Rega Tonearm Specifications

Low effective mass 11 grams

Effective length 240 mm

Overhang 17.2 mm

Offset angle 23 degrees

Mounting distance: platter centre to arm hole centre 221.7 mm

Diameter of mounting hole 23 – 25mm but 24mm is preferable as it allows threaded VTA adjuster to be fitted

Size of base mounting nut 32mm A/F (across flats)

Maximum armboard thickness 27mm

Total Weight 436 grams

Capacitance 0.002uF

Resistance 0.002 ohms

The tip of the stylus should be 240mm from the pivot. In approximate terms, the armboard mounting hole should be such that the cartridge stylus will “overhang” the record centre (spindle) by a distance of around 17mm for an arm that is of 240mm Effective Length (distance from stylus to armboard mounting hole centre). Roughly check this by swinging the stylus over the record spindle.

Mass of Rega RB303 tonearm?

It might well be lower on the 303 since one change is a thinner casting on the arm tube.

The only people who’ll know for sure (hopefully!) are Rega so perhaps ask them directly.

Another option would be to rest for the LF resonance with a cartridge of known and consistent compliance and work back.

Cartridge Compliance

Below 8hz and the cartridge is more susceptible to the effects from record warps, sub chassis movement and footfall. This pushes subsonics through the system, eating power and causing bass drivers to flap in some circumstances. Both can impact sonics and a bass/mid driver impersonating a sink plunger doesn’t tend to sound at its best. It’s especially important to avoid this happening with ported two-way designs since you’ll get audible modulation of the critical mid frequencies.Play a solo piano through a two-way with pulsing main driver cone and delight in the warblingMuch above 13hz and the resonance can be triggered and excited by music signal, and you’ll usually see some slight lift in cartridge output at the bottom end.You don’t have to get the combo within the blue area – it’s just preferable.Arm damping if available will widen the window and also help even a good match.Don’t get paranoid though – if it sound good it is good.

RB330 Tonearm

The legendary RB330

Designed using the latest 3D CAD & CAM technology, the new RB330 is the culmination of more than 35 years of tonearm design experience. Featuring a brand new bearing housing and our latest tonearm tube designed using intelligent redistribution of mass, ensure this arm will exhibit fewer points of possible resonance.

Extreme stability with almost friction free movement from the new high precision bearing assemblies guarantees to gather more information from your vinyl than ever before. Featuring a new bias assembly, re-designed stiffer vertical bearing housing, integrated arm clip and an improved spring housing with easier to read numbers. Rega made, new low capacitance phono cable with Neutrik plugs. Improved lower friction, precision horizontal and vertical bearings.

Rega is famed for its tonearm designs. One unique characteristic of these designs is the achievement of near frictionless movement horizontally and vertically whilst having no measurable free play in the bearing assemblies (and in reality one or two microns of pre load). So, why has Rega spent over thirty years and invested so heavily in this area of tonearm design where the removal of even microns of movement has been pursued?

Edit Delete Binar, there have been many posts concerning the 103R’s advertised compliance. Most believe it is higher though still a LOMC. I’ve used the 103r with a RB250 and RB300 with great results. You should be just fine without doing anything special.

I do recommend looking up TWL’s tweak which uses some fishing weights as a means to improve stability of the Rega arms. Very cheap but very effective tweak.

Edit Delete I’ve learned a little more about this issue.

The RB250 has an effective mass of 11g, the

DL-103R weighs 8.5 and has a compliance of 5cu.

So, the resonant frequency of this combo according

to the formula I’ve found is 16.1 Hz, which is

out of the safe range of 9-14 Hz.

Wonder if that 2 Hz will make a audible difference,

even if subtle or indirect? I’d need to increase

tonearm mass by 7g to get into the window.

In deference to the assurance of Dan_ed, I wonder

what the best way to add a quarter ounce to my

cart/arm is? A metal shim? Brass bolts?

Edit Delete Hi Binar

Your calculations are correct, but a DL103 compliance is higher than 5cu/dyne. A number of posters on the vinyl asylum had tested them and I believe found it to be around 12cy/dyne.

In short, it will work well with your RB.

If you are skeptical and want to add some weight, I suggest you use some blue tack.

Paul

Edit Delete Do not read too much into Denon’s compliance number. If you do a search at Vinyl Asylum, there is a general concensus there that Denon’s number is not particularly accurate and that the real compliance number is closer to 9cu. A member there has measured the reasonant frequency of his 103R in a 10.5g SME V to be just under 9 and many people feel that the Denon works well in many medium mass arms as well as those with higher mass.

Try it as it is and see how you make out. If you feel compelled with adding mass to your arm, I’d suggest using blu tak on top of the headshell and not adding more than about 3-4 grams to start off with.

Names of Tonearm parts

Introduction

The RB303 is the latest version of Rega’s most popular tonearm.

Replacing the hugely successful RB301, the RB303 utilises a

completely redesigned arm tube. This tube design uses intelligent

re-distribution of mass to optimise performance and reduce stress

on the bearings even further. This ensures improved tracking and

maximises the amount of information a cartridge can extract from the

record surface. The hand assembled Rega RB303 tonearm is a

precision crafted product. To create the low friction levels and meet

minimum mass requirements, many parts of the arm are delicate and

require careful handling. The arm should always be treated with

respect and under no circumstances should any part be removed or

tampered with.

Arm balancing and setup

With the cartridge correctly mounted and with the stylus guard

removed, ensure that the tracking force dial and Bias adjustment are

set to zero. Adjust the balance weight until the arm is “floating” with

the stylus approximately 1mm clear of the record. Note: It is normal

for the arm to swing back towards the arm clip position even with the

bias set at zero. Therefore it is advisable to gently hold the arm

bearing carrier (just below the tracking dial) thus preventing

horizontal movement during the balancing procedure.

Applying tracking pressure

Once the arm is balanced rotate the tracking force adjustment dial to

the required tracking force. Numbers ‘0’ to ‘3’ are marked on the dial.

If in doubt it is usually advisable to use a tracking force that

corresponds with the upper limits of the cartridge manufacturer’s

range.

Applying Anti – Skating (bias) adjustment

Set the bias adjustment slider to the same figure as the cartridge

tracking force pressure quoted by your cartridge manufacturer.

Note: This is not critical and a figure between 1.0 & 1.5 will normally be

suitable for moving magnet cartridges and 1.5 & 2.0 for most moving

coil cartridges.

Fully extended 0.0 First position 1.0 Second Position 2.0

Simply push the slider in to the required anti skating setting .Your arm

is now balanced, setup and ready to use. If you have any doubts

regarding installation or setup please contact your official Rega

dealer who will be able to carry out the work for you. Thank you for

purchasing this Rega product and we wish you many hours of musical

enjoyment.

vinyljunky Anyone on here use a zyx cart on a rega rb303 tonearm:scratch:

walpurgis Had a couple on an RB300 on a Techie. It was crap. I sighed with relief when I got the Mission 774 back on there. 🙂

Bigman80 Run from that rega. You deserve better.

Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk

smangus I have a.ZYX on a rega300 . Didn’t sound right until I added a 5g Decca weight to it. Sounds good to me now. They like a bit of weight.

vinyljunky My mate has a rega rp6 he likes the sound signature of my zyx r100 Yatra so just a tentative enquiry it sounds like a poor match the zyx cart seems to like low mass arms any thoughts on alternative carts for his rb303 he could do low output mc or mm

vinyljunky Just to add his rb303 is factory fitted with the rega exact I find it dull bit too laid back, never been a fan of rega carts.

petrat Depending on budget, I’d strongly recommend the new Rega Ania. I recently heard it on the current RB330+Planar 3 and was very impressed. Improved further by fitting the rega psu, too. Well impressed with the combo … lively and musical, not dull in the slightest.

mac72 RB303 has effective mass of approx. 11.5 gram which is just enough for Zyx carts , bit more weight at the headshell would be beneficial ,though, main disadvantage IMO is lack of azimuth adjustment which disqualifies more advanced stylus cuts .

I would look at Nagaoka carts (MP110-200), lots of fun and not very fussy when it comes to VTA and HTA.

hifi_dave I have used several of the Zyx cartridges on various Rega arms with no problems at all. I did add a bit of extra mass in the headshell to improve the bass but the arms do work well.

Having said that, the new Rega Ania cartridge is superb and good value now that all the Japanese cartridges have increased considerably in price, because of the £ v Yen.

smangus Yes the 5g added made a lot of difference to the bass and overall clarity. It sounded thin before this. It’s an affordable stop gap until I get a new arm hehehe.

vinyljunky Good suggestion Peter I’ve not read much on the rega Ania I’ll investigate further

vinyljunky Dave are you selling the new rega ania and how many spondoolies

vinyljunky Just checked the price I think it’s a bit out of his league

mac72 I’ve seen new AT-33PTG on PFM not long time ago @£300 if I remember rightly , hell a lot of cart for the money , certainly not dull or laid back

vinyljunky Interesting Slav I’ll check them out

hifi_dave Yes, on dem and in stock. £498 retail.

They have been very popular because there really is nothing anywhere near it below a grand. That and the Hanas.

moodybuilder ive got the hana sl and can say it punches well above its price, best sub 1000gbp ive heard by along way

vinyljunky He’s looking at an ortofon quintet blue mc apparently these were a replacement for the rondo range of carts not a lot of info or reviews online anyone on here got one and a heads up on there sound signature I know this is system dependant but a general idea would be helpful

hifi_dave To my ears the Quintet range is bland. Far better off with a Hana or Ania.

petrat Why a mc cart? On a Rega arm, I’d personally have an Audio Note IQ1 at that price point. Heck of a cartridge, with replacable stylus. If your mate isn’t a hifi junkie, that’ll do him for evermore. It’d be a revalation after the Exact

BTW, I recently auditioned the RP6 directly against the Planar 3 (with the extra power supply), and, yes, it is more relaxed in its presentation. I would have the Planar 3 plus optional PSU personally … much more lively … the RP6 was actually rather dull and boring (both turntables with the Ania). I wonder if Rega think the same, as I believe they’ve just discontinued the RP6?

p.s. why don’t you just try your cart on his arm to see if the ‘dullness’ is due to his current cartridge, or whether it’s actually the whole turntable that’s the problem?

Ive got the Quintet Blue and its great value for money (cost me £228 a year ago and I see it priced at £268 today). Its got a typical Ortofon sound which I like – detailed and smooth. To be honest I don’t notice a huge difference between it and the 2M Black I have on another TT.

In respect of being bland; I dont like cartridges like the ATOC9 which I also own and find to be too toppy and bassy – bit like modern speakers and headphones. My preference is very neutral if possible.

I learnt long ago to ignore reviews and others comments and listen before buying. In fact the Blue was demod alongside other Ortofon carts at a show when it was very quiet so I heard it against the higher range also – not as good but an awful lot cheaper.

Yeah, loved the Quintet Black, my first ever mc – smooth and detailed for sure.

Just as good as my 2M Black before it, difference in my experience was a tad more transparency and delineation of revealing subtle detail of bass textures etc.

Bass was less weighty, which might lead some to feel it’s overall presentation a bit on the soft side.

Kind of makes sense really as if it did have that weight it would be just too close to it’s much more pricey, bigger brother the Cadenza Black.
