What does it mean to trust in the Lord LDS?
To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning (see Prov. 3:5–7). To produce fruit, your trust in the Lord must be more powerful and enduring than your confidence in your own personal feelings and experience.

It is so hard when sincere prayer about something we desire very much is not answered the way we want. It is especially difficult when the Lord answers no to that which is worthy and would give us great joy and happiness. Whether it be overcoming illness or loneliness, recovery of a wayward child, coping with a handicap, or seeking continuing life for a dear one who is slipping away, it seems so reasonable and so consistent with our happiness to have a favorable answer. It is hard to understand why our exercise of deep and sincere faith from an obedient life does not bring the desired result.
No one wants adversity. Trials, disappointments, sadness, and heartache come to us from two basically different sources. Those who transgress the laws of God will always have those challenges. The other reason for adversity is to accomplish the Lord’s own purposes in our life that we may receive the refinement that comes from testing. It is vitally important for each of us to identify from which of these two sources come our trials and challenges, for the corrective action is very different.
If you are suffering the disheartening effects of transgression, please recognize that the only path to permanent relief from sadness is sincere repentance with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Realize your full dependence upon the Lord and your need to align your life with His teachings. There is really no other way to get lasting healing and peace. Postponing humble repentance will delay or prevent your receiving relief. Admit to yourself your mistakes and seek help now. Your bishop is a friend with keys of authority to help you find peace of mind and contentment. The way will be opened for you to have strength to repent and be forgiven.
Now may I share some suggestions with you who face the second source of adversity, the testing that a wise Heavenly Father determines is needed even when you are living a worthy, righteous life and are obedient to His commandments.
Just when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously. When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience, they are evidence that the Lord feels you are prepared to grow more (see Prov. 3:11–12). He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching, and that generally entails discomfort and pain.
When you face adversity, you can be led to ask many questions. Some serve a useful purpose; others do not. To ask, Why does this have to happen to me? Why do I have to suffer this, now? What have I done to cause this? will lead you into blind alleys. It really does no good to ask questions that reflect opposition to the will of God. Rather ask, What am I to do? What am I to learn from this experience? What am I to change? Whom am I to help? How can I remember my many blessings in times of trial? Willing sacrifice of deeply held personal desires in favor of the will of God is very hard to do. Yet, when you pray with real conviction, “Please let me know Thy will” and “May Thy will be done,” you are in the strongest position to receive the maximum help from your loving Father.
This life is an experience in profound trust—trust in Jesus Christ, trust in His teachings, trust in our capacity as led by the Holy Spirit to obey those teachings for happiness now and for a purposeful, supremely happy eternal existence. To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning (see Prov. 3:5–7). To produce fruit, your trust in the Lord must be more powerful and enduring than your confidence in your own personal feelings and experience.
To exercise faith is to trust that the Lord knows what He is doing with you and that He can accomplish it for your eternal good even though you cannot understand how He can possibly do it. We are like infants in our understanding of eternal matters and their impact on us here in mortality. Yet at times we act as if we knew it all. When you pass through trials for His purposes, as you trust Him, exercise faith in Him, He will help you. That support will generally come step by step, a portion at a time. While you are passing through each phase, the pain and difficulty that comes from being enlarged will continue. If all matters were immediately resolved at your first petition, you could not grow. Your Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son love you perfectly. They would not require you to experience a moment more of difficulty than is absolutely needed for your personal benefit or for that of those you love.
As in all things, the Master is our perfect example. Who could have asked with more perfect faith, greater obedience, or more complete understanding than did He when He asked His Father in Gethsemane: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matt. 26:39). Later He pled twice again: “O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done” (Matt. 26:42; see also Matt. 26:44).
How grateful I am personally that our Savior taught we should conclude our most urgent, deeply felt prayers, when we ask for that which is of utmost importance to us, with “Thy will be done” (Matt. 26:42). Your willingness to accept the will of the Father will not change what in His wisdom He has chosen to do. However, it will certainly change the effect of those decisions on you personally. That evidence of the proper exercise of agency allows His decisions to produce far greater blessings in your life. I have found that because of our Father’s desire for us to grow, He may give us gentle, almost imperceptible promptings that, if we are willing to accept without complaint, He will enlarge to become a very clear indication of His will. This enlightenment comes because of our faith and our willingness to do what He asks even though we would desire something else.
Our Father in Heaven has invited you to express your needs, hopes, and desires unto Him. That should not be done in a spirit of negotiation, but rather as a willingness to obey His will no matter what direction that takes. His invitation, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (3 Ne. 27:29) does not assure that you will get what you want. It does guarantee that, if worthy, you will get what you need, as judged by a Father that loves you perfectly, who wants your eternal happiness even more than do you.
I testify that when the Lord closes one important door in your life, He shows His continuing love and compassion by opening many other compensating doors through your exercise of faith. He will place in your path packets of spiritual sunlight to brighten your way. They often come after the trial has been the greatest, as evidence of the compassion and love of an all-knowing Father. They point the way to greater happiness, more understanding, and strengthen your determination to accept and be obedient to His will.
It is a singularly marvelous blessing to have faith in the Savior and a testimony of His teachings. So few in the world have that brilliant light to guide them. The fulness of the restored gospel gives perspective, purpose, and understanding. It allows us to face what otherwise appear to be unjust, unfair, unreasonable challenges in life. Learn those helpful truths by pondering the Book of Mormon and other scriptures. Try to understand those teachings not only with your mind but also with your heart.
True enduring happiness with the accompanying strength, courage, and capacity to overcome the most challenging difficulties comes from a life centered in Jesus Christ. Obedience to His teachings provides a sure foundation upon which to build. That takes effort. There is no guarantee of overnight results, but there is absolute assurance that, in the Lord’s time, solutions will come, peace will prevail, and emptiness will be filled.
Recently a great leader, suffering from physical handicaps that come with advancing age, said, “I am glad I have what I have.” It is wisdom to open the windows of happiness by recognizing your abundant blessings.
Don’t let the workings of adversity totally absorb your life. Try to understand what you can. Act where you are able; then let the matter rest with the Lord for a period while you give to others in worthy ways before you take on appropriate concern again.
Please learn that as you wrestle with a challenge and feel sadness because of it, you can simultaneously have peace and rejoicing. Yes, pain, disappointment, frustration, and anguish can be temporary scenes played out on the stage of life. Behind them there can be a background of peace and the positive assurance that a loving Father will keep His promises. You can qualify for those promises by a determination to accept His will, by understanding the plan of happiness, by receiving all of the ordinances, and by keeping the covenants made to assure their fulfillment.
The Lord’s plan is to exalt you to live with Him and be greatly blessed. The rate at which you qualify is generally set by your capacity to mature, to grow, to love, and to give of yourself. He is preparing you to be a god. You cannot understand fully what that means, yet, He knows. As you trust Him, seek and follow His will, you will receive blessings that your finite mind cannot understand here on earth. Your Father in Heaven and His Holy Son know better than you what brings happiness. They have given you the plan of happiness. As you understand and follow it, happiness will be your blessing. As you willingly obey, receive, and honor the ordinances and covenants of that holy plan, you can have the greatest measure of satisfaction in this life. Yes, even times of overpowering happiness. You will prepare yourself for an eternity of glorious life with your loved ones who qualify for that kingdom.
I know the principles that we have discussed are true. They have been tested in the crucible of personal experience. To recognize the hand of the Lord in your life and to accept His will without complaint is a beginning. That decision does not immediately eliminate the struggles that will come for your growth. But I witness that it is the best way there is for you to find strength and understanding. It will free you from the dead ends of your own reasoning. It will allow your life to become a productive, meaningful experience, when otherwise you may not know how to go on (see D&C 24:8).
I testify that you have a Heavenly Father who loves you. I witness that the Savior gave His life for your happiness. I know Him. He understands your every need. I positively know that as you accept Their will without complaint, They will bless and sustain you. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Actively cast your cares on Him. Peter tells us in 1 Peter 5 to “cast our cares on Him, because He cares for you.” In this chapter, Peter emphasizes the necessity of humbling ourselves to God — to lowering ourselves and recognizing our need. To cast, meaning to “throw off” and “hurl” our anxieties, up to Him. We can trust and obey God is to cast your cares and anxieties on Him. When we acknowledge our worries and distrust and choose to surrender them to Jesus, it’s shows that we trust Him and His ability. Pray and ask God to humble your heart. However hard it may be, start humbly and ask God to help us release our control because only He is able. Everyday, ask Him to help you release your grip on your circumstances. You can trust Him with your cares, frustrations and worries. He is your Father — your closest friend — your Savior.
Plug into God’s Word everyday. Something that has helped me go from distrusting to trusting is spending quality time with God in His Word everyday. Like I always love to remind us, the more we read His promises, recount His faithfulness and get to know His heart through the Word, the more we will trust Him. The Bible is packed with mind blowing goodness. The main overarching theme of the Bible is who God is, what His good plan for the world is and Who He sent to save us! So the more we read the Bible, inevitably, the more we’ll learn about and fall in love with our Savior. Think about it: The more you know someone, the more you trust them. So let’s be diligent about reading His promises, recounting His faithfulness and studying His Word everyday. It’s not only what we’re commanded to do. It’s not only what helps us thrive in our faith and get closer to God. It also helps us trust Him more.
Walk in obedience to Him. Say I’m a perfect, professionally certified skydiver and I told you that you could jump out of the play by by yourself — without a buddy on your first jump? (Now this could be a better example but bear with me.) If you trusted me, one way you could demonstrate that trust is to jump out without a buddy strapped to you. Application: Because of who God is, because of His character, you can trust that simply walking in obedience to Him will bring you blessing, joy, sanctification and security. Even in the hardest of times. Ask God to renew your mind and help you switch the attention from worrying about the world and circumstances around you. Ask Him to help you wake up each day and give a simple “yes” to Him and what He commands you to do. Obey His Word and what He speaks to you and watch Him do the rest (Read John 15:10).
Find security and confidence in Him alone. There are a lot of things that make it feel like the foundation beneath us is crumbling. But like we mentioned before, that usually comes when we make the circumstances bigger than the Creator. Over and over in the gospels, Jesus sharply encourages people to confess their unbelief and turn away from it. A lot of times, when we’re distrusting, it reveals an unbelieving heart — one that doesn’t believe in God’s power — whether we realize it or not. But take heart. Our Father knows that His children will have moments of unbelief. But He graciously provides us a way to confess our unbelief and turn away from it. There’s no shame in Him — admit to Him your unbelief and ask Him to help you believe. Ask Him to help you find your security and confidence in Him alone. Let’s strive to show our allegiance to Christ alone. In a world that tempts us to put our security in material things like money, status or even governmental systems, may we be people who hold fast to Him and His truth alone.
Put Your Trust in the Lord
Become engaged in doing what you can in sharing the great message of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sister Ballard and I recently returned from an assignment to five countries in Europe. There we had the privilege of meeting with many of our missionaries, perhaps some of your sons and your daughters. Since President Thomas S. Monson’s announcement of the lowering of the age for our young men and our young women to serve, I have had the privilege of meeting with over 3,000 of them. The Light of Christ radiates in their faces, and they are eager to move the work forward—to find and teach, to baptize, to activate, and to strengthen and to build the kingdom of God. Meeting with them, one quickly comes to know, however, that they cannot do this work alone. Today I want to speak to all members of the Church, because there is an urgency for each one of us to be engaged in sharing the gospel.
As has been quoted many times, the Prophet Joseph Smith declared that “after all that has been said, the greatest and most important duty is to preach the Gospel” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 330).
In 1974 President Spencer W. Kimball said this: “Perhaps the greatest reason for missionary work is to give the world its chance to hear and accept the gospel. The scriptures are replete with commands and promises and calls and rewards for teaching the gospel. I use the word command deliberately for it seems to be an insistent directive from which we, singly and collectively, cannot escape” (“When the World Will Be Converted,” Ensign, Oct. 1974, 4).
In July of that same year, Sister Ballard and I left with our children to preside over the Canada Toronto Mission. The words of President Kimball were ringing in my ears, especially when he said: “My brethren, I wonder if we are doing all we can. Are we complacent in our approach to teaching all the world? We have been proselyting now 144 years. Are we prepared to lengthen our stride? To enlarge our vision?” (Ensign, Oct. 1974, 5).
He also asked us to quicken our pace, working together to build up the Church and kingdom of God.
This past June President Thomas S. Monson echoed exactly the same message to members of the Church. The President said: “Now is the time for members and missionaries to come together … [and] labor in the Lord’s vineyard to bring souls unto Him. He has prepared the means for us to share the gospel in a multitude of ways, and He will assist us in our labors if we will act in faith to fulfill His work” (“Faith in the Work of Salvation” [address given at a special broadcast, June 23, 2013]; lds.org/broadcasts).
It is good, brothers and sisters, to reflect on the teachings of the prophets from the time of Joseph Smith to today. They have encouraged and called upon the leadership and the members of the Church to be anxiously engaged in bringing the message of the Restoration of the gospel to all of our Heavenly Father’s children in all of the world.
My message this afternoon is that the Lord is hastening His work. In our day this can be done only when every member of the Church reaches out with love to share the truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to work together in partnership with our 80,000 missionaries now serving. Information about this great work, especially the assignments for the stake and ward council leaders, is clearly outlined on the LDS.org website entitled “Hastening the Work of Salvation.”
We know from our research that most active members of the Church want the blessings of the gospel to be part of the lives of others whom they love, even those whom they have never met. But we also know that many members hesitate to do missionary work and share the gospel for two basic reasons.
The first one is fear. Many members do not even pray for opportunities to share the gospel, fearing that they might receive divine promptings to do something they think they are not capable of doing.
The second reason is misunderstanding of what missionary work is.
We know that when someone gets up to give a talk in sacrament meeting and says, “Today I’ll be talking about missionary work,” or perhaps even when Elder Ballard gets up in general conference and says the same thing, some of you listening may think, “Oh no, not again; we have heard this before.”
Now, we know that no one likes feeling guilty. Perhaps you feel you may be asked to do unrealistic things in your relationships with friends or neighbors. With the help of the Lord, let me remove any fear you or any of our full-time missionaries may have in sharing the gospel with others.
Make the decision to do what Jesus Christ has asked us to do. The Savior has said:
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
“For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
“Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
“If ye … know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:7–11).
Brothers and sisters, fear will be replaced with faith and confidence when members and the full-time missionaries kneel in prayer and ask the Lord to bless them with missionary opportunities. Then, we must demonstrate our faith and watch for opportunities to introduce the gospel of Jesus Christ to our Heavenly Father’s children, and surely those opportunities will come. These opportunities will never require a forced or a contrived response. They will flow as a natural result of our love for our brothers and sisters. Just be positive, and those whom you speak with will feel your love. They will never forget that feeling, though the timing may not be right for them to embrace the gospel. That too may change in the future when their circumstances change.
It is impossible for us to fail when we do our best when we are on the Lord’s errand. While the outcome is a result of the exercise of one’s agency, sharing the gospel is our responsibility.
Trust the Lord. He is the Good Shepherd. He knows His sheep, and His sheep know His voice; and today the voice of the Good Shepherd is your voice and my voice. And if we are not engaged, many who would hear the message of the Restoration will be passed by. Simply stated, it’s a matter of faith and action on our part. The principles are pretty simple—pray, personally and in your family, for missionary opportunities. You don’t have to be an outgoing person or an eloquent, persuasive teacher. If you have an abiding love and hope within you, the Lord has promised if you “lift up your voices unto this people [and] speak the thoughts that [He] shall put into your hearts, … you shall not be confounded before men;
“[And] it shall be given you … in the very moment, what ye shall say” (D&C 100:5–6).
Preach My Gospel reminds all of us that “nothing happens in missionary work until [we] find someone to teach. Talk with as many people as you can each day. It is natural to be somewhat apprehensive about talking to people, but you can pray for the faith and strength to be more bold in opening your mouth to proclaim the restored gospel” ([2004], 156–57). You full-time missionaries, if you want to teach more, you must talk to more people every day. This has always been what the Lord has sent missionaries forth to do.
The Lord knows us. He knows we have our challenges. I realize that some of you may feel heavy laden, but I pray that none of you would ever feel that reaching out in normal, pleasant ways to share the gospel would ever be a burden. Rather, it is a privilege! There is no greater joy in life than being anxiously engaged in the service of the Lord.
The key is that you be inspired of God, that you ask Him for direction and then go and do as the Spirit prompts you. When members view the work of salvation as their responsibility alone, it can be intimidating. When they view it as an invitation to follow the Lord in bringing souls unto Him to be taught by the full-time elders and sisters, it is inspiring, invigorating, and uplifting.
We are not asking everyone to do everything. We are simply asking all members to pray, knowing that if every member, young and old, will reach out to just “one” between now and Christmas, millions will feel the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. And what a wonderful gift to the Savior.
Six weeks ago I received a letter from a very successful member missionary family, the Munns family of Florida. They wrote:
“Dear Elder Ballard, 30 minutes after the worldwide broadcast on hastening the work of salvation, we held our family missionary council. We were thrilled to find that our teenage grandchildren wanted to be included. We’re happy to report that since our council meeting, we have expanded our family teaching pool by 200 percent.
“We have had grandchildren bring friends to church, have enjoyed sacrament meetings with some of our less-active friends, and have had some of our new contacts commit to take the missionary discussions. One of our less-active sisters has not only returned to church but has brought new investigators with her.
“No one has turned down the invitation to take the missionary discussions. What an exciting time to be a member of this Church” (personal letter, Aug. 15, 2013).
Heed the promptings of the Spirit. Supplicate the Lord in mighty prayer. Become engaged in doing what you can in sharing the great message of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I quote from another successful member missionary, Clayton Christensen: “Every time you take someone figuratively by the hand and introduce him or her to Jesus Christ, you will feel how deeply our Savior loves you and loves the person whose hand is in yours” (The Power of Everyday Missionaries: The What and How of Sharing the Gospel [2013], 1).
God bless you, brothers and sisters, to find the great joy that comes from experiencing miracles through your faith. As we are taught in Moroni chapter 7:
“Christ hath said: If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me. …
“… For it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain” (Moroni 7:33, 37).
From my own experience I can testify to you that the Lord will hear your prayers and you will have many opportunities now and for years to come to introduce the gospel of Jesus Christ to Heavenly Father’s precious children. President Monson, we have listened. We will all seek to find the one. I pray that all of us may experience the great joy that comes from missionary service, in the sacred name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is led by the First Presidency (a president and two counselors) and the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. Lean Not Unto Thine Own Understanding
About 2 ½ years ago my Bishop at the time, Kevin Schlag, called me in to his office to let me know that I was going to be released from my calling as the Ward Relief Society president. Feeling that this would give me more time on my hands I prayed for guidance and to know what I should do with my life now. We were empty nesters and I needed to keep myself busy. I had had thoughts of pursuing a higher education. (Yes at my late age I could still go on for more). Well my answer came a few weeks later, but it was not what I expected. Brother Keith Lane, a stake high councilman, wanted to talk to me and called me to be our ward seminary teacher. I have had two dreads in my life and this was one of them. My other dread was speaking in Devotional and as you can see I couldn’t get out of that either. I had no problem being called to any other position in the ward but this was the one calling that I did not want. I wanted so badly to say no but the words that came out of my mouth were ‘yes I will do it’. All I could think about was how am I going to do this calling. My husband, who is a wonderful gospel teacher, wouldn’t be able to help me because he worked at Kaimuki High school and he left each morning at 5:00am. In my own understanding, I would be left to do this on my own. At least I didn’t have to start until after the Christmas break so I had a little time to prepare.
Elder Richard G. Scott said, “This life is an experience in profound trust – trust in Jesus Christ, trust in his teachings, trust in our capacity as led by the Holy Spirit to obey those teachings for happiness now and for a purposeful, supremely happy eternal existence. To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning. To produce fruit, your trust in the Lord must be more powerful and enduring than your confidence in your own personal feelings and experience.” 1
I look back now on this calling and I can see now what a blessing it has been in my life.
The Lord has truly helped me to see the way I should teach my students, all 21 of them. My fellow seminary teachers who are here today know what I am saying. My prayers were answered, but not in the way that I understood it would. This experience has helped me to develop my trust and faith in the Lord. I know that after I read through the scripture passage for the day, I can ponder and think about what I have to teach and then pray to Heavenly Father for direction on how and what he wants me to teach so that my class will understand the principles that are going to be taught that day the way the Lord wants it to be done. I have woken up many nights with a clear vision on how I should present the lesson. That really helps when you only have a day to ponder and prepare. I even got help in choosing what type of scripture mastery activity we could do. As I turned to the Lord and exercised my faith in Him, I began to let Him help and guide me.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reads, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” 2
This year, our course of study has been the Old Testament. I have received an increased understanding of the temple endowment and other ordinances performed in the temple as we have studied the Old testament books. I have truly been blessed and had I leaned on my own understanding and not trusted in the Lord I would not have had this wonderful experience.
In 2 Kings Chapter 5 we read of Naaman who was a mighty man but he was a leper. He tried many ways to be healed of his sickness, but nothing worked. A young Israelite maid, who waited on his wife, told her mistress that there was a prophet who she knew could heal him. Naaman went to visit the prophet Elisha and fully expected Elisha to come out waving his hand and healing him of his infirmity but he didn’t. In fact, Elisha did not come at all but he sent his messenger to tell him that all he had to do was “wash in the Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.” 3 Naaman’s reply was, “Are not the Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them and be clean?…” 4 As I read this, I thought of the dirty lagoon water at the Polynesian Cultural Center and wonder how many of us would wash in that water seven times. In my younger years of dancing, I remember being in that water and once was enough for me. But here is Naaman having to do it seven times. How could washing in dirty water make him clean? In our understanding that does not seem possible. Naaman was ready to walk away from it all however, his servant, who probably had more faith in God than he, reminded him that “if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldst thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?” 5 As we know he then goes and washes in the Jordan and after the seventh time his flesh was clean. Lean not unto thine own understanding.
Elder Scott tells us that “To exercise faith is to trust that the Lord knows what he is doing with you and that he can accomplish it for your eternal good even though you cannot understand how He can possibly do it. We are like infants in our understanding of eternal matters and their impact on us here in mortality. Yet at times, we act as if we know it all. When you pass through trials for His purposes, as you trust Him, exercise faith in Him, He will help you.” 6
Our Heavenly Father knows us and loves us. He will not forget us. Some years ago my husband was the Athletic director at Kahuku High school and was put on paid leave due to an ineligible player on the Football team and so while they were investigating he had to stay off work. My children and I were very upset that he had to be the one to be punished and so we were very verbal to my husband telling him what he should do to get back at the school but in all this my husband continued to have faith in the Lord and told us that the Lord would take care. Our understanding was that we needed to do something to get Dad back to his job. During this time of being off the job, the Lord blessed my husband. The temple was reopening, after the extensive renovation and he was able to work as a temple worker and learn from Bro Ben Nihipali the correct way of running a shift, setting up for large sessions and just making it comfortable for the patrons who would come. He would not have been able to do this if he had still been working as AD because it is a very time consuming job.
For almost 1 ½ years that he was on leave, my husband was able to enjoy being in the temple and serving others. He did not waiver in his faith and knew the Lord would help him through this trial. He would always say the Lord will provide. We decided that he should just quit his job, since they were taking so long and not doing anything. My husband still wanted to work in the temple and we felt that if he went back to his AD job then he would have to give up being a temple worker. Besides he was getting older. So he put in his papers to return to teach with the DOE. We had decided that he should start subbing while we waited for a position to open up for him. To do this, he was going to go to the West side because they always have subbing jobs over there and this would help us maintain a steady income. His parents lived down that side so he was going to stay there during the week and return home on Fridays. In our understanding, he was going so he could continue to support our family. But while he was there, he was able to spend more time with his mother whom he had had a strained relationship with and also bond with a brother who had been adopted out to his father’s friend. This brother had come over to get some genealogy from his mother and continued to come over while my husband was there so they could bond as brothers do. They were able to have long gospel discussions as he wasn’t a member, although his wife was. My husband was able to baptize his brother’s son and we continued to work on him and be an example to him. As we looked back on this time we knew that although we had our plan, the Lord had something else in mind. We were so grateful to the Lord for giving my husband this time with his family because his mother passed away later that year and it made this time even more precious. Lean not unto thine own understanding.
When my husband started getting sick, he would never question the Lord as to why he could not get better and why this had to happen to him. He would never complain about his pain or discomfort but always tell me how grateful he was for his many blessings. One of those blessings was the opportunity to teach a few classes here at BYUH. I would be the one to complain and perhaps murmur. I petitioned to the Lord that if I served others more and if I did all that He asked of me and more, would He bless my husband and make him well again. I tried all that I could, working for others in the temple, serving those around me and always trying to help those in need. I even changed the attitude I had as I took care of my husband. I no longer looked at it as a burden or sacrifice but as though I was serving the Lord. The Lord did bless my husband but not in the way that I imagined.
The Lord decided it was time to take him to the other side. I know now that the Lord did hear my pleads and did answer my prayers but not in the way that I understood. In this trial I know that the Lord was with us. My faith and trust in the Lord had helped to strengthen me and I gained a stronger testimony of the Atonement in my life. It took on a new meaning to me as I had this experience. By trusting in the Lord I came to know that through the Atonement I could find peace and comfort. I know that the Lord will continue to bless me as I do what he wants me to do.
In Hel 5:12 it reads, “And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fail.” 7
By having faith and trusting in the Lord daily we can be prepared for those times when big trials come. We can prepare and know that because of our experience that the Lord will be there for us. He knows our needs. He will not leave us alone. We just need to call on him, in faith and he will answer our prayers.
All of us, for some reason, have come to BYUH. We are not here by chance but there is a reason. Before graduation, I usually send out an email to the prospective graduates inviting them to share something unique about themselves. Usually the Commencement speakers want to know the graduates and perhaps what has brought them here to BYUH. Usually I get answers like, I have siblings who graduated from this school or I have this many kids and I am graduating, or my husband and I are graduating together. Occasionally I will get a reply that is so uplifting and so touching that it brings me to tears. One student told me that although his family were not members, his father had suggested that he come to BYUH. He had been online and came across our website and was impressed by what we offered. In his understanding he was coming to go to school and get an education but he said this experience here changed his life. Unlike many of you who have found your spouse here, he left single, but he left as a member of the church. He shared how the faculty and students and friends that he met here had helped him have an experience that he could not have had elsewhere. He left not only with a degree but with a testimony of the gospel and for that he was grateful. He knows that because he showed faith and came to BYUH that he was blessed.
When he came to the office one day, just after this, I recognized his name and talked to him more about his experience. He told me he still didn’t quite understand how or what made his father go online to check out schools, but it was a blessing in his life. Many of us do not understand why we have come here but if we trust in the Lord, keep his commandments and be obedient, the Lord will be able to guide us and direct us to do what he wants us to do.
I have been on a few road trips these past few months, visiting with my children in the mainland and visiting places that we were not too sure of. Something common in each of these trips has been the use of a little black box. The GPS. Some of you use your phones, we use the GPS, but in each case you put in your current location, then your desired address and off you go. A lot has changed since the old days when we used to use a road map. For those of you who are too young to know what a road map is….it is a piece of paper with all the highways, freeways, byways, streets and avenues listed on it. As a traveler, you would work out your route or root as you say in America, drawing lines all over this map deciding the best way to travel. A prayer for guidance and safety in your travels, and a plea that you would get to your destination would be offered and then you would go for it. Using the map you would sometimes miss the exit or take a wrong turn. An argument between driver and navigator would usually take place and then you are back on the road again. With the GPS, addresses are simply put in the device and off you go, with a little voice reminding you to …’in .2 miles take the exit on the right and stay left.” The GPS would get you to your destination. Sometimes, it will try to take you on a side route which means you go through toll roads where you need to pay to use the roads. (Those of you from California know what I am talking about). It may help you to get through with the least amount of traffic and will get you where you want to go with this toll that you have to pay. Sometimes you turn off your GPS because towards the end, you see your destination in the distance and say ‘I got it. We’re good.’ But no, perhaps you turn one street too soon and have to go back. You thought you have it but really you don’t.
I relate this experience to you because I was beginning to realize that we easily put all our trust in this GPS or these devices and we forget to trust in the Lord. We faithfully follow the GPS path, but we are not so fast in following the path that our Heavenly Father has prepared for us. When we have to pay the toll or go through trials, we hesitate and question why this or that but how many of us are willing and eager to follow the path he has given us. I know, that as we follow the path and go through these trials our Heavenly Father will be there to help us and guide us through. Let him be our GPS and allow the still small voice of the spirit guide us on our way. Lean not unto thine own understanding and He will direct our path. Always consult Him in all things and don’t turn Him off.
When Joshua led the Israelites to attack Jericho, the Lord gave him specific instructions. They were told to circle the city, once each day for six days but be quiet, don’t make any noise until Joshua told them to. On the seventh day, after walking around the city seven times and after the priests had blown their horns, the people were allowed to shout: for the Lord hath given them the city. The Israelites followed the Lord’s command with exactness and were able to take the city of Jericho. I wonder how many of us would question how it would have been possible to take the city by only doing these things. Perhaps the people did not understand the reason why the Lord wanted them to do this but they were willing to follow exactly what the Lord asked and they were able to witness the walls of Jericho fall. If only we could have this faith.
President James E. Faust tells a wonderful story in his message, The Shield of Faith, from the Liahona magazine July 2000. He tells of a heroic pioneer woman from Haun’s Mill, Amanda Smith and how she was able to do something beyond her abilities and the scientific knowledge of her time. It was in 1838 after the terrible attack on the mill, when she found her eldest son carrying her youngest son Alma and she believed that he was dead. He was not dead but had had his entire hipbone shot away. When she examined the wound she said it was a ghastly sight and she had no idea what to do so she prayed to Heavenly Father asking what she should do. These are her words ‘Oh my Heavenly Father; what shall I do? Thou seest my poor wounded boy and knowest my inexperience. Oh, Heavenly Father, direct me what to do! She said that she was directed by a voice telling her what to do. She was instructed to use the ashes of their smoldering fire and make a lye and put the cloth saturates with it right into the wound. She continued to saturate the cloth and put it into the hole and each time mashed flesh and splinters of bone came away with the cloth and the wound became as white as Chicken’s flesh. She then prayed again for direction and as she did she was instructed, as though a physician had been standing by her. This time she was told to make a poultice from a nearby slippery-elm tree and fill the wound with it. She dressed the wound as directed and added balsam to help soothe the pain. She asked her son if he believed that the Lord could make him a new hip. He asked her if she believed and she said yes because the Lord had shown her in a vision. So her son laid on his bed, flat on his face for five weeks until he was entirely healed, a flexible gristle having grown in place of the missing joint and socket. He was able to continue in his life and was never crippled, all because of the faith of his mother. 8
Elder Charles W. Penrose said, “Some people will not believe anything they cannot grasp with their human reason or cannot see with their natural eyes. But blessed is the man of faith, blessed is the woman of faith! For by faith they can see into things that cannot be discerned by the natural eyes. They can reach out to the regions of immortality, grasp eternal realities and lay hold upon things of God.”9
May we trust in God and lean not unto our own understanding. But exercise our faith and allow the Lord
to direct our path. In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.
