go. For example, Samson had a habit of always going after strange women, and it was that habit that led him to his downfall and eventually death. Judges 16:1: The prophecy of Samson’s birth came in Judges 13:2-5. He was instructed not to touch unclean things and to avoid strong drinks. When Samson grew up, he developed a bad habit of always doing the opposite of his parents’ instructions. He developed over time the habit of drinking and running after strange women. Eventually, he met Delilah, Judges 6:4-30, who brought about his downfall.

Let Go

Dear God,

It’s difficult to fully let go of our anxiety, or the world around us when we can’t see evidence of all that you’re doing – when we can’t understand or see your purpose or plan. Today, we pause and remind ourselves of our dependency on you, for we know in our hearts that our circumstances and futures are touched by your hands.

Isaiah 55:8 reminds us that our thoughts are not your thoughts – and that our ways are not your ways. When we are struggling to see clearly and make decisions, we are not alone and that inner peace is something only you can supply.

So today Lord, we purposefully, even urgently, say again that we choose to believe in you. We know that it’s often in the most challenging times that you are most at work. Thank you for being the one who gives us the strength to help each other and to see distinctly the choices we face. As we scan our personal horizons, we know that we also must look to you alone for the power and possibility that is our future.

We ask for your guidance so that we might walk fully in your path – a path that you have blessed. We also ask for your face to shine on us – individually, and as a team of colleagues and partners.

Please bring to fulfillment all that you have given us to do in the weeks ahead. Give us a heart of wisdom to hear your voice; and then make our footsteps firm. Please make us strong through your favor and grace.

Slow Me Down

Slow me down, Lord!

Ease the pounding of my heart

By the quieting of my mind.

Steady my harried pace

With a vision of the eternal reach of time.

Give me,

Amidst the confusions of my day,

The calmness of the everlasting hills.

Break the tensions of my nerves

With the soothing music

Of the singing streams

That live in my memory.

Help me to know

The magical power of sleep,

Teach me the art

Of taking minute vacations

Of slowing down

To look at a flower;

To chat with an old friend

Or make a new one;

To pet a dog;

To watch a spider build a web;

To smile at a child;

Or to read a few lines from a good book.

Remind me each day

That the race is not always won by the swift;

That there is more to life

Than increasing its speed.

Let me look upward

Into the branches of the towering oak

And know that it grew great and strong

Because it grew slowly and well.

Slow me down, Lord,

And inspire me to send my roots deep

Into the soil of life’s enduring values

That I may grow toward the stars

Of our greater destiny.

Lightening the Load

The first thing we have to do

is to notice

that we’ve loaded down this camel

with so much baggage

we’ll never get through the desert alive.

Something has to go.

Then we can begin to dump

the thousand things

we’ve brought along

until even the camel has to go

and we’re walking barefoot

on the desert sand.

There’s no telling what will happen then.

But I’ve heard that someone,

walking in this way,

has seen a burning bush.

Your Peace

God, who is more than we can ever comprehend,

help us to seek you,

and you alone.

Help us to stand before all that we could do

and seek what you would do,

and do that.

Lift from us our need to achieve all that we can be

and instead,

surrender to what you can be in us.

Give us ways to refrain from the busyness

that will put us on edge and off center,

give us today your peace.

I Want To Be Available

Holy and perfect God,

you know I want to be available.

Help that desire sink deeply enough into my being

for me to actually change

and to say “no” to a least one worthy, but not urgent, task today.

Give me the ability to be open to the life I am leading;

not the one I am planning to lead.

Push My Buttons Prayer

Lord, it’s likely that sometime today

someone will push my buttons

challenge my good will

misread my intentions

tick me off

try my patience

rattle my cage

judge me in haste

test my kindness

or do all of the above…

Give me the grace I’ll need at such times

to respond with patience

to trust and accept

to listen carefully

to reach out in peace

to be fair and just

to anctipate goodness

in all my words and deeds…

I know this is a lot to ask, Lord,

but I need your help

to do for others

as I’d have them do for me…

Amen.

A Prayer for Inner Peace

Lord, please put Your peace in my heart.

I’m worried and anxious.

My mind races and obsesses.

I can’t help thinking about my problems.

And the more I think about them,

the more depressed I become.

I feel like I’m sinking down in quicksand

and can’t get out.

Calm me, Lord.

Slow me down, put Your peace in my heart.

No matter what problem I have, Lord,

You are bigger,

You are more powerful than it is.

So I bring my problem to You.

I know what I want.

I know my will.

I do not know Yours.

I do not know how You will use this problem for my salvation.

I do not know what good You will workout from this evil.

But I trust You.

I trust Your goodness and Your wisdom.

So I place myself in Your hands.

Please fill my heart with peace.

Prayer for Peace and Calm

Dear Lord and Father of humankind,

Forgive our foolish ways;

Reclothe us in our rightful mind,

In purer lives Thy service find,

In deeper reverence, praise.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,

Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of Thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire

Thy coolness and Thy balm;

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,

O still, small voice of calm.

Within Our Reach: Joy

There is nothing I can give you which you have not;

But there is much, very much, that while I cannot give,

You can take.

No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today.

Take heaven!

No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present instant.

Take peace!

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our

Reach is joy.

Take joy!

There is a radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see,

And to see we have only to look.

I beseech you to look!

Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by the covering,

Cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard.

Remove the covering and you will find beneath it a living splendor,

Woven of love, by wisdom, with power.

Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel’s hand

That brings it to you.

Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or a duty

Believe me, that angel’s hand is there, the gift is there,

And the wonder of an overshadowing presence.

Our joys, too, be not content with them as joys.

They, too, conceal diviner gifts.

Life is so full of meaning and purpose,

So full of beauty beneath its covering-

That you will find earth but cloaks your heaven.

And so, at this time, I greet you.

Not quite as the world sends greetings,

But with profound esteem

And with the prayer that for you, now and forever,

The day breaks, and all the shadows flee away.

5 Steps to Develop a Habit of Prayer

Sharing is caring!

How regularly do you pray? Be honest here. Has prayer become as habitual for you as brushing your teeth?

Or, do you have the best intentions to pray regularly, but sometimes just forget? Or, sometimes get busy and prayer falls to the side? Or, do you intend to pray at bedtime and fall asleep as you’re starting to pray?

If you struggle to pray consistently (don’t we all?), then try these 5 simple steps today to start developing a prayer habit that can change your life.

How do you develop a habit of prayer?

Habits are notoriously hard to form and even harder to change once set. Making prayer a habitual part of your day is a difficult pattern to establish, especially if it means changing other habits. Yet, what should be more essential in your day than prayer?

“Prayer should be a habitual attitude, not an occasional act.” ~Harry Emerson Fosdick, in The Meaning of Prayer

For prayer to be effective in your life, it must be regular and habitual. Something you do daily without even thinking about it. Prayer should be fully ingrained into the fabric of your life.

How many prayer requests must one have to pray so continually? Prayer isn’t only about asking for things. In fact, prayer should first and foremost be about developing a relationship with God. Share your life, discuss your dreams, review your decisions, open your heart to guidance and direction, get to know God, and explore who God is.

Brother Lawrence gives this definition of prayer, “That we should establish ourselves in a sense of God’s presence, by continually conversing with him.”

So, how do you develop a habit of prayer, especially when life gets busy and prayer doesn’t seem the top priority?

5 Steps to Develop a Habit of Prayer

1) Start the conversation.

Just get started. Research shows that the people who are most successful at forming habits are the ones who get started and stick to it the most at the start.

So, open the conversation with God. Say “hello” and share what’s on your heart.

2) Set aside specific times for daily prayer.

Schedule time with God. Be deliberate about making time for prayer in your day.

If you’re as calendar-driven as I am, create an appointment with yourself. Write it in your calendar, so you’ll reserve the time and have a reminder.

No matter how busy your life might be, you’ll always make time for your top priorities. So, make prayer a priority.

Check out these 10 ways to find time for prayer in your day for more ideas.

3) Make a plan for your prayer time.

Especially as you’re getting started, make a plan for your prayer time. Most of us aren’t great at sitting in the silence, particularly without guidance and practice.

So, use a daily prayer guide or devotional to guide your prayers. There are many methods and templates for prayer, but the key is to have a plan before you start so you can stay focused.

Need a daily prayer guide to get started? I have several options available for you in the store. Choose the one that fits best for your journey with prayer.

4) Set a specific duration for each phase of your habit-forming journey.

While it often takes far more than 21 days to form a habit, it can be helpful to give yourself manageable time constraints.

It’s far easier to stick to a new daily routine for 21 days than to enter a change like this with an open-ended duration. With a set duration, you have a deadline and a goal to reach.

Once you reach that goal, you can set another one. Maybe it takes you three or four (or more) rounds of 21-day prayer sprints to form a lasting prayer habit, but setting interim goals will help you recognize progress along the way.

5) Incorporate prayer throughout your day.

As you become more consistent about your daily prayer time, begin to add prayer into other times of your day.

Continue the conversation throughout your day, until prayer becomes the thread running throughout your day, connecting all the pieces of your life.

Consider using prayer prompts as reminders to pray. Be purposeful to include God in your decision-making, concerns, stresses, and joys.

Start forming your prayer habit today!

Will you get started today? Open your calendar right now and make an appointment with God.

Schedule a daily prayer appointment on your calendar for the next few weeks.

Then, choose a prayer plan (use one available here, a daily Bible reading plan, or any other devotional) to help you get started.

Set a duration for this first prayer journey and hold yourself accountable to complete it.

Give yourself grace if you miss a day, but then get back on track and keep going.

Prayer will be the best habit you ever form!

Prayer for Bad Habits (To Stop Addiction)

“Hear my prayer, O Lord,Give ear to my supplications! Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness!” – Psalm 143:1

Jesus Calls

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the holy spirit who is in you, whom you have from god, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify god in your body and in your spirit, which are god’s.- I Corinthians 6:19, 20

Most loving Father! You know all my weakness and shortcomings. I feel so unworthy to stand before You. I choose to believe Your word which says that You are the lover of all sinners. I draw near to Your throne of grace begging for Your mercy and help.O Lord! The Scripture says that we ought to present our bodies holy and acceptable to You! Master! I am of the flesh and on my own strength I just cannot over come this sinful habit. But I long to lead a clean and pleasing life before You, Lord. I am so helpless and find it very difficult to resist the temptations that come across my way! I look up to You for help, Master! Please cleanse me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit who alone can strengthen me to over come this habit. Let Your spirit guide me and preserve me from stumbling back. Please Lord take full control of my thoughts and grant me Your special grace! O God! Let my eyes be always upon You for without You I can do nothing. You have all the authority in heaven and on earth. I ask You to protect my mind and body and set me absolutely free from this unwanted deed. I choose to submit myself only to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.Forgive me for all that I have done against You and cover me with Your precious blood. Thank You forgiving me and forgetting my bad past Lord! I am now Your child Master and I acknowledge satan has no power over me. Be with me and lead me in the everlasting way. In the name of Jesus, I pray.Amen.

10 Good Prayers For Breaking Bad Habits

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Our bodies yearn to sin because it is attracted to the desires of this earth. Feeling hungry or thirsty, lusting after a member of the opposite sex, being attracted to shiny and attractive things are all symptoms of being a human being on earth.

If it were up to our human bodies, we would be eating ice cream every day and leading lives of sordid and uncontrollable behavior. However, the discipline that we give ourselves is what sustains our lives and bodies so we can live a little longer than we should if we gave in to every desire of the body.

When you are driving on a non-busy road the instinct sometimes is to drive as fast as you possibly can and do whatever you want on the road but your brain starts prompting you to consider unforeseen circumstances and slow down.

Consider your alone time to be your non-busy road. The things you feed your body are the things it eventually gives you back.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

The free will God has given us means that we get to choose which paths our lives’ journey should take. The good news though is that he says that no matter what pit, bad habits, trouble that we may fall into as a result of the paths we take, he has promised that there will always be a way out and that no challenge or problem will be stronger than us.

So the choice still remains whether we want to take God’s way out or continue to please our bodies. As Christians, we have been given strength by the power of Christ to resist and overcome any temptation that may be thrown our way.

Even though our bodies may try to lead us to destruction through lustful behavior, our spirits have been given the strength to take back control. If you fall into a bad habit pray for strength in your spirit to help your body conform to the way of the spirit to prevent destruction.

Prayer for Deliverance From Habits

Today we will be dealing with a series of prayer for Deliverance from habits. What is an Habit? It is a behavior, attitude or action that an individual can not do without. And when we talk about deliverance from bad habit, it means that the habit is not a good one.

There are so many people who have been caught in the web of bad habits, some people can not tell a single truth without mincing words. To others, it could be stealing, to some, it could be vulgar words, some are in the habit of fornicating and so many more.

While deliverance is the process of freeing someone or something from the snare of another thing that seem more powerful. There are some bad habits that we have been addicted to over time and freeing ourselves from them has become the most difficult thing to do. Yes, we know that it is bad but we can just help it. At times, we beg God for strength not to do those things again as they contravene our spiritual growth and stability, however, it always seemed like God only heed that prayer for a little while. Before we know it again, we have found ourselves in that habit.

Drawing reference from the scripture, Judas Iscariot, one of the distinct disciples of Jesus had the habit of covetousness. Little wonder he could not help but give Jesus away for just thirty pieces of silver. King David had the lust of the flesh and that is why he could not control himself when he saw the naked wife of his servant Uriah. In most cases, the bad habit that we fail to deliver ourselves from will most times, hinder us from attaining our full potentials which God has in stock for our lives.

So much that it cost Apostle Paul to cry to God to help him conquer the habit that is ruining his spiritual being. He told God that he often find himself doing the things which he doesn’t want to do but finds it very difficult to do things that he wants to do.

Some people’s habit could be procrastination and many times, it limit the potential increase of that person. Whatever, habit is it that you have in your life and you know well that it is reducing your productivity both physically and spiritually, you should say the following prayers for deliverance.

I no longer bow to your temptations again in the name of Jesus. For it has been written that he that the Son has set free is free indeed. I have been delivered by Christ Jesus, I bid a farewell to you in the name of Jesus.

I come against every habit of Lustful seduction, I decree that in the name of Jesus, you are destroyed. From now, my mind is being controlled by the power of God, my spirit being has been strengthened by the auction of heaven, nerve again will return to you in the name of Jesus.

I destroy every evil infliction of the enemy over my life that has caused me to have a bad habit over the year. I destroy their powers over me by the blood of the Lamb.

I come against every spirit of kleptomaniac, every habit of stealing, I destroy you in the name of Jesus. I come against you by the blood of the lamb and I destroy your territory in my life in the name of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, I want you to take over life and my entire being. Like the flow of waters, I want you to direct my path, I want you to guide me and nurture and give me a spiritual sensitivity that I will not fall victim to the devil anymore in the name of Jesus.

Every evil addiction in my life, I destroy you in the name of Jesus. From now, the word of God is now a lamb unto my feet and a light to my path. I will not fall again in the name of Jesus.

For Christ has died to redeem us from the curse of law, because it has been written that curse is he that is hanged on the tree. I exempt myself from every evil curses that inflict people with bad character and attitude especially against God. I free myself from your hold in the name of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, I pray that you will fly upon me the spirit of the true God. The Bible says if the power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you, it will quicken your mortal body. I pray for the spirit of God Almighty to dwell in my life. The spirit that will quicken my mortal body, the spirit that will ignite me and raise my awareness to the vices of the devil to make me fall into that habit again, I receive that spirit in the name of Jesus.

I pray for every man and woman that needs a change of habit for them to fully maximize the grace of God over their lives, I ask that the spirit of a new being in Christ Jesus will dwell upon them in the name of Jesus.

MARRIAGE AFTER GOD

Dear Lord,

I realize that I have some bad habits. I do things that are not beneficial for me and some things I do never benefit my marriage. Please help me to break these bad habits and exercise self-control to be better. I am so appreciative to have your Holy Spirit transforming me! Thank you! I pray for other wives who have some bad habits that they need to break. Please give them direction and guidance and encouragement during the process of transformation. I pray that our efforts to be intentional about breaking bad habits would bless you, bless us and bless our husbands in Jesus name AMEN!

3 Step Prayer That Will Stop Any Bad Habit.

In 1993, I “accidentally” attended a seminar on thought life. I expected the speaker was going to talk about how we think. Wouldn’t you? I didn’t know “thought life” was “Christian code” for lustful thinking. You know, “Hey man, how’s your thought life?” “Oh dude, don’t ask, I’ve been struggling lately.”

Ever heard that? Ever said it?

I didn’t realize people knew I thought like this. I thought I was the only one with my lust problem. I felt exposed and embarrassed. And yet, he said he had an answer. A prayer that would stop my obsessive habit. Could it be that easy? I didn’t want to hear anyone talk about this. I also didn’t want to be the one guy who got up and walked out. I just acted nonchalant. And listened.

“Our thought life”, he said, “is not something to fight, but something to surrender.”

Like quicksand, the more I struggle and fight with my habits, the more they suck me in. When I surrender my habit to the care of God, I allow Him room to move and act in my life. I allow Him to reorder my thoughts and actions toward a healthy, God-led way of life.

When fighting a habit you want to break, have you ever considered giving in instead of fighting harder?

Here is the Prayer that broke my habit of compulsive lust and addiction.

God, I can’t fight this fight.

God, You can.

God, I give this fight to you.

God, I can’t fight this fight. I have been fighting. I have been trying to stop on my own. Even if I am using scripture, or prayer, or discipline, I realize that I am still in control. All I need to do is look at the wreckage around me. I’m stuck in a habit. I’m isolating from people. I’m losing time. I’m not stopping. I’m losing this fight.

God, You can. The Creator of the Universe loves me and cares for me. The Creator who brought order out of chaos; He can handle my problems, my habits, my addictions, my circumstances. He can do it. I, obviously, cannot. All observable evidence points to this simple fact: There is a God, and I’m not him.

I give this fight to you. I surrender. Not “kind of” surrender. Not “mostly” surrender. Not “God is my co-pilot” surrender. The surrender that says, “My life is out of control, this habit is out of control. I can’t stop.” The surrender that says, “My best thinking got me in this mess. I need help to get out.”

Easy to pray? Yes.

Easy to do? No.

When I sincerely pray that prayer it works. When my thoughts start going in a way that does not line up with God’s plan for me, I pray, “God, I can’t fight this fight, but You can, I give this fight to you.”

I don’t try to battle my thoughts, I face them, acknowledge them, and surrender them to God. And it works! There are lots of reasons why it works, but for now, let’s just stick with, it works.

And if it works for me, I believe it can work for you. It works because it’s not a technique I’m trying to master. It works because I’m acknowledging my misguided thoughts and asking for help. It works because I’m not fighting on my own. I’m surrendering to God, who wants to help me reorder my thoughts to align with His thoughts.

Can you apply this prayer to your life? Of course you can! With food, or alcohol, or even relationships. It will even work with [insert your bad habit here]. When you are faced with the temptation to act out your bad habit, pray this prayer. Lean into God and stop fighting alone. You will see progress, not perfection, but progress. You will, with God’s help, uncover what’s lying underneath the bad habit that makes you turn to that in the first place. But that’s a later article.

Try this prayer and tell me what happens. Reply back and tell me I’m crazy or I’m right. Or, “it’s crazy that I’m right.” I’m looking forward to hearing what you discover with God.

God, I can’t fight this fight.

God, You can.

God, I give this fight to you.
