Take my advice — don’t buy a window vacuum cleaner
We all want to make life easier, especially when it comes to cleaning. That’s why when window vacuum cleaners first came to market, we welcomed the idea with open arms. If these small, electric squeegees could make cleaning the windows any easier, then they would be an essential purchase for avid cleaners everywhere. But, are window vacuum cleaners really all that useful and convenient? Here, we take a look at their pros and cons, and why ultimately they’re not worth your time.
What are window vacuum cleaners?
Window vacuum cleaners are a relatively new concept — Kärcher only launched their first model in the US in 2010. These handheld appliances are designed to vacuum up any condensation or cleaning solution as you squeegee a window or worktop. Most are cordless with rechargeable batteries and a removable tank is attached to the body to collect the excess water. The advantage of using one is that it will clean and dry your window at the same time, supposedly leaving a streak-free finish.
Why am I not a fan of window vacuum cleaners?
When I first unboxed a window vacuum for testing, I had high hope for its performance. I live in a hard water area, so I need to wipe out my shower with a manual squeegee daily, followed by towel-drying any remnants. However, unfortunately, the window vacuum sucked, and not in a good way.
When I started to clean my shower glass, I immediately realized I needed to severely slow down. With a squeegee I could quickly swipe back and forth, but with a window vacuum, I had to gradually drag it down the glass, which I soon lost my patience with. When I reached the bottom and moved to the top of the next section, the seal on the window vacuum started to drip over the area I had just dried, which was frustrating.
Looking back over my work, I was not happy with the finish at all. The window vacuum had picked up all of the water, but it had also left a dull, streaky finish which would need buffing. So I had to grab a towel to both dry the seal between swipes and buff where I’d cleaned.
On top of this, the weight of the window vacuum soon started to strain my arm, so I had switch hands repeatedly. I finally finished, but the job took much longer than it usually would and I felt more tired on top of it.
Lastly, I’m not sure why, but I had hoped that being a window vacuum cleaner, it would be able to contribute to cleaning the windows. Sadly this wasn’t the case either. When I vacuumed a dirty, wet window, it simply smeared the dirt across it and blocked the seal. So in the end, all it was really good for was drying, but I wasn’t even happy with its performance there.
If you’re still not convinced, here are some pros and cons of window vacuum cleaners.
Window vacuum cleaner: Pros
It saves you drying.
Using a window vacuum cleaner does save you from drying by hand as you would after using a squeegee — particularly useful when you’re wiping out the shower. A squeegee leaves lots of drips which you have to go back over with a towel.

If you use paper towels to buff and dry the windows or mirrors, then a window vacuum cleaner will save those too, making it the more environmentally friendly option. This will also work out cheaper as you save the paper towels.

A good window vacuum cleaner can be effective at collecting dust and debris from surfaces. Bear in mind the surfaces will still need to be wet for this to work, as these aren’t like standard vacuum cleaners.

Window vacuum cleaner: Cons
They are much bulkier in size and heavier than a squeegee.
Because of this, they can strain your arm quickly and aren’t ideal for using over long periods of time. Their shape also means they can’t get into as small a crevice as manual squeegees can.

You can’t swipe with a window vacuum cleaner as fast as you would use a squeegee. You need to move very slowly so it has a chance to vacuum up the water droplets.

If the seal is not pressed flush against the glass or a small piece of debris blocks it, expect streaks. I’ve had this problem before and ended up buffing or cleaning the mirror again using the traditional method.

If you’re vacuuming up a spill, the tank can fill much more quickly than you expect. Most only hold about 150ml, so be prepared to keep emptying it if you’re picking up a large spill.

A window vacuum cleaner is essentially a squeegee combined with a vacuum. So, if you’ve got a dirty window and you spray some water or cleaning solution onto it, then use the window vacuum, it won’t work. You need to first clean the window before you can vacuum it dry.

Most window vacuum batteries will last around 30 minutes, which isn’t enough time if you’ve got a lot of windows to cover. If this is the case, look for ones which last for an hour or more to save yourself from constantly recharging.

While window vacuum cleaners boast that they don’t drip, some still do in my experience, albeit not as much as a squeegee. Unless you keep drying the seal after each strip, this inevitably happens, so you still need to keep a towel on standby.

As this drying method uses energy, it’s less environmentally friendly vs using a bath towel. While the towel will need to be machine-washed, you can use it several times beforehand and hang to dry between uses.

Should you buy a window vacuum cleaner?
While my personal experience was less than ideal, some still vouch for window vacuum cleaners. Personally, I don’t think they add much to the convenience of drying your windows, but there’s certainly room for improvement in their design. Until then, I’m sticking with my squeegee.

Best window vac: At a glance
How to choose the best window vac for you
What specifications should I pay attention to?
You’ll notice a surprising range of features and extras when shopping around for a window vac, but there are only four factors that really matter:
1. Cleaning efficiency: It doesn’t matter how long a window vac’s battery can last if it’s not cleaning your windows. Suction should be strong enough to remove dust, dirt and water quickly and evenly, all the way along the suction nozzle, so it can clean right to the edge of your window. One model, the Vileda WindowMatic, has a turbo-power ‘Max’ setting for extra suction when needed. This runs down the battery faster, but it’s a clever option that we’d like to see on more models.
2. Leak-proof suction: Window vacs suck wastewater into their tanks, rather than dry dirt like a standard vacuum cleaner. That can get messy, especially if you’re working with odd-shaped windows in hard-to-reach places. You don’t want gunky water running down into your armpit. So, we looked for models with good leak-proofing, and tanks that were easy to empty on the go.
3. Battery runtime (and charge time): Windows vacs only run for about half an hour per charge. That may sound miserly but it’s usually long enough to clean your car or blitz condensation on a chilly morning. However, to avoid having to give up halfway through more extensive cleaning missions, check that you can recharge the battery quickly and conveniently. Most models take around three hours for a full recharge.
4. Weight and capacity: A kilo may not feel like much at first, but after half an hour of holding the unit at arm’s length it’ll start to hurt – especially when it fills up with 300ml or so of dirty water. The bigger the tank, the more cleaning you can do without having to stop and empty it, but the heavier it will get. So, tank size is less important than leak-proofing and easy emptying.
What extra features and accessories are worth having?
Interchangeable suction heads: Most window vacs come with a 280mm suction head as standard, but many include an additional smaller head for fiddly jobs such as leaded windows and front door panels. Pivoting suction heads can also help to get into awkward spots.
Extra chargers and batteries: All our featured window vacs come with a standard DC mains plug and cable. Some models add convenient backup options such as removable batteries (and the option to buy a spare), and USB and in-car chargers.
LED charge indicator: Useful for revealing how much longer the battery will last before it needs a recharge.
Extendable pole: A few models on our list come with, or are compatible with, telescopic or multi-section poles to help you reach high windows and skylights without wobbling up a ladder. On the downside, a pole can make the vac hard to control, especially if it’s heavy.
Cleaning extras: Many window vacs come with cleaning bottles, microfibre pads and even their own branded cleaning spray. While useful, these extras are unlikely to perform any better than the stuff you already have in your cleaning cupboard.

The best window vacs to buy
1. Karcher Window Vac WV5: The best all-round window vacuum cleaner
Price: £75 | Buy now from Argos
The Karcher WV5 is about as pricey as window vacs get. It’s still cheaper than paying a human window cleaner, though, and its power, features and efficiency are the best you’ll find in a window vac designed for home users.
Among its many included accessories are a smaller 170mm suction head for hard-to-reach areas and a microfibre attachment to spread detergent on your windows. There’s a built-in LED battery indicator and you can buy additional batteries so that you’ve always got a fully charged one ready to go.
None of that would matter if the Karcher didn’t clean windows brilliantly – and that’s where it really excels. Suction is strong and efficient right across the nozzle, so you can clean and dry into the silicone seal around your windows. The finish is about as streak-free as a window vac can achieve, although you may want to give your glass a final buff with a dry kitchen towel.
Key specs – Weight: 1.1kg; Battery runtime: 35mins; Cleaning area: 105m² per charge; Accessories included: Additional small suction nozzle, microfibre cleaning head, extra spray bottle (with 20ml branded detergent), charger
2. Vileda WindoMatic Power Window Vacuum: The best lightweight window vac
Price: £71 | Buy now from Amazon
Vileda’s minimalist window vac runs the Karcher a close second in our rundown. It’s about half the weight of the Karcher (until the large 300ml wastewater tank fills up, anyway) and is the only vac in our list to have an additional turbo power level.
Switch to ‘Max’ mode to boost the WindowMatic’s power by 50% (and drain the battery faster, of course). It’s a real help when cleaning tenaciously grubby surfaces, and generally speeds up the process. The Vileda also has a flexible neck, ideal for hard-to-reach places, and the tank is easy to remove for emptying and sticking in the dishwasher.
Key specs – Weight: 640g; Battery runtime: 40mins; Cleaning area: 120m² per charge; Accessories included: Charger
3. Bosch GlassVAC Cordless Window Vac: The best window vac with USB charging port
Price: £61 | Buy now from Amazon
If you want your window vac to look like a serious power tool, this Bosch is the one for you. It feels wonderfully robust and offers the same wiper technology used by the car industry to achieve a streak-free finish on windscreens. We also love that you can charge it via USB using the included micro-USB charger – an increasingly convenient option for drivers. Like the Karcher, the Bosch has a battery indicator to let you know when it’s running low.
Suction power is excellent and you get oodles of extras in the box, including a smaller head and microfibre attachment. However, what pushes the Bosch behind the Karcher and Vileda in our list is its failure, reported by some users, to clean quite as well to the very edges of your windows.
Key specs – Weight: 700g; Battery runtime: 30mins; Cleaning area: 105m² per charge; Accessories included: Additional small suction nozzle, microfibre cleaning head, extra spray bottle, USB charger
4. Leifheit Window Vacuum Cleaner: The best window vac to remove condensation from skylights and conservatories
Price: £43 | Buy now from Leifheit
Leifheit’s lightweight model is the Spider-Man of window vacs, able to operate efficiently at all angles. So if you’re struggling to clean and dry your skylights, conservatory roof and weirdly positioned mirrors without ending up covered in gunk, this leak-free model is the vac for you. Convenient design touches include a stopper that lets you drain the tank without needing to remove it (although you can remove it for cleaning). It’s a great little vac, although its suction power could be stronger at the edges.
Key specs – Weight: 739g; Battery runtime: 45mins; Cleaning area: Not given; Accessories included: Charger (telescopic handle available separately)
Buy now from Leifheit
5. Monzana Window Vacuum Cleaner: The best extendable window vac
Price: £34 | Buy now from Amazon
Clean entire walls of tiles with ease using this extendable window vac. The unit itself is light enough to remain manageable even when the telescopic pole is fully extended, although a few users have experienced water leaking out both ends of the silicone nozzle blade.
Key specs – Weight: 680g; Battery runtime: 30mins; Cleaning area: ‘Up to 30 windows’ per charge; Accessories included: Telescopic extension pole, microfibre cloths, spray bottle, charger
6. Beldray Window Vacuum Cleaner: The best budget window vac
Price: £23 | Buy now from Wilko
Coming in under £30, Beldray’s handheld window vac is considerably cheaper than the other models on our list, and also somewhat less powerful. It can only be used in a vertical position, so while it does a good job of cleaning and drying windows, mirrors and shower screens, it won’t help you with spills on worktops or grimy skylights.
But it’s cheap and lightweight (partly down to the small 60ml tank, which needs emptying rather frequently), so it’s a good spare vac to keep handy for quickly dealing with condensation or whizzing over the car windows.
Key specs – Weight: 921g; Battery runtime: 30mins; Cleaning area: Not given; Accessories included: Charger

So what do you need to look out for when you’re buying your window vacuum cleaner? First, the run time. While a window vacuum cleaner with an average 35 minute charge time may be perfectly fine for whipping your way around a bungalow in one go, or indeed cleaning your car windows, those with a three-storey townhouse will need to accept that multiple charges will be required. Why not leave it to recharge while you do the floors with the best vacuum cleaner or best cordless vacuum cleaner?
Second, you’ll need to consider the shape of the head – has it been optimised to get into the tightest grooves of the window frame or is an additional head required to get into these nooks and crannies? Finally, the price. Think about how often you’re going to use your window vacuum cleaner and whether it’s worth splashing the cash for one that won’t cop out on you halfway through a cleaning mission.
We think the two best window vacs currently on the market are the Kärcher WV 6 Premium and WV 5 Plus N, so it’s fair to say Karcher dominates this market, as it does the best pressure washers. Read on for our full rundown.

The WV 6 comes with a light 800g vacuum unit replete with 150ml dirty water container, two silicone suction heads (one 28cm in width, the other 17cm), a squirty bottle for the cleaning solution, a 20ml sachet of window cleaning concentrate and a small plastic scraper for hard-to-remove substances like bird poo. The solution bottle is also equipped with an integrated holder for the two supplied microfibre cloths.
To use, simply squirt the solution from a foot away (you can use any cleaning brand) and use the attached microfibre mop to spread it around. Then reach for the vacuum unit, press the button and slowly draw it downwards or across the glass. It’s that simple. Amazingly, there are no streaks and the silicone vacuum heads suck up all remnants of solution right to the very edge, even at the bottom of a down stroke where the head meets the window frame.
The WV 6’s battery last longer than other models in the range – up to 100 minutes – while its small LCD screen provides the user with a minute-by-minute countdown of remaining battery juice available.
In the arena of window vacs, Kärcher reigns supreme and this model is the company’s finest endeavour yet.

2. Kärcher WV 5 Plus N The best mid-priced window vacuum cleaner Specifications Weight: 0.7kg Run time: 35 minutes Comes with: two suction nozzles, cleaning spray and microfibre cleaning head Reasons to buy + Cleans windows and shower screens + Cleans up spillages and condensation Reasons to avoid – Long charge time
They say you get what you pay for and with this mid-range model vacuum cleaner, you get a lot. Karcher has designed the product with efficiency in mind – so users get quick cleaning and drying of flat surfaces.
Karcher promises a streak-free, drip-free finish when used with its own branded cleaning products, although any window cleaner will do.
In addition to the product itself, you get a spray bottle, a micro-fibre head to remove stubborn dirt and two suction nozzles: 170mm for smaller windows and 280mm for larger ones.
At just 700g, the Kärcher WV 5 Plus N feels light in the hand and it performs exceptionally well on any flat shiny surface. However, its battery system isn’t as appealingly efficient as the marginally more expensive WV 6 Premium reviewed above.
3. Leifheit 51113 Window Vacuum A vacuum with long battery life and quick charging time Specifications Weight: 739g Run time: Up to 45 minutes Comes with: Accessories are extra Reasons to buy + Removes water from flat surfaces + Retains water when used at all angles Reasons to avoid – Reviews say charge time is more like 30 minutes Today’s Best Deals View at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Leifheit has optimised this window vac so it removes water and condensation from windows well. It promises 360 degree non-leak manoeuvrability, which means skylights aren’t a problem for it either.
Working alongside a decent window cleaner, Leifheit says the gadget should provide a streak-free finish, although reviewers say the the hoover head that it comes with struggles to get right into the edges.
While cheaper than the Karcher at the top of our list, the accessories for this window vacuum must be paid for as an extra. Accessories include Leifheit’s click-system telescopic handles, which are perfect for reaching conservatory roofs.
4. Kärcher WV 2 Best budget-priced Kärcher for shiny windows Specifications Weight: 0.6kg Run time: 35 minutes Comes with: 280mm suction head Reasons to buy + Streak-free and drip-free finish + Light in the hand Reasons to avoid – Doesn’t come with solution bottle
The smaller sibling of the WV5 comes with just one long 280mm suction head and no squeezy bottle with microfibre cloth like the more expensive models. This means you’ll need to reach for some Blitz paper towels or a sponge and a bottle of Windolene or Kärcher’s proprietary window cleaner to give the window a pre-wash before using the WV2 to suck up the liquid.
You do save quite a few quid this way, mind, though it has to be said that the WV2 isn’t as pleasant to use as the more expensive WV5 and WV6 reviewed above, even though it’s a fraction lighter.
5. Minky Rechargeable Window Vac A lightweight window vacuum cleaner with good manoeuvrability Specifications Weight: 750g Run time: 30 minutes Comes with: Spray bottle, microfibre cloth and polishing cloth Reasons to buy + Cleans windows, mirrors and tiles + Lightweight Reasons to avoid – No head accessories included Today’s Best Deals View at Amazon (opens in new tab)
If you’re looking for a window vacuum cleaner that’s lightweight as well as powerful, this one ought to fit the bill. Offering up a 30 minute battery life, it’s not the longest runner in the list but enough time to clean a fair amount of windows.
Minky boasts that the quick and powerful motor also hoovers up condensation and steam, storing it in the 150ml storage tank, which is larger than both Karcher products.
While cheaper than the Karcher models, the accessories included with the hoover are limited, with a spray bottle, polishing cloth and just one head in the box.
