Johnny Lee (computer scientist)

American computer scientist

Johnny Chung Lee (born 1979) is an American computer engineer known for his inventions related to the Wii Remote. He is involved with human-computer interaction.

Education [ edit ]

Lee earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering at the University of Virginia in 2001 and a Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University’s Human–Computer Interaction Institute.[1]

Career [ edit ]

In 2001, Lee was a research intern at the University of Southern California’s Integrated Media Systems Center. From 2002 to 2004, he was a research intern at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories. He worked as a research intern at Microsoft in 2005 and remained with the company as a researcher until 2011. While Lee was a core member of Kinect development team, he approached Adafruit Industries with the idea of a driver development contest and personally financed it.[2]

Sometime in 2008, Lee posted video demos and sample code at his website taking advantage of the high resolution (1024×768 Pixels) high frame-rate (100 Hz) IR camera built-in into the controller of the Wii video game console, the Wii Remote, for finger tracking, low-cost multipoint interactive whiteboards, and head tracking for desktop VR displays. This was the subject for his presentation at the prestigious TED conference in the same year, where he demonstrated several such applications. The WiimoteProject forum has become the discussion, support, and sharing site for Lee’s Wii Remote projects and other newer developments.

Lee was named one of the world’s top 35 innovators under 35 (TR35) in 2008. After that, Lee was hired by Microsoft to work on their Kinect project He was later hired at Google to work on Project Tango.[3][4]

Lee’s other projects include an interactive whiteboard, 3D head tracking, finger tracking, and a DIY telepresence robot.[5] He YouTube videos have received over 10 million views, with the Wii Remote head tracking project being his most viewed. He also demonstrated several of these applications at events such as TED, and has been featured on popular websites such as Slashdot, Gizmodo, hackedgadgets, Popular Science, Wired, and Engadget several times. Various magazines, newspapers and television programs have featured interviews with Lee, and he has also made appearances at events such as Maker Faire.

Electronic Arts had initially stated that Lee’s Wii Remote head tracking technology would appear as an Easter egg in the game Boom Blox,[6] but later announced that the feature had been removed.[7]

Johnny Lee: Free or cheap Wii Remote hacks

Some research and development requires big and expensive equipment, resources, and sensors. It’s awesome when innovators make cool technology more affordable, accessible and available to young students and hackers. As a student at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Johnny Lee explored ways to use the remote control devices of a Nintendo WII in his human computer interaction(HCI) research. (Check out his cool blog here.) It isn’t commonly known that WII remote controls or “WIIMotes” can be connected to computers/Android devices through Bluetooth. By sharing his Wiimote experiments using video and social media in 2008, Johnny Lee spawned a movement of experimentation and software tinkering. Mr. Lee has provided a brief introduction to his work on the following TED talk.

In contrast to other programmable sensor devices, a WIIMote probably costs you $40. It provides accelerometers, gyroscopes, an infrared camera, and common game controller features. You may have a Wiimote already in your house. Brian Peek has published a wonderful open source library to empower .NET developers to use WIIMote sensors in their applications. The various aspects of the WiiMote are exposed using C# events. The code to get started is very simple. The community experimentation based on Johnny Lee’s work has been delightful. Check out some of the cool hacks and experiments created by the Johnny Lee, Brian Peek and the community.

Wii hacker Johnny Lee is working on Project Natal

Here’s a little tidbit of news that may give the doubtful more faith in how well Microsoft’s Project Natal will work once out from the conference and into the living room; Johnny Chung Lee, the man famous for creating his own headtracking device for the Wii, among other modifications to make better use of the system’s sensors, has revealed that he is part of the Project Natal team. Here are a few words from the man himself on what he thinks of the project:

Speaking as someone who has been working in interface and sensing technology for nearly 10 years, this is an astonishing combination of hardware and software. The few times I’ve been able to show researchers the underlying components, their jaws drop with amazement… and with good reason. The 3D sensor itself is a pretty incredible piece of equipment providing detailed 3D information about the environment similar to very expensive laser range finding systems but at a tiny fraction of the cost. Depth cameras provide you with a point cloud of the surface of objects that is fairly insensitive to various lighting conditions allowing you to do things that are simply impossible with a normal camera.

According to his personal blog, he wishes to express that he is but a small part of a very talented team of individuals, but just knowing that he is there makes me feel a little better about Natal. It still seems pretty far-fetched that the system is expected to work as well as shown at Microsoft’s conference yesterday, but Johnny Lee’s smaller pet projects have blown our minds plenty of times before.
