PackagesNotFoundError: The following packages are not available from current channels:

I’m somewhat new to Python. I’ve used it in a bunch of projects, but haven’t really needed to stray from its standard setup. I’m trying to install some new packages to get access to functions necessary for a university assignment. When I try to install, I get the following:

(base) C:\Anaconda2\Jupyter>conda install -c python-control -c cyclus slycot control Solving environment: failed PackagesNotFoundError: The following packages are not available from current channels: – slycot – control Current channels: – https://conda.anaconda.org/python-control/win-64 – https://conda.anaconda.org/python-control/noarch – https://conda.anaconda.org/cyclus/win-64 …

And a bunch of other channels similar to that above.

I’ve been searching for a solution, but haven’t found anything substantial. I’ve seen that it may be a problem with Windows, which is what I’m using it on. Past that I haven’t a clue of what is going on.

Keep in mind, I don’t really understand how channels and packages work, so any insight on that matter would be great too.

Hi Aveek,

thanks for reaching out. You could look at the stackoverflow thread, were a similar problem is being discussed:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48493505/packagesnotfounderror-the-following-packages-are-not-available-from-current-cha

One of the suggestions they offer is to use conda config –append channels conda-forge, instead of install. Could you give that a go and let us know if it works?

Best,

Eli

I had real issues getting OpenCV installed and working on Visual Code or any of the other IDE’s.

To solve the issue I eventually had to:

1. Uninstall Anaconda completely.

2. Download the version of Anaconda used by Giles in the video from here : https://repo.anaconda.com/archive/, (It was this one for my pc https://repo.anaconda.com/archive/Anaconda3-2019.07-Windows-x86_64.exe)

3. I ran the initial code suggested in video (conda -V, conda update conda etc.) but instead of running the code suggested in the video (conda install -c conda-forge capstone) I used the following code:

conda install opencv

That worked for me, hopefully helps anyone else with the same issue.

Thanks to this answer for the above code: https://stackoverflow.com/a/57152021

Cheers,

Mark

The provided instructions in the course are incorrect.

The correct command is

conda install -c conda-forge opencv

conda install –help you will see that the -c flag tells conda which channel to install the package from.

The command provided in the course erroneously uses the environment (called capstone) as the second argument of the install command.

I’m somewhat new to Python. I’ve used it in a bunch of projects, but haven’t really needed to stray from its standard setup. I’m trying to install some new packages to get access to functions necessary for a university assignment. When I try to install, I get the following:

(base) C:\Anaconda2\Jupyter>conda install -c python-control -c cyclus slycot controlSolving environment: failedPackagesNotFoundError: The following packages are not available from current channels: – slycot – controlCurrent channels: – https://conda.anaconda.org/python-control/win-64 – https://conda.anaconda.org/python-control/noarch – https://conda.anaconda.org/cyclus/win-64…

And a bunch of other channels similar to that above.

I’ve been searching for a solution, but haven’t found anything substantial. I’ve seen that it may be a problem with Windows, which is what I’m using it on. Past that I haven’t a clue of what is going on.

Keep in mind, I don’t really understand how channels and packages work, so any insight on that matter would be great too.installation conda channel python-controlImprove this questionFollowFollow this question to receive notifications18 AnswersSorted by: Reset to default Highest score (default) Trending (recent votes count more) Date modified (newest first) Date created (oldest first)

Try adding the conda-forge channel to your list of channels with this command:

conda config –append channels conda-forge . It tells conda to also look on the conda-forge channel when you search for packages. You can then simply install the two packages with conda install slycot control .

Channels are basically servers for people to host packages on and the community-driven conda-forge is usually a good place to start when packages are not available via the standard channels. I checked and both slycot and control seem to be available there.8

Have you tried:

pip install

or

conda install -c conda-forge

Managing channels — conda 4.14.0.post16+8b846957c documentation

Managing channels

Conda channels are the locations where packages are stored. They serve as the base for hosting and managing packages. Conda packages are downloaded from remote channels, which are URLs to directories containing conda packages. The conda command searches a default set of channels and packages are automatically downloaded and updated from https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/. Read more about conda channels and the various terms of service for their use.

Different channels can have the same package, so conda must handle these channel collisions.

There will be no channel collisions if you use only the defaults channel. There will also be no channel collisions if all of the channels you use only contain packages that do not exist in any of the other channels in your list. The way conda resolves these collisions matters only when you have multiple channels in your channel list that host the same package.

By default, conda prefers packages from a higher priority channel over any version from a lower priority channel. Therefore, you can now safely put channels at the bottom of your channel list to provide additional packages that are not in the default channels and still be confident that these channels will not override the core package set.

Conda collects all of the packages with the same name across all listed channels and processes them as follows:

Sorts packages from highest to lowest channel priority. Sorts tied packages—packages with the same channel priority—from highest to lowest version number. For example, if channelA contains NumPy 1.12.0 and 1.13.1, NumPy 1.13.1 will be sorted higher. Sorts still-tied packages—packages with the same channel priority and same version—from highest to lowest build number. For example, if channelA contains both NumPy 1.12.0 build 1 and build 2, build 2 is sorted first. Any packages in channelB would be sorted below those in channelA. Installs the first package on the sorted list that satisfies the installation specifications.

Essentially, the order goes: channelA::numpy-1.13_1 > channelA::numpy-1.12.1_1 > channelA::numpy-1.12.1_0 > channelB::numpy-1.13_1

Note If strict channel priority is turned on then channelB::numpy-1.13_1 isn’t included in the list at all.

To make conda install the newest version of a package in any listed channel:

Add channel_priority: false to your .condarc file. OR

Run the equivalent command: conda config — set channel_priority false

Conda then sorts as follows:

Sorts the package list from highest to lowest version number. Sorts tied packages from highest to lowest channel priority. Sorts tied packages from highest to lowest build number.

Because build numbers from different channels are not comparable, build number still comes after channel priority.

The following command adds the channel “new_channel” to the top of the channel list, making it the highest priority:

conda config — add channels new_channel

Conda has an equivalent command:

conda config — prepend channels new_channel

Conda also has a command that adds the new channel to the bottom of the channel list, making it the lowest priority:

conda config — append channels new_channel

A brief introduction — conda-forge 2022.08.17 documentation

The conda team, from Anaconda, Inc., packages a multitude of packages and provides them to all users free of charge in their default channel.

But what if a package you are looking for is not in the default channel? In the past users only had the option to create an Anaconda Cloud account and create their own channel.

This came with a list of disadvantages:

Locating packages was difficult due to them being scattered over many channels.

Combining packages across channels was not always possible due to binary incompatibilities.

Packages were only available for architectures the developer was interested in or had access to.

Channels were often abandoned, updating required locating new channels.

conda-forge is a community effort that tackles these issues:

Enable Conda-forge Channel For Conda Package Manager

This guide explains what is conda-forge channel, how to install packages from conda-forge and finally how to permanently enable conda-forge channel for conda package manager from commandline as well as from Anaconda Navigator GUI in Linux.

What is conda-forge?

By default, the conda package manager installs packages from the defaults channel. All packages in the defaults channel are thoroughly tested and maintained by the Conda team from Anaconda, Inc.

Apart from the official defaults channel, there are some third-party channels available for hosting and managing packages. One such channel is conda-forge .

Conda-forge is community-led channel that provides latest conda packages for a wide-range of software.

The defaults channel may not always contain all packages. There could be some missing packages or it may contain outdated packages. The conda-forge community tackles these issues by maintaining up-to-date packages with the help of thousands of contributors.

Conda-forge project is financially supported by NumFOCUS, a non-profit dedicated to support open source scientific computing community.

Install packages from conda-forge channel

It is possible to install packages from a specific channel without adding it in our system. Let us see an example.

It is recommended to always install packages from conda-forge channel in a new environment instead of the default base environment.

The following command will create a new environment named testapp and install pandas along with its supporting packages in the testapp environment:

$ conda create –channel conda-forge –name testapp pandas

Or,

$ conda create -c conda-forge -n testapp pandas

Install packages from conda-forge channel

Here, -c ( –channel ) flag is used to explicitly mention the channel name i.e. conda-forge in our case.

Activate the newly created “testapp” environment:

$ conda activate testapp

Check the origin of all installed packages in the environment:

$ conda list packages in environment at /home/sk/anaconda3/envs/testapp: # Name Version Build Channel _libgcc_mutex 0.1 conda_forge conda-forge _openmp_mutex 4.5 1_gnu conda-forge ca-certificates 2020.12.5 ha878542_0 conda-forge certifi 2020.12.5 py39hf3d152e_1 conda-forge ld_impl_linux-64 2.35.1 hea4e1c9_2 conda-forge libblas 3.9.0 8_openblas conda-forge libcblas 3.9.0 8_openblas conda-forge libffi 3.3 h58526e2_2 conda-forge libgcc-ng 9.3.0 h2828fa1_18 conda-forge libgfortran-ng 9.3.0 hff62375_18 conda-forge libgfortran5 9.3.0 hff62375_18 conda-forge libgomp 9.3.0 h2828fa1_18 conda-forge liblapack 3.9.0 8_openblas conda-forge libopenblas 0.3.12 pthreads_h4812303_1 conda-forge libstdcxx-ng 9.3.0 h6de172a_18 conda-forge ncurses 6.2 h58526e2_4 conda-forge numpy 1.20.1 py39hdbf815f_0 conda-forge openssl 1.1.1j h7f98852_0 conda-forge pandas 1.2.2 py39hde0f152_0 conda-forge pip 21.0.1 pyhd8ed1ab_0 conda-forge python 3.9.1 hffdb5ce_5_cpython conda-forge python-dateutil 2.8.1 py_0 conda-forge python_abi 3.9 1_cp39 conda-forge pytz 2021.1 pyhd8ed1ab_0 conda-forge readline 8.0 he28a2e2_2 conda-forge setuptools 49.6.0 py39hf3d152e_3 conda-forge six 1.15.0 pyh9f0ad1d_0 conda-forge sqlite 3.34.0 h74cdb3f_0 conda-forge tk 8.6.10 h21135ba_1 conda-forge tzdata 2021a he74cb21_0 conda-forge wheel 0.36.2 pyhd3deb0d_0 conda-forge xz 5.2.5 h516909a_1 conda-forge zlib 1.2.11 h516909a_1010 conda-forge

List installed packages in a conda environment

As you see in the above output, all packages are installed from the conda-forge repository.

If you don’t want to create new environment but install packages in the existing active environment, run:

$ conda install –channel conda-forge pandas

This command will install pandas package from the conda-forge channel in the existing environment.

Let us verify if the conda-forge channel is added by using nay one of the following methods:

$ conda info

This command displays the details of currently active conda environment, including the channels.

[…] channel URLs : https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/main/linux-64 https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/main/noarch https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/r/linux-64 https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/r/noarch […]

If you want to show only the channels, use this command:

$ conda config –show channels

Sample output:

channels: – defaults

To show the default channels only, run:

$ conda config –show default_channels

Sample output:

default_channels: – https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/main – https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/r

Show active channels in conda environment

As you see in the above outputs, conda-forge is not added. We’ve only installed the packages from the conda-forge channel, but we didn’t add it yet.

Now let us go ahead and add or enable conda-forge channel permanently.

Enable conda-forge channel for conda package manager in Linux

As stated already, we can add or enable conda-forge channel either from commadline or from Anaconda Navigator graphical user interface. First, we will see the commanline way.

1. Add conda-forge channel from commandline

To enable conda-forge channel, run the following command from the Terminal:

$ conda config –add channels conda-forge

As stated earlier, conda installs the packages from the defaults channel unless you explicitly tell it to install packages from a specific channel.

To install packages always from conda-forge , set higher priority to conda-forge channel using command:

$ conda config –set channel_priority strict

Here, the channel_priority strict option will place conda-forge channel on top of defaults channel and ensure that all the dependencies will come from the conda-forge channel unless they exist only on defaults .

Check if conda-forge channel is added using command:

$ conda config –show channels channels: – conda-forge – defaults

Did you notice? conda-forge is placed on the top of defaults channel.

Now you can normally install any package on your environment without explicitly mentioning the channel like below:

$ conda install pandas

The package will always be downloaded from the conda-forge channel.

Install packages from conda-forge in Linux

Just in case, if the package or its dependencies are not available in conda-forge , they will be downloaded from defaults channel.

Like I already mentioned, it is recommended to always install packages on a new environment instead of the default base environment. This way you can avoid package conflicts and maintain a clean base environment.

Adding channels via command line is not a big deal. However, some of you prefer the graphical way to get things done. The following section explains how to enable conda-forge channel from Anaconda Navigator GUI.

2. Add conda-forge channel from Anaconda Navigator

Launch Anaconda Navigator using command:

$ anaconda-navigator

Click Channels button:

Click Channels button in Anaconda Navigator GUI

Click Add button:

Click Add to add new channel

Enter the conda-forge channel URL – https://conda.anaconda.org/conda-forge/ . Press ENTER key to update the Channel list.

Enter the conda-forge channel URL

Finally click Update channels button to enable conda-forge channel.

tensorflow-deps – PackagesNotFound…

Hi all,

I’m using my new M1 Pro with the latest Mac OS 12.1 and I’m experiencing issues with installing tensorflow.

I’ve created an environment and have it activated.

I tried

conda install -c apple tensorflow-deps

but returned with

Collecting package metadata (current_repodata.json): done Solving environment: failed with initial frozen solve. Retrying with flexible solve. Collecting package metadata (repodata.json): done Solving environment: failed with initial frozen solve. Retrying with flexible solve.

PackagesNotFoundError: The following packages are not available from current channels:

To search for alternate channels that may provide the conda package you’re looking for, navigate to

https://anaconda.org

and use the search bar at the top of the page.

Note: you may need to restart the kernel to use updated packages.

Did anyone have the same issue and any advice to address this?

Thanks, Andrew

PackagesNotFoundError: The following packages are not available from current channels:

I’m somewhat new to Data Science, I use Jupyter Notebook for my python code and a list of packages for my projects. Every time I come across a challenge I feel motivated to share it since I know someone else shares my shoe size. And this morning for the second time I came across this error ; PackagesNotFoundError : The following packages are not available from current channels: as I tried to install keras,pickle and nltk for my chat box mini project.

This is how it appeared;

(base) C:\Users\Mercy>conda install keras,pickle,nltk

Collecting package metadata (current_repodata.json): done

Solving environment: failed with initial frozen solve. Retrying with flexible solve.

How I solved it using a few lines of command;

(base) C:\Users\Mercy>conda config — append channels keras (base) C:\Users\Mercy>conda config — append channels pickle (base) C:\Users\Mercy>conda config — append channels nltk

Then lastly review the list of packages you have to make sure the packages you needed are available for you.

(base) C:\Users\Mercy>conda list

Thanks for reading.
