Dear SAPLearners, in this blog post we will learn about VBFA table changes in S/4HANA. This blog post is part of S/4HANA technical tutorials.
Lets get started
1. VBFA Primary Key change
Primary key of VBFA table has been changed compared to ECC system. A new field “RUUID” – SD Unique Document Relationship Identification is added.

2. Removal of VBFA fields
Extended SD Document Category fields VBTYPEXT_V, VBTYPEXT_N are removed.
3. VBTYP Field Length Extension
SD Document Category field “VBTYP” (VBTYP_V & VBTYP_N) is extended to CHAR-4 in S/4 HANA which is previously CHAR-1 in ECC system.
4. VBFA-STUFE Mystery
In initial release of S/4 HANA the field “STUFE” was removed. The field STUFE is introduced again in S/4 HANA 1511 SP04, 1610 SP02, 1709 and higher releases.
The decision to remove the field during initial S/4 HANA release is to reduce memory consumption. This lead to data inconsistency due to archiving of documents which is supported in S/4 HANA for on-premise installations.
So the field “STUFE” is added again to store the in-direct relationships of SD documents in the table.
Custom code adaption is required if the field is used during SELECT statements and the custom code has to be changed depends on S/4 HANA releases.
To mitigate custom code changes during migrations or installations it is recommended to use the new utility class “CL_SD_DOCUMENT_FLOW_RT” which is release independent.
Following are the list of methods for use to get SD document flow.
Method Description HAS_SUCCESSOR Check if a successor of a specific type exists HAS_PREDECESSOR Check if a predecessor of a specific type exists GET_SUCCESSORS Get successors of a specific type and path length GET_PREDECESSORS Get predecessors of a specific type and path length CONSTRUCTOR Constructor BUILD_XVBFA_FROM_PREDECESSOR Get all predecessors up to a maximum path length
In addition to the above a utility class CL_SD_DOC_CATEGORY_UTIL and interface IF_SD_DOC_CATEGORY is delivered for the SD document category (VBTYP).
Below is the sample code on how to use class CL_SD_DOCUMENT_FLOW_RT to get SD flow documents.

I am trying to understand the new S/4 HANA document flow table (VBFA) as it only shows subsequent or preceding documents with one single document type only. e.g. contract will show only Sales orders but no deliveries like it was before S/4.
Any idea of how to make it work like before or alternative solutions?

Hi,
I need to find a Function Module or a BAPI that can update the document flow table of Outbound Deliveries (VBFA).
All of the BAPI and FM that I found do not seem to update this table.
My problem is as follows:
I unassign a Handling Unit from an Outbound Delivery using a Function Module.
My first problem is: by doing this operation, the packing status of the Outbound Delivery does not change (I found a solution using a user-exit).
My second problem is that the Outbound Delivery Document Flow is not updated (in this case, the only thing that the standard SAP program does is erase).
Does anyone know any way to update this table ?

So we all know that S/4Hana is the latest version and the future of SAP but what about the tables we are familiar with, are they still available and what do tables like VBFA look like in an S4Hana SAP system. If you havent seen or logged into an S/4Hana system you might be surprise how similar it looks to the previous ERP/ECC version. Infact when using using the gui it is difficult to tell the difference, and for many of database tables the same is true.Infact even for tables that have been replaced in hana, SAP have purposfully created versions of the old/original tables for backward compatability. This means your existing ABAP code will still work while you implement changes that take advantage of the new functionality and Hana in-memory tables.

On a recent ATC check on one of SAP HANA AMDP procedure codes, I realized that TT_VBFA (Sorted Table Type of VBFA) is not the correct ABAP dictionary object and VBFA_T (Table Type for Structure VBFA) should be used for code quality for your ABAP developments.
Instead of using the correct table type for VBFA, I mean wrong selection of TT_VBFA instead of VBFA_T caused listing of following ATC checks in the error list.

As seen in below, all above ATC checks are violated because the AMDP class method parameter uses an inappropriate data type for VBFA table type.
After replacing TT_VBFA with VBFA_T in method definition in ABAP code, all above errors are resolved in one correction.
4 HANA: Simplifications in Sales & Distribution Data
SAP S/4 HANA is the new offering from SAP built on the high performance In-memory platform HANA with an enriching user experience using FIORI apps.This new system includes major changes and massive simplifications ranging form changes in underlying data models to new user interface through FIORI apps.
Objective:
The objective of this blog is to understand the data model simplifications in SD area through a comparative study with a non S/4 system.
Below are the major simplification points:
Status tables VBUK and VBUP have been eliminated and the new status fields have been added to:
VBAK and VBAP for sales order header and item LIKP and LIPS for delivery document header and item VBRK for billing document header No status fields are present for billing items.
Simplification of document flow table VBFA
Document index tables like VAKPA , VAPMA etc. have been done away with.
Comparison:
Let us understand the differences by looking at the table structures:
VBUK and VBUP are still present in S/4 HANA but they are not filled when an order is created.
The status fields have been added through append structure.

If any custom fields have been added to VBUP or VBUP tables in source system, they will have to be added to respective document tables in S/4 HANA system.
An append field to the document header status table VBUK must be added to one or several of the document header tables VBAK, LIKP, or VBRK. This decision depends on which of the document types the respective field is relevant for.
An append field to document item status table VBUP must be added to one or more of the document item tables VBAP or LIPS.

When a sales order is created in a non S/4 HANA system:
Sales Order: 7137:
VBAK table holds the order header details
Order status information is present in VBUK table
Sales Order in S/4 HANA system:
VBAK table contains both the header details as well as the header status
Header status fields are now added to VBAK table
Table VBUK is present but is not filled.
Reason VBUK / VBUP are still present in S/4 HANA:
Since the status tables are not being filled it can be questioned why the tables are still present and not removed from system altogether. The reason for this is to enable smooth transition for those opting for migration to S/4 HANA system.
New function modules have been written which read the document status fields from VBAK , LIKP aur VBRK tables and populate in output whose structure is similar to that of VBUK.
For example FM SD_VBUK_READ_FROM_DOC is a new FM that fills VBUK structure for one SD document out of document header tables. The data is fetched depending upon the document type.
The output structure ES_VBUK still refers to VBUK table.
Any custom fields added to appends like VBAK_STATUS will be read by this FM.
Advantages:
Reduced memory footprint : Since fewer tables are involved this means reduction of redundant data and simplified document flow.
Now if we need to query the order table on the basis of document status we can simply do so by 1 single query on VBAK table instead of join on VBAK and VBUK.
