Rescue and Recovery of Configuration File (Junos OS)

A rescue configuration file is helpful in the event that your device’s configuration file has been misconfigured. A rescue configuration allows you to define a known working configuration or a configuration with a known state that you can roll back to at any time. This alleviates the necessity of having to remember the rollback number with the rollback command. You can restore the device to this rescue configuration to bring the device back online. If you save this file off the device, the rescue configuration can also be used to restore your device in the event of a software failure.

As of Junos OS Release 16.1, for devices running Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD, provided you have saved a rescue configuration on the device, there is an automatic device recovery mode that goes into action should the system fail to activate the current configuration (amnesiac mode).

Note: To determine which platforms run Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD, see Feature Explorer, enter freebsd , and select Junos kernel upgrade to FreeBSD 10+ .

You can identify that the device has recovered automatically from amnesiac mode by the following:

The syslog UI_DEVICE_IN_RECOVERY_MODE is generated, which indicates that there was a problem in the normal boot time commit and that Junos OS has activated the rescue configuration as the device’s configuration.

The CLI displays the banner Device is running in Recovery Mode in both operational and configuration modes.

This topic covers the following procedures:

Rescue Configuration

A rescue configuration allows you to define a known working configuration or a configuration with a known state for recovery, if necessary. This alleviates the necessity of having to remember the rollback number with the rollback command. The rescue configuration rolls back the device to a known configuration, or can serve as a last resort if your device configuration and the backup configuration files become damaged beyond repair.

To save the most recently committed configuration as the rescue configuration so that you can return to it at any time, issue the request system configuration rescue save command:

user@host> request system configuration rescue save

To return to the rescue configuration, use the rollback rescue configuration mode command. To commit the rescue configuration, thereby activating it, use the commit command.

[edit] user@host# rollback rescue load complete

Note: If the rescue configuration does not exist, or if the rescue configuration is not a complete, viable configuration, then the rollback command fails, an error message appears, and the current configuration remains active.

To delete an existing rescue configuration, issue the request system configuration rescue delete command:

request system configuration rescue save

Configuration management

At startup, the SR Linux loads a JSON configuration file, located at /etc/opt/srlinux/config.json. If this startup configuration does not exist, the system is started using a factory default configuration.

The factory default configuration brings device into management, enables DHCP/v6 on the management interface, adds it to the management network-instance, enables an SSH server, and creates various system logs and applies a default set of CPM filters.

You can optionally create a rescue configuration, which is loaded if the startup configuration fails to load (see Rescue configuration). If the startup configuration fails to load, and no rescue configuration exists, the system is started using the factory default configuration.

Rescue configuration

It wasn’t until I was fiddling around with what my SRX could do did I stumble across something that intrigued me. I was trying to figure out why my Alarm light was being displayed at the front of the SRX when it was operation and fine. I decided to investigate.

[email protected]> show system alarms 1 alarms currently active Alarm time Class Description 2012-12-16 14:09:04 EST Minor Rescue configuration is not set

Rescue configuration. Well, what do we have here readers? A quote of the Juniper support page states ” A rescue configuration file is helpful in the event that your router’s configuration file has been configured wrong. You can restore the router to this rescue configuration to bring the router back online.”

Well isn’t that handy. With my home SRX being used as a lab device and my office devices that reside behind it require internet, this feature is of use to me incase I bork something up. My wife’s Macbook Air and the modem + 1252 access point reside in their own network. This is so I do not affect the SLA’s!

So I have created my SRX configuration that is BAU. This configuration has some zones, has some screens, some rules for what I do. It has my virtual routing instances for labs. I want to save this so let’s get it done.

[email protected]> show system configuration rescue error: No rescue configuration is set.

Alright. Nothing defined so hence the alarm.

[email protected]> request system configuration rescue save

That’s it. We now have a safe, working configuration that can be used in emergencies. This configuration allows a customised version of your own to be used in emergencies. In the SRX branch platforms there is a default built-in configuration that you can press the reset button to revert too.

[email protected]> show system configuration rescue ## Last changed: 2012-12-18 15:14:43 EST version 12.1R3.5;

You can see what the current rescue configuration is by using the above command. Now to load our rescue configuration.

[email protected]# rollback rescue load complete

Now commit and you’re done. You have performed a rescue.

I think this feature is stella. It allows an engineer to guide “hands” through a rescue a simple process**. Press the reset button. This saves a long and maybe expensive drive. I hope this has been helpful and informative. Oh and after saving the rescue configuration my alarm light went from green to out. Happy days.

** Thanks to Per Westerlund for pointing this out in the comments.

Juniper Rescue Configuration and Rollback

Juniper Rescue Configuration

In addition to snapshots, Juniper devices can generate a rescue configuration. This is a known good configuration that’s saved in case there is a disaster.

If there’s a problem with the ‘live’ configuration (such as a corruption), the rescue configuration can automatically be loaded. This also provides a known-good configuration that you may wish to roll back to.

To create the rescue configuration:

user@Switch01> request system configuration rescue save

Use show system configuration rescue to see the entire rescue configuration.

To rollback to the rescue configuration:

user@Switch01# rollback rescue load complete user@Switch01# commit

Some EX-Series switches come with an LCD panel on the front. If you have lost access to the switch, you can use the LCD panel to rollback to the rescue configuration.

During working on Juniper products, such as SRX, NSM and Space, sometimes, there are minor alarms in the system and it requires some actions to clear those alarms based on different situation. Here are some minor alarms I met during working on Juniper products.Noticed there is a minor alarm message at SRX status in NSM, showing in the following screenshot:When the mouse hanging over the Monor, it shows no value specified.Lets log into device from CLI:After a couple of minutes, take a look at NSM Device Status again, it shows green without any alarms.Notes: you may need to reboot both cluster members one by one to clear those alarm messages from system.

8. Junos Rescue Configuration and Rollback

Actually it is not easy to remember the healthy rollback configuration number with a specific date and time which can be loaded in emergency situation. Additionally every configuration backup will be removed after 50 commit commands since, maximum, 50 configuration backup will be stored in the device.

The solution is to take a healthy configuration as rescue configuration and you can restore the device to this rescue configuration in emergency situation when configuration is lost or misconfigured. Rescue configuration will not be deleted or changed with commit commands.

If you save this file remotely, the rescue configuration can also be used to restore your device in the event of a software failure.

Another solution is to use your custom backup policy using “save” and “load” command which is discussed in the previous section.
