Guide: How to Care for Your New Plant(s)

Hydrangea macrophylla Endless Summerยฎ Blushing Brideยฎ

Latin Name Pronunciation: hye-dran’jee-uh

Growing H. macrophylla

Some Hydrangea macrophylla varieties flower on old wood, and must carry their flower buds through the winter. Early or late freezes may damage flower buds and prevent them from blooming. For example, in Zone 5, bloom may only succeed 3 years out of 5, but the plant itself is hardy there. Fortunately for gardeners in cooler zones, recent introductions will likely bloom for them, as they flower on new growth as well as year-old stems.

Light/Watering: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. In the South, plants require afternoon shade. Moist soils that do not dry out are best; do not plant in hot, dry, exposed sites. Mulch to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Fertilize once in spring with a fertilizer designed to encourage blooms (such as 15-30-15). In many H. macrophylla varieties, flower color is determined by the pH of the soil; at low pH (acid soils) flowers will be blue and at higher pH, flowers will be pink. Generally, a pH below 5.0 results in deep, vivid blues and as the pH rises the flowers range from blue to lavender to mauve to a vivid deep pink at pH 7.0 (neutral). The pH determines the availability of aluminum in the soil; this element is more readily available in acid soils, and this availability results in the blue flower color. Since phosphorus ties up aluminum in soils, using a fertilizer low in this nutrient will aid in attaining blue flowers. If pink flowers are desired and your soil is acid, simply add lime to raise the pH and use a balanced fertilizer. Aluminum sulfate will lower pH if blue flowers are desired.

How to test your soil?

We recommend that you visit your local Cooperative Extension Service to find out about soil testing in your area. Follow this link for a directory of institutions involved in the Cooperative Extension program.

We also offer a Soil pH Meter, which allows you to test your soil and provides quick, accurate results.

Pests/Diseases: None serious. Occasionally powdery mildew will infect the foliage, especially in humid areas with poor air circulation. Treat with an appropriate fungicide if the problem is serious, and be sure to rake up and destroy all fallen foliage in the autumn.

Pruning: If your Hydrangea is growing too large, prune to the desired size by the end of August. In spring, only prune out dead wood once the new growth has emerged. This includes H. m. ‘Big Daddy,’ H. m. Citylineยฎ Mars, H. m. Citylineยฎ Rio, H. m. Citylineยฎ Venice, H. m. Color Fantasyยฎ, H. m. Double Delightsโ„ข Star Gazer, H. m. Everlastingโ„ข Amethyst, H. m. ‘Lady in Red,’ H. m. Light-O-Dayยฎ, H. m. ‘Nikko Blue,’ H. m. Pink Shiraโ„ข, and Parapluยฎ. These varieties bloom on old wood.

For mophead varieties blooming on both old and new wood, by the end of August cut back stems by about half if plants are growing too tall. Remove some of the oldest stems at ground level to thin out the shrub as needed. In spring, only prune out dead wood once the new growth has emerged. This includes H. m. ‘Blushing Bride,’ H. m. Double Delightsโ„ข Star Gazer, H. m. Endless Summerยฎ, H. m. Endless Summerยฎ Bloomstruckโ„ข, H. m. Everlastingยฎ Revolution, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Big Easy, Let’s Danceยฎ Blue Janglesยฎ, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Moonlight, Let’s Danceยฎ Raveโ„ข, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Starlight, H. m. Mysticalยฎ Opal, H. m. Nantucket Blueโ„ข, H. m. Pistachio, and H. m. Twist-n-Shoutโ„ข.

Reflowering: Regularly deadheading the spent blooms of H. macrophylla that bloom on both old and new wood helps encourage repeat bloom on the current year’s growth.

Transplanting: Young plants may be transplanted when dormant in early spring.

End of Season Care: Rake up and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew or other fungi. For gardeners in Zone 5, we recommend covering the stems with a 12โ€ layer of organic material such as straw or mulched leaves to help preserve the flower buds through the cold winter. In addition, you may wrap your Hydrangea with burlap to protect it from winds and cold temperatures.

Calendar of Care

Mid-Spring: Prune out any dead wood from all varieties. Check soil pH and adjust up or down if needed for desired flower color. Feed plants with a fertilizer high in phosphorus (such as 15-30-15) to encourage blooms. Complete any transplanting before leaves unfurl. Mulch plants after soil has warmed to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures. Watch for powdery mildew and treat as needed.

Fall: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew. In Zone 5, cover the stems with a 12โ€ layer of organic material such as straw or mulched leaves to help flower buds overwinter. You may also wrap your Hydrangea with burlap to protect it from winds and cold temperatures.

Should You Stake Your Hydrangeas?

Not all hydrangeas were created equal. While some can grow big, bushy blooms without ever flopping over, others require stakes in order to stand tall. “The best way to tell if your hydrangea is a candidate for staking is to look at it after a heavy rain,” says Amy Enfield, a horticulturist at ScottsMiracle-Gro. “Large flowers and heavy rain can make for floppy hydrangeas. So, if the flowers cause the stems to bend to the ground under the weight of the rain, it’s a good idea to stake your plants.”

purple and blue hydrangeas Credit: Getty / Manh Nguyen / EyeEm

Enfield says that in most cases, no harm will come to your plant if you don’t stake it. However, she does warn that there is a chance that thin flowering stems could be damaged when pulled down by the weight of heavy flowers. “It can also make the flowers dirty, which isn’t good if you like to cut them to enjoy indoors,” she adds. Not sure if you should stake your hydrangeas or not? We asked Enfield and Venelin Dimitrov, a product manager at Burpee, for their advice and here’s what they had to share.

To stake or not to stake?

According to our experts, certain types of hydrangeas are more likely to require staking. “Hydrangeas that produce large flowerheads, like the Annabelle hydrangea, appreciate some added support to keep their flower stems upright,” Enfield explains. “Staking helps keep the plants tidy, the branches from bending under the weight of the flowers, and keeps the flowers in full display in your garden.” Additionally, Dimitrov says stakes will help support larger flower varieties such as mop-head or lace-cap hydrangeas.

Use the correct tools.

In order to properly stake your hydrangeas, you’ll need the right materials. “When prepping to stake, you can utilize bamboo stakes and a soft tie, such as fabric tape or strips of old pantyhose (black is less conspicuous in the garden than nude),” Dimitrov says. If the hydrangea is growing near a fence, Enfield says you can use jute twine to gently tie it to the structure for support.

Know where to plant the stakes.

Enfield says that stakes can be placed anywhere the plant needs the added support. “Closer to the plant is better, but be careful not to damage the root system,” she says. “Stakes should go several inches (six to 12) into the ground so that the stems don’t pull them out under their weight.”

Establish a plan.

For a more natural look that eventually hides the stake, Enfield says to place the support in the center of the plant (the stake should be about a foot shorter than the tallest stem), and then use jute twine to pull each stem up individually towards the center. “Plant ties should be placed just under a leaf to keep it from sliding up the stem. Use a figure-eight loop that is twisted around the stake. The stem should be able to move so it can continue to grow.”

Don’t forget to stake blooms that will become bouquets.

Hydrangeas: Hydrangea ‘Next Generation Wedding Ring’

description for “Hydrangeas: Hydrangea ‘Next Generation Wedding Ring’ ”

‘Next Generation Wedding Ring’ Hydrangea is a real catch. Summer through Fall, this mophead hybrid produces bicolor blooms of either pink and white or blue and white. Simply gorgeous against the dark green foliage. Growth habit is compact, so gardeners will not have to spend as much time pruning this beauty. Great in a shade garden or container. Zones 5-9. Edited by M.Tate.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fanfare’ WEDDING RING

Culture

Best grown in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown in consistently moist soils. Soil pH affects the flower color of most cultivars except white (blue in highly acidic soils and lilac to pink in slightly acidic to alkaline soils). Add aluminum sulfate to the soil to make the flowers bluer or add lime to the soil to make the flowers pinker. Begin soil treatments well in advance of flowering, as in late autumn or early spring. Plants generally need little pruning. If needed, prune immediately after flowering by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in late winter/early spring. Best to mulch plants year-round with 3″ of shredded bark, peat or compost. Winter hardy to USDA Zone 6. For added protection, however, plants grown in USDA Zone 5 should be sited in sheltered locations and given additional winter protection, as needed, for the purposes of minimizing the risk of loss of significant numbers of flower buds or possible die-back to the ground in an extremely harsh winter. A burlap wrap of stems or circle of chicken wire filled with leaves or straw to 8-12″ are time-consuming and visually unattractive landscape options, but can be effective. Regardless of protective measures taken, most bigleaf hydrangeas simply will not bloom (or will bloom poorly) in some years because of a variety of winter occurrences beyond the control of the gardener (e.g. low temperatures, sudden wide temperature fluctuations, icy conditions, late frosts). Some newer cultivars have been selected that flower on both old and new wood. Their pruning and flowering can differ from that of the species.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Fanfare’ WEDDING RING reportedly has better winter hardiness (adapts well to USDA Zone 5 winters) than many of the H. macrophylla cultivars currently available in commerce.
