UCLA film-scoring certificate?
I second everything Bill said.
To expand on his point, and a point he has mentioned in other threads too… if you talk to 100 different successful composers you will get 100 completely different stories/paths of how they “made it” and became successful.
There is no one “right” way or “wrong” way to go about doing it. As Dr bill says, it’s about making it become what you make of it all.
The one thing I will say… the school you go to will have an impact on your potential future gigs, especially the first ones right out of school. most people end up being loyal to their alma mater and usually look for recent graduates from the school they went to.
Even my career was completely dependent on that. 17 years ago I got hired by a composer to work as his assistant engineer because he went to the same college i had graduated from several years earlier (he graduated in the 80s, I graduated in late 90’s).
Most of the composers I do freelance work for now that are successful can all trace their paths back to the school they went to and getting their first gigs out of school through the school’s alumni network. Both UCLA and USC have good film scoring programs. So either way you can’t go wrong. I know successful composers from both schools.
Again it’s like Dr bill said, the paper degree itself isn’t what gets you gigs. You still have to hustle your butt off, work a lot of crappy gigs and gain experience.. and eventually work your way up.
Do you need to be in LA to do it? No. But can/does it help to be in LA? Absolutely. Atlanta has a lot of TV commercial work and some TV shows… so staying in Atlanta you could get a decent amount of that type of work. But while a lot of films shoot in Georgia, they all do post production here in LA. And that is why it just makes it easier to get yourself in front of the “8 ball” for scoring work out here.
You’ll have to do crappy student films and indie films. You’ll have to probably ghost write for a little bit… you’ll probably have to be an assistant for a while.
The most important thing about doing all of those things is learning not just how to score a film, but how to run a successful scoring business… everything from how the billing works, common budgets, who the key players are, how the interaction with the other departments within a production company work, how to create and manage writing/production workflows to ensure you hit the deadlines, how to coordinate and manage live sessions, how taxes and write offs work for composers, and so on and so forth.
when you are in school you will learn how to orchestrate and score to picture. when you graduate and start working as an assistant, you start learning how to do pretty much everything else outside of writing… and you also learn even more about writing as well.
To answer your first question… “how difficult is it to make a decent income from this…” Well, what’s the timeline and what’s the income target?
I know composers who have been out here struggling for 10 years before they finally felt like they “made it”. I know composers who have been out her in LA for two years before they felt like they “made it”.
It’s a sliding scale based on your expectations and you lifestyle/commitments.
here’s the other factor, nobody is going to pay you to learn how to do something, they are only ever going to pay you to do things you already know how to do. So yes, you went to school and learned the basic building blocks of how to score… but you will have to work as an assistant for the composer doing other things while observing the composer and his staff actually score films for a while and you will have to be doing a bunch of freebie indie/student film projects to get a real grasp of what’s needed before the composer you are working for will ever pay you to start writing for him/her.
You said you wrote a couple of minutes of piano music for your first gig. Now imagine having to write 42 minutes of orchestral music EVERY week for a TV show. Imagine having to write 80 minutes of music for a film. Even if you technically know how to write the music, the ability to write GOOD music quick enough to meet the demands of the productions takes a lot of time and experience to master. And it starts with working as an assistant observing while you are doing the composer’s social media, fixing networking issues, installing plugins and upgrading workstations, etc… then it moves to possibly some score prep work and then some light orchestration work and then eventually to big orchestration work and then on to some small writing assignments and then to bigger writing assignments.
You’ll start off making minimum wage as the assistant and making $0 for all the freelance side gigs you take to gain experience. Eventually you’ll work your way up to making $1000~$1500/day orchestrating… and then obviously even way more than that when you are hired directly to score a show/film…
But how long does it take to get there? That is up to you. That is dependent on your drive and determination and your skill. I’ve had assistants who expect to get all the experience and knowledge they need in the 40 hours the put in at the studio every week… and then they get pissed when all they are doing for years and years is IT stuff and file management. When they “punch out” after their 8 hour day, instead of diving back in and working on an album for an indie band or music for a student film… they hang out with their girlfriend/boyfriend, they go out to dinner, they go out to dance clubs or they’ll go drive up the coast with their significant other, etc… they do EVERYTHING except try to get more work. I moved out here in 2001. The first time I ever even travelled outside of LA was around 2006!!!
so if you are determined, you will make it happen.
These Are The Top 10 Schools for Film and Television Scoring
One of the most intriguing majors offered at select music programs, scoring for film and television has become an integral part of many music programs throughout the entire world.
This is with good reason.
Film and television composition, as well as writing music for video games, has become one of the best avenues for creating a great revenue stream for composers. Whether you are watching a television show, a commercial advertisement, or a new motion picture, you are likely also listening to the dedicated work of a paid commercial music composer.
With so many places in commercial music for composers, that to me sounds like a serious incredible economic opportunity for the aspiring music creator, doesn’t it?
When making this particular list, we looked at what the faculty at each school has accomplished in the film and television scoring markets, whether the students are taught a curriculum that reflects the current requirements of succeeding in the commercial music industry, what recent alumni have done with their film degrees, what kinds of opportunities are available for collaboration with student filmmakers, and more.
Before we get to this list, there are some things to consider when pursuing a film scoring degree.
Almost all programs for film scoring in the US and abroad are at the Master’s degree level only. Two exceptions do exist though, the Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, which offer undergraduate degrees. NYU’s undergraduate composition program does allow its students to pursue a film music concentration in the degree, however it is not a “film music degree.”
Unless you are very serious about pursuing film scoring at the Bachelor’s degree level, I would recommend you first get a degree in music composition from a reputable music school, then go ahead and a get a film and television scoring degree at the Master’s level.
Here are some of our recommendations for the top programs in traditional music composition.
Also, many schools that do teach classes in scoring for visual media are not included in this list. While many schools have fine programs in arts technology that are integrated into a visual media portion, this list is focused solely on schools that provide students with degrees in a film-focused or film-intensive curriculum.
Many of the lists on this website deal with entirely US-based schools. In this particular list, we branch out into international colleges as well.
So without further ado, here are the top 10 colleges for film and television scoring in the entire world.
10. Musicians Institute – Los Angeles, CA
One of only two colleges in the entire United States to offer a film scoring degree at the Bachelor’s Degree level (the other being the Berklee College of Music), the Musicians Institute is a program that trains its students for the real world of film composition. Graduates of this department consistently land jobs in the commercial music field as composers, arrangers, producers, MIDI editors, and more.
The curriculum in MI’s film scoring program is in-depth, with students taking many classes in contemporary arrangement, film scoring, theory, composition, business, history, and even Apple’s Logic Pro program, which is industry standard software in the film, television, and video game music business.
Along with USC, UCLA, and the LA Film School, the Musician’s Institute is located in one of the premiere commercial music hubs of the entire world, making the location of this school ideal for any young musician looking to pursue film scoring at a serious level.
Being in LA, students have the opportunity to extend outside of collaborations at MI and seek out filmmakers of varying professional status for collaborations that will ultimately enrich their educations as commercial music composers.
9. National Film and Television School – Beaconsfield, UK
The Composing for Film & Television program is among the most prestigious schools for film composition in the entire world. The head of the program, musician Dean Humphreys, has worked with Ridley Scott, Franco Zeffirelli, and Roman Polanski, among many other internationally recognized directors.
Alumni of the program include many of the world’s most well-known film composers, including Dario Marianelli, who won an Oscar for his score to the film Atonement. Marianelli has also won a Golden Globe and has previously been nominated for a BAFTA. Other alumni include composer Rob Lane, who composed the score to the HBO hit miniseries John Adams.
Students of the program learn modern midi programming techniques that prepare them for the real world of the film composition industry as well as skills in traditional composition and orchestration. Students also are provided unique opportunities to work alongside filmmakers and future film industry workers.
Recently, the Hollywood Reporter named this college as the very best international college for studies in the filmmaking industry. The Composing for Film & Television Program is available only at the Master’s Level.
8. Royal College of Music – London, UK
One of the premiere schools for film and television scoring, the Royal College of Music’s “Composition for Screen” program is among the world’s finest programs for aspiring commercial music composers.
Some recent guests to the program have included several of the world’s most famous film composers, including Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, The Dark Knight), Rachel Portman (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules), Michael Giacchino (Up, Cars) and Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings, Hugo).
Faculty at the college consist of many of the leading UK commercial music composers, including Area Leader Vasco Haxel, who has written music for award-winning short films, as well as Enrica Sciandrone, who has won several awards for her work in visual media composition.
Students at the college are exposed to an exceptionally well-rounded curriculum that prepares them for the real world of commercial music. Students have access to the Royal College of Music studio, which is a certified commercial recording facility in England.
The location of the school could not be beat, as London is one of the most creative cities in the world, widely considered a mecca of video advertising production as well as a hotspot for European filmmaking. This program, available at the Master’s level only, is possibly the finest of its kind in all of Great Britain.
7. Columbia College – Chicago, IL
The Music Composition for the Screen MFA at Columbia College in Chicago is among the most prestigious in the world. Some of their students have gone on to extraordinary careers in the film industry, with one alum producing music to the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films.
The program is a four semester Master’s degree program, and is widely considered an excellent starting point into the ferociously competitive field of film scoring.
The faculty for film composition at Columbia College is outstanding – one of the faculty members, Gary Chang, has composed music in feature films for a number of top directors, including Jonathan Demme, John Hughes, and John Frankenheimer.
Outside of the film scoring department, the college also boasts one of the premiere visual media departments in the country, known as the Cinema Art + Science program. This program has produced winners of Oscar, Emmy, and Spirit awards. One of the best benefits about this school having this prestigious department is the unparalleled opportunity for collaboration among some of the most diversely talented aspiring filmmakers and composers in the country.
6. University of California – Los Angeles, CA
At UCLA, the Film Scoring certificate, offered through UCLA’s Extension program, is widely considered a top program for visual media composition. This program actually does not require an admissions decision – it is available to students via open enrollment. That said, college-level experience in music or composition is highly, highly recommended.
The faculty for UCLA’s Extension program is very strong. Charles Bernstein, an Emmy-award winning composer who has scored legendary blockbusters such as Nightmare on Elm Street, After Innocence, and the television adaptation of Sea Wolf, teaches scores of students that later find employment in the film industry.
Located in the premiere epicenter for film production in the US, Los Angeles is home to a number top film composers, producers, editors, and studios in the entire world.
5. Pulse College – Dublin, Ireland
The lists I make on this website typically deal with only U.S. based programs, however this particular list branches out into international programs. Pulse College, an exceptional one-year intensive Master’s film program based in Dublin, Ireland, boasts some of the most extraordinarily accomplished faculty in the world in any music department focusing on commercial music.
Faculty members include Andy Hill, who was the former Vice President of Music for Walt Disney Pictures, Daniel Carlin, an Emmy-award winning music editor who has worked on over 100 film and television productions, and Conrad Pope, who helped orchestrate the music to the newer Star Wars trilogy. Other faculty members have been nominated for the Golden Globe award, written music for high-profile video games including Bioshock, and scored movies for blockbuster films.
The school also, to my knowledge, has Christopher Young on the faculty, who is a prominent faculty member at USC Thornton’s Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program (USC is also on this list).
The college’s one-year intensive curriculum, running from September to August, prepares students to work in the professional field as composers, music editors, orchestrators, music supervisors, and music producers. The curriculum offers classes in overall musical artistry, current technology used by industry professionals, and music business.
One of the best colleges in the world for film scoring, Pulse College should be a serious choice for any musician looking into colleges for film scoring.
4. Seattle Film Institute’s Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program – Seattle, WA
The Seattle Film Institute is the largest filmmaking school in the Northwest region of the US; as one of the most well-known filmmaking schools in the world, the institute hosts an excellent one-year Master’s degree in film scoring. An intensive curriculum, this is a premiere school that teaches students the most important parts of being a film composer in 2015, which is film history, artistry, and current technology.
What many prospective and budding young film composers may not realize is that most film scores produced today are actually created with digital libraries of acoustic instrument samples as well as synthesizers. Although not every modern film score is like that, the majority produced today are made almost completely digitally.
Some key software products the students learn at this institute include Finale, Logic, Pro-Tools, Sibelius, and Digital Performer, all modern programs that are regularly used in the music production and commercial music industries.
Additionally, students are given nine opportunities to record their music with live session musicians in a professional studio setting.
I am especially fond of this program because their goal is so clearly laid out – in just one year, the school places students into a pressure cooker of intense learning resulting in a professional demo reel that can be used to obtain future paid commercial opportunities.
The principal instructor of this program is Hummie Mann, an Emmy-award film music composer who was named by Variety Magazine in 2010 as one of the 10 Leaders in Learning. Hummie has an extraordinary track record as a teacher, frequently producing students who ascend the ranks of the film music industry.
Schools that focus on the value and future of their music students are compelling options, and this program most certainly does exactly that.
3. Berklee College of Music – Boston, MA
Widely considered to be among the three best film scoring programs in the US, along with the next two on this list, the Berklee College of Music has a distinguished history of graduating composers that become exceptionally accomplished as film & television scorers, music editors, music arrangers, and more.
Led by department chair George Clinton, who has gained success scoring the music to over 100 films including Austin Powers, the faculty is second-to-none in terms of accomplishment in the commercial music industry. Other faculty members include Ben Houge, a notable video game music composer, Alison Plante, a composer who has written extensively for television commercials, and Sheldon Mirowitz, who has written scores for Miramax and HBO Films productions.
The approach to teaching film scoring students at the Berklee College of Music is one of collaboration. Assistant Chair of the Film Scoring department at Berklee relays to us this philosophy, according to her biography on the Berklee website:
“Knowing how to collaborate is so important. Music for media—whether it’s games, interactive media, film, or television—doesn’t stand alone; it works with the other elements and that means that you’re working with other people. We promote collaboration in a lot of classes in our department and in extracurricular activities, and we’re continuing to broaden the possibilities for collaboration in the curriculum.”
One of only two schools to offer an undergraduate film scoring degree in the entire United States, the Berklee College of Music is an excellent choice for any aspiring film composer.
2. New York University – New York, NY
One of the best film scoring programs in the entire world, New York University’s film scoring faculty boasts a number of distinguished people exceptionally successful in the commercial music industry, including Composer-In-Residence Ira Newborn, who scored many classic films of the 80s and 90s including Sixteen Candles as well as Ace Ventura Pet Detective.
NYU has a competitive distinction that makes it stand out above the rest of the crowd, which is the Maurice Kanbar Film Institute, a school named after an entrepreneur who donated $5 million to its creation. The Maurice Kanbar Film Institute boasts over 1,000 student filmmakers, students that are constantly collaborating with the musicians in the Scoring for Film & Multimedia program. Having high-level student filmmakers in the school offers opportunities for collaboration that are incredibly valuable to the education of an aspiring film composer.
Students of the school frequently find success in the commercial music industry upon graduation. Various recent alumni accomplishments include winning the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival, scoring theatrical releases involving high-profile celebrities such as Forrest Whitaker, and providing the soundtrack to films featured in the Sundance Film Festival.
1. University of Southern California Thornton School of Music – Los Angeles, CA
Possibly the most well-known film scoring program in the entire world, the “Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television” faculty at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music is uniquely unparalleled. Some of the faculty members include veteran television scorer Jack Smalley, who has written music for the long-running television drama Murder, She Wrote as well as Charlie’s Angels.
Another faculty member, Bruce Broughton, has received 10 Emmy awards for his work in television, as well as Oscar and Grammy nominations. Composer Christopher Young, composer of the “Spider-Man 3” and “Swordfish” soundtracks, is yet another name that demonstrates the excellence and diversity of faculty at this distinguished film program.
The students at the USC program are exceptionally accomplished for their young age. Many, if not all, have already begun their forays into professional film composition. Some current students’ music has been featured on Nickelodeon and ESPN, while another student has written advertisements for sneaker company New Balance. Several have written music for independent productions that have been viewed millions of times online.
On top of the high quality students and faculty, the location of the school could not be better. Located in the undisputed mecca of film and television production in the entire US, Los Angeles is home to many of the world’s finest film & television studios as well as producers and composers of commercial music. Alumni of USC’s film scoring department frequently enjoy paid opportunities in this lucrative entertainment industry.
This program is one-year Master’s certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television, so a prospective undergraduate composer wishing to pursue a film career may be better off checking out the school’s exceptional undergraduate degree in traditional music composition before applying to this exceptionally competitive program.
Honorable Mention: Los Angeles Film School
What Is A Film Composer And How Do I Become One?
The narrative and emotional intensity a musical score gives a film is undeniable. All the most epic movie scenes have almost no dialogue, but move forward through powerful visuals buoyed by powerful musical scores. The film composer may not be the high-profile stars of the movies, but the movies would be deadly flat without them.
What does a film composer do?
The first point to understand about being a film composer is that scoring a film is a team endeavor. If you have visions of being a mad, solo genius composing feverishly in your studio – film composing isn’t for you. Film composers work with directors, producers, writers and possibly even actors. So it’s essential that you work well with other artistic personalities. You’ll sit together as a team in “spotting sessions” to plot which scenes require background, scoring as well as:
What is the emotional content of the scene
How and why will musical composition enhance that content
What type of music will support the scene
What are the moments – the millisecond – certain musical points must be hit, where the music starts and ends, where it crescendos, where it retreats
The second critical point to realize is that film composers aren’t telling their own stories. They’re composing to someone else’s vision and that vision controls everything. A film composer writes the score, which is the sum of all the original music going into a film. They’ll demo pieces of the score regularly to the film’s creative team for feedback on how it’s fitting into the scene. Film composers are also responsible for the recording of the film score.
This isn’t to say that film composers don’t have their own voice. Having your own voice is critical to bringing something unique to the project. Yet, a film composer is expected to be versatile and reinforce the artistic vision of the director.
In the end stages of a project, the film composer again sits with directors and editors to insert the score into the film and create a final cut of the movie.
The rule of thumb is that a film will have roughly half its duration requiring background music. So a 90-minute film would typically require a 45 minute score. You can expect it to take anywhere from two to four months to score a film.
How do you become a film composer?
Well, it’s not easy. Becoming a film composer is a highly competitive field. Composing film scores doesn’t just get strong marks for glamour and compensation, which attracts a lot of people. There just aren’t that many films made each year. The demand for film composers isn’t great.
But someone is composing movie scores, so why not you? If this is really where your heart lies, be ready to put forth the effort.
Most of the well-known film composers already had established reputations in other musical fields before moving into film. You can go to school and get a degree in film composition, but most of these programs are master degrees. Thus it may be more worthwhile to get a strong background in music, music composition, as well as general liberal arts. A film composer needs a strong background in arts, history and culture so they can bring this sensibility and knowledge into their work.
Here’s the point that is so obvious it’s easy to overlook: Love movies! If you don’t love movies the way you love music, this is going to be a tough road. The people who’ll hire you, directors and producers, are movie geeks. Think Quentin Tarantino. If they tell you they want a score with the knuckle gripping of the “Bullitt” car chase combined with the incongruence of a ”Kill Bill” scene, you should know what they’re talking about.
Watch and learn about movies and moviemaking with the same intensity you give to music and composing. One place to start is with the great film composers; not to mimic them but to learn from them.
A film composer is also in sales (of yourself and your point of view), project management, and team building. Develop skills in networking, socializing, and time management. Networking will be a large part of how you find opportunities. You’re not going to be able to network with the Hollywood bigwigs. If you could, you’d already have an agent.
Instead, work (for free!) and network with film students, budding filmmakers. Network with your peer group to get experience and build the relationships you’ll need in the future. You’ll also need the student film work to get the experience and demo tapes you’ll need to make the leap into paid work. To do this kind of networking, you’ll need to live in one of the movie capitals: Los Angeles, New York, possibly Toronto or London.

How Much Money Do Film Scorers Get Paid?
Music has long been a source of emotion in movies. Take your average horror film. By the music alone, you probably know that the killer is lurking just around the corner. Dramas, on the other hand, use scores to expose inner feelings or heighten the tension between characters. Regardless of their use, scores are almost always written by a composer, and the rates will vary from project to project.
Composer Salary Overview
In 2019, music directors and composers averaged $64,670 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS. Because high salaries can sometimes skew the average, median wage is often used to predict a music director’s or composer’s true earnings. Half of all people in either of these occupations earned less than $51,670 a year. Neither figure, however, gives a film music budget breakdown or differentiates the salary of a music director from that of a composer. The two are rarely paid the same wage.
Film Scoring Rates
As you might expect, rates vary greatly by type of project, as well as the film budget. If the composer is hired to simply score the film, she’s paid a “creative fee.” That can be anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 for an ultra-low budget indie film, up to $300,000 for a mid-level feature, reports DIY Film Composer. The Hollywood blockbuster might come in closer to $2 million, but there are only so many Hans Zimmers and John Williams making this kind of money!
Package Deals
Not all composers are paid creative fees. In fact, this is becoming less frequent in the film industry. Instead, studios are now opting for a “package deal,” where the composer actually pays for all productions costs and the studio is given a finished product. For a studio feature, composers may be paid $60,000 to $250,000 for a low budget film, $250,000 to $350,000 for a medium budget film and $400,000 to $2 million for a high budget film.
Ultimately, it depends what has been budgeted for the music and composition aspects of the film. According to Think Sync Music, there’s a consensus that 10 percent to 15 percent is a good rule of thumb to have in mind for music. So if you’re working on a small-budget indie, the budget for composition could be tiny.

Certificate Programs at UCLA Extension 2022-2023
The overall experience at UCLA Extension was simply amazing. Starting from the point that you’re studying in one of the top-ranked universities in the world, along with its beautiful campus, and the fact that it’s located in one of the most incredible and exciting cities on the planet has really made enrolling at UCLA Extension one of the best decisions in my life.
I took the Certificate Program in Marketing. After studying Engineering in Spain and Sweden, I wanted to turn around to my educational background and learn something more creative like Marketing.
It’s great the way the Certificate Program is organized. It allowed me (without having studied Marketing before) to start it by taking some introductory classes, while ending it by taking very advanced classes in which I could bring on everything I learned on previous courses, along with my inner creativity and ideas.
I found especially useful the fact that an important part of every course was a big project presentation in front of the class. That doesn’t only allow international students (or non-native speakers) to brush up on their English skills faster, but it’s also a great way to improve your public speaking skills. Because let’s face it, speaking in public will probably be a constant situation in the professional world.
I’d highlight the quality and experience of the professors. They aren’t just Marketing instructors but truly experienced professionals in the field (CEO, Presidents, Founders, etc…), which provides the student with great insights from real-world cases in big corporations. I’d also like to point out how enthusiastic and helpful they were, keeping me engaged with each course from the very beginning.
Having classmates from all over the world it’s truly a fantastic learning experience. In class, you learn to communicate and discuss very different topics with people with different points of view from yours. During group projects, most members are from different places with different backgrounds and require a lot of communication to reach the project goals. That prepares the student for similar situations that can happen in the professional world. And not to mention the fact that now I have friends all over the world!
