Hayoung Choi, eine junge Cellistin südkoreanischer Abstammung, wurde 1998 in Bielefeld geboren. Sie wurde am Korean National Institute for the Gifted in Arts in Korea von Hyong Won Chang und Myung-Wha Chung unterrichtet und studierte an der Purcell School of Music in Hertfordshire (England) bei Alexander Boyarsky.

Hayoung Choi ist als Nachwuchskünstlerin bei den großen südkoreanischen Orchestern bereits stark gefragt, konzertierte jedoch auch in Europa mit der Camerata Salzburg und spielte ein Rezital beim St. Moritz Festival 2011.

In Südkorea wurde Hayoung Choi mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen, wie den ersten Preisen der Strad Music Competition und der Yewon Music Competition 2006, geehrt. Jedoch konnte sie auch bei internationalen Wettbewerben die Juroren überzeugen: 2009 erhielt sie erste Preise beim Internationalen Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer-Wettbewerb für junge Cellisten und 2011 konnte sie auch beim Internationalen Johannes Brahms-Wettbewerb den ersten Preis für sich gewinnen. Hinzu kam 2010 das Scholarship for a Young Musician of Promise, das ihr bei den Uttwil Meisterkursen in der Schweiz zugesprochen wurde. 2018 war sie Preisträgerin des Internationalen Krzysztof Penderecki Cello Wettbewerbs in Krakau.

In den Jahren 2009, 2015, 2017 und 2019 wirkte Hayoung Choi am Kronberg Academy Festival mit, wo sie 2017 den Leyda Ungerer Preis verliehen bekam. 2008, 2014 und 2016 nahm sie an den Cello Meisterkursen der Kronberg Academy teil, wo sie 2008 den Landgraf von Hessen-Preis verliehen bekam. She is also the youngest winner of the “International Johannes Brahms Competition”, 1st prizewinner at the “International Justus Dotzauer Competition for Young Cellists”, at the “International Antonio Janigro Competition” as well as at the “Strad Music Competition” and the “Yewon Music Competition” in Korea.

As a young artist, Hayoung is not only in great demand with the major South Korean orchestras, but she now also gives concerts in Europe. The highlights of her young solo career include performances with the Camerata Salzburg, at the St. Moritz Festival and at the annual festival of the Kronberg Academy Chamber Music Connects the World, where she performed as a soloist together with the Kremerata Baltica. Other orchestras with which Hayoung has performed include the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, the Barcelona Chamber Orchestra, the London Trinity Labans Conservatoire Orchestra, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sungnam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra.
