BASICS

Zones:

Perennial in Zones 9b-11, grown as an annual elsewhere.

Height:

6 to 36 inches tall

Exposure:

Full sun (6-8 hours per day)

Soil:

Rich, loamy, well-draining soil for in-ground plants; good all-purpose potting soil for containers.

Bloom time:

Flowers appear in mid-to-late spring, and the resulting peppers can remain on the plant until the first frost.

PLANTING

When to plant:

Plant outdoors only after all chance of frost has passed. Minimal nighttime temperatures should be no lower than 60 degrees, and a soil temperature of 70 degrees.

Where to plant:

Ornamental peppers can be grown in vegetable gardens, as well as flower beds and ornamental borders. Their small stature and showy colors also make them perfect for containers. They can also be grown inside, but may require supplemental lighting.

How to plant:

Work some organic matter into the soil. Dig holes deep enough so that plants are at the same level as in their pots. Water thoroughly after planting. Add a layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and control weeds.

ORNAMENTAL PEPPER PLANT CARE

Pruning ornamental peppers:

Pruning isn’t necessary, but growth tips can be pinched to encourage more branching and a fuller plant.

Water:

Keep soil moist, but not waterlogged.

Pests and diseases:

Similar to garden peppers, ornamental peppers can be bothered by aphids and spider mites which can be treated with an insecticidal soap. The most common disease are fungal, including Botrytis and Pythium root rot, and are more prevalent with wet conditions and poor air flow.

Fruit size: 2 inches long, 3/8 inch across Plant height: 8 to 12 inches Days to maturity: 90 ‘Chilli Chili’ is the perfect name for these colorful little peppers, which have been bred to be heat-free so they are safe for households with children. Sweden wrote: A wonderful plant that grows fast and gets loads of blue/purple flowers during the early summer. The peppers are quite small but strong, they are perfect when doing a tomato sauce. I usually keep the plant two to three years, but it is only during the first year that the plant is beautiful. To get fruits when having the plant indoor, you need to pollenize it using a pollinator such as a Q-tip for instance, otherwise no fruits will grow. Also, to get the purple color for the leaves, just put the plant under direct sun, otherwise the leaves will stay green. Pick up the fruits when they are red and let them dry before using them.

Peruvian Purple – One Drop Farm

Description

GLOSSARY:

Indeterminate = Plants continue flowering and fruiting throughout the season so are taller and need to be staked.

Determinate = Plants tend to load with fruit within a window of time (which is usually the length of our short season in Maine anyway) – nice for canning! I would still stake these, but an average tomato cage is plenty tall and strong enough.

Days to maturity = (ex. 55 days green, 75 days red) general estimated days from transplanting until first fruit maturity. The example above means the pepper will be edible green by 55 days from transplant, if you leave it on the plant, it will be red ripe by 75 days. This number is somewhat variable for each garden and seasonal conditions.

We source our seed from reputable and ethically sound sources preferring organically grown seed. Never treated. Never GMO. No Monsanto or Seminis varieties (sorry, Early Girl tomato lovers – you’ll want Bloody Butcher, also an early variety and every bit as good, if not better).

*Note: Our seedlings are raised organically! We offer mostly open-pollinated varieties (the seeds saved will grow true to type) with a few favorite hybrid varieties. Hybrids are in no way, shape or form genetically engineered! (There are no GMOs on our farm!) It simply means a plant of one variety pollinates another variety. It happens in nature every day and breeders have been using this technique for hundreds of years. Some hybrids have been stabilized and have become some of our favorite open pollinated varieties. It is vital to preserve our open-pollinated heirlooms. It is also fun to explore and enjoy the added vigor and disease resistance that hybrids offer. While the seeds you save from a hybrid variety will not grow to be exactly like the plant you saved them from, they contain a smorgasbord of traits from the parent plants that might show up in delicious new ways.

Capsicum fructescens

50 seeds/pack | 95 days | Heirloom

Heralding from Peru, this completely purple plant yields dark purple to almost black peppers. The up-pointed fruits are mildly hot, meaning you can actually put one or two in a salsa and not get blown out of the kitchen! It really is quite a striking plant whose compact nature lends it to patio gardens. These peppers do need a long season to fully mature. Watch as the fruits turn from dark purple to burgundy red when mature.
