Common Name: foamy bells Type: Herbaceous perennial Family: Saxifragaceae Zone: 4 to 9 Height: 1.50 to 2.00 feet Spread: 1.50 to 2.00 feet Bloom Time: May to July Bloom Description: White Sun: Full sun to part shade Water: Medium Maintenance: Medium Suggested Use: Ground Cover Flower: Showy Leaf: Colorful, Good Fall Attracts: Butterflies Garden locations
Culture Best grown in organically rich, humusy, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Performs well in full sun in the north, but prefers some shade (particularly in the heat of the afternoon) in the south. In the St. Louis area, best foliage color may occur in sunny spots with part afternoon shade. Scorch and general foliage decline usually occur if soils are allowed to dry out. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is particularly important. Remove stems of faded flowers to encourage additional bloom and to tidy plantings so that the attractive foliage can be fully appreciated. In cold winter climates, a winter mulch applied after the ground freezes will help prevent root heaving. Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years.
Noteworthy Characteristics × Heucherella, commonly called foamy bells, is an intergeneric hybrid between Heuchera and Tiarella. It is generally more compact and delicate in appearance than its Heuchera parent. It is a clump-forming perennial which typically produces a compact, basal mound of rounded to lobed leaves usually with distinctive veining. Foliage clump typically rises 5-8″ tall. Foliage will usually retain some color in cold winter climates such as the St. Louis area. Tiny star-shaped flowers appear in airy to dense panicles atop stems rising well above the foliage clump (typically to 15-20″ tall) in late spring to mid-summer.
‘Brass Lantern’ was bred by Janet N. Egger of Terra Nova Nurseries of Canby, Oregon. It originated from a controlled cross between a proprietary unreleased Heuchera villosa hybrid as the seed parent and a massed selected Tiarella as the pollen parent. It has large, palmately lobed, glossy leaves that are brassy gold with red centers and age to olive green and brown. It has small, star-shaped white flowers on dark, 28 in. tall stems. ‘Brass Lantern’ grows 1 1/2 to 2 ft. tall and wide. United States Plant Patent PP#22,396 issued on December 20, 2011.
Problems No serious insect or disease problems. Frost heaving of roots may occur when winter temperatures fluctuate widely.

Buying Perennials from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our perennials after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy perennials, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.
From late autumn onwards and dependent on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Information

Heucherellas are a cross between Tiarellas and Heucheras. As expected these are woodland plants and shade lovers, liking slightly more moist growing conditions than do Heucheras. The cross provides the vigorous spreading growth of Tiarellas and the fascinating leaf shapes, with the incredible array of colours of the Heucheras. Heucherella ‘Brass Lantern’ will deliver outstanding vigour combined with brassy gold and red spring colour on maple shaped leaves. A beacon in the garden. Use this large, evergreen, landscape perennial in mixed beds, under high branching shrubs, or in a container. Spikes of white flowers on dark stems. Winter colour will evolve to olive and brown. Best colour contrast with some shade.
As a H. villosa cross, you can expect good heat and humidity tolerance.
Grow Heucherella ‘Brass Lantern’ in part shade for best results and colours. Protect from intense direct sunlight particularly afternoon sun. Prefers moist but well drained, humus rich soils. Water and feed occasionally with slow release fertiliser. Easy care. Hardy. 0.50 x 0.60m

Plant Profile for Heucherella ‘Brass Lantern’
Heucherella ‘Brass Lantern’
Foamy Bells Plant number: 1.268.070
A hybrid between Coral Bells and Foam Flower, combining the best traits of both into one plant. This vigorous selection forms a large mound of deeply-lobed, brassy gold and red, maple-shaped leaves. Sprays of small white bell flowers appear on dark stems in late spring. Winter colour is olive green and brown. A great choice for shady borders as well as in mixed containers. Evergreen in mild winter regions. Foliage should be left alone in the fall, but plants may be tidied up in spring by removing any brown or tired-looking leaves.
