Weather & Seasons
Spring and Fall are considered by many the most pleasant time to visit the Southern Appalachians.
Spring: In the Spring, daytime temperatures and warm and evenings are cool while the flowering shrubs are in bloom and the waterfalls are running. Water sources such as springs are most reliable this time of year.
Fall: In the fall, the broadleaf deciduous trees put on a bright display of autumn color, though waterfalls may not be as impressive and springs and other water sources less reliable. The air is cooler and crisper and visibility should be prime for long-range views.
Summer: Summer in this part of the country can be oppressively hot and humid and even the higher elevation and ample tree cover will not keep the hiker from feeling overheated, sticky and dirty. High humidity and haze plus deep leaf cover mean limited long-range vistas, though it is in summer that the term “temperate rainforest” will have the most meaning to and be most appreciated by the visitor.
Winter: Winter in the South Appalachians can range from cool and damp to cold and severe with bouts of deep snow following major storms. In other words, while this range may be relatively low in elevation and southern in latitude, mountains are still mountains and can bring unpredictable and potentially dangerous weather.
Sitting on the border of Lumpkin and Union Counties in the highcountry of northeast Georgia, Wolf Laurel Top is quite the treat for AT hikers. The actual summit is indistinct and tree-covered, like many summits in the area, but features a fine (dry) campsite in the general summit area. It’s the views from the southeast aspect of Wolf Laurel Top that draw visitors near the top of this peak. Along with these views, proximity to Neels Gap and fine condition of the Appalachian Trail makes this peak a fairly popular day outing.Just southeast of the highpoint, dark rock ledges jut out from the grass and shrubs providing open vistas of surrounding mountains, including an impressive close-up of nearby Cow Rock Mountain . Off in the eastern distance is the distinct form of Yonah Mountain . The Wolf Laurel Top overlooks are a dramatic experience in an an area of generally softer terrain.Unranked240 feetCowrockThe Appalachian Trail Conservancy Chattahoochee National Forest Springer Mountain to Bly Gap GEORGIAThe AT crosses very near summit of Wolf Laurel Top, though nothing I found indicated the highpoint had been reached (such as a cairn or other marker). As with many mountains in this region, the highpoint is rather indistinct.The peak can be accessed from the west via Neels Gap (elevation 3,109 feet) for an undulating, approximately 6.5 mile roundtrip outing. To reach Neels Gap from Dahlanega (about 60 miles north of Atlanta), follow U.S. 129/19 roughly 22 miles north.For a shorter but steep outing, park where the AT intersects GA 348 (Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway) at Tesneete Gap (3,138 feet) for an undulating approximately 4.5 mile roundtrip, including an ascent of Cow Rock Mountain both ways.There is no fee to visit this part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and permits are not required for overnight stays in the backcountry. Please be mindful of posted Forest Service user warnings, such as “problem bear” alerts and campfire bans. Note that the Appalachian Trail is open to foot traffic only. Motorized vehicles and pack animals are not permitted. Wolf Laurel Top lies within the 9,100 acre Raven Cliffs Wilderness.The nearest shelter to Wolf Laurel Top is the Whitley Gap Shelter. This small shelter sleeps only about 6 people and requires a 1.2 mile side-trip from the main AT corridor.The Walasi-Yi Center at Neels Gap has lodging in their historic hiker hostel. The hostel is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, lodging is available on a first come, first served basis.

Take in multiple expansive views from Cowrock Mountain and Wolf Laurel Top in this popular hike along the Appalachian Trail. This is another hike I find great in winter as you get better views on the way up. Since you’ll be travelling southbound, depending on the time of year you may pass quite a few thru-hikers.
The parking area at Tesnatee Gap is small so get there early in the warmer months. This hike starts on the west side of parking area about halfway back. Look for the trail that goes straight up. Steep and rocky are the two words that describe this hike best and it begins right away. Parts of the trail can be wet and slippery and many of the rocks are loose so pay attention to your footing.
After a quarter mile, the trail evens out for a bit, giving you a nice reprieve, but ultimately just delaying the continued onslaught. At just before .4 miles in, the trail begins a series of switchbacks that continue until the summit. At one of these turns, the trail looks like it splits, but it rejoins immediately.
At .84 miles, hike out onto a large exposed rock viewing area at the summit of Cowrock Mountain. Here take in the views of the surrounding mountains, including Yonah Mountain. I have since learned of and explored a secret trail from the main summit view to two more expansive views better than this. See the Cowrock Mountain via Tesnatee Gap hike for more info and photos. Ending your hike here is still a worthy adventure, but further views await along the longer route to Wolf Laurel Top.
Behind the view, venture further southbound along the white-blazed AT. Another incredible view awaits you just on the other side of the summit. Continue on, passing another view at 1.2 miles. The trail evens out as it follows the ridgeline between Cowrock and Wolf Laurel Top, passing a large campsite on the left.
Just when you’re getting comfortable, begin the shorter but just as steep and just as rocky climb to the summit of Wolf Laurel Top. Near the top a short side trail branches off to the left for another excellent view. From here you can see the other side of Cowrock and peeking out in the distance you can still see Yonah Mountain. Continue up the side trail through another large campsite to reconnect with the AT. Nothing to do now but head home. Be mindful of loose rocks and take it easy on the way back down.

Appalachian Trail – Wolf Laurel Top is a 6 mile blue singletrack trail located near Appalachian Trail Corridor (GA) Georgia. This hike primary trail can be used both directions and has a hard overall physical rating.
WOLF LAUREL TOP (VIA TESNATEE GAP)
Highlights:
The Chattahoochee National Forest is one of two National Forests in the State of Georgia, and it takes its name from the Chattahoochee River whose headwaters begin in the North Georgia mountains. The River and the area were given the name by the English settlers who heard it from the Indians that once lived here. The Chattahoochee National Forest was created when the Forest Service purchased 31,000 acres in Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin and Union Counties from the Gennett family in 1911 for $7.00 per acre. In the beginning, the Chattahoochee was part of the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests in North Carolina and Tennessee, but eventually the Forest Service made additional land purchases and expanded the Chattahoochee to its current size of nearly 750,000 acres.
The walk to Wolf Laurel Top is an in-and-out, backtrack hike that is ideal for day hiking, but it can also be done as an overnight backpacking trip. This hike starts along the Richard Russell Scenic Highway and ascends around 700′ feet to a scenic overlook along the trail at Cow Rock Mountain. There are spectacular views to the east, south, and west from here and its a great place to take a break after the long climb from the parking area. From here, the Appalachian Trail continues another mile to Wolf Laurel Top. It drops in to Baggs Creek Gap where there is a campsite to the left and a blue-blazed side trail down to a piped spring to the right. The final climb to Wolf Laurel Top is about 250 feet where there are outstanding 180 degree views in the summer and 360 degree views in the winter.
