The Koning Glove

The Koning Glove from St Mark will soon be here, ready for purchase in our shop. It is a glove that is made specifically for Historical European Martial Arts–HEMA–and classical fencing. The glove protects your hands when sparring and competing with heavier weapons in Historical Fencing; such as longsword, sabre, or single sword.

About the name

The Koning, or King, was the winner of the competitions held by the Franco-Belgian fencing guilds in the 15th century. He sat in the guild’s ruling council for one year and had the right to speak first at their meetings.

Koning Gloves Medium Pair

Koning Gloves –

November 2019 – still no word on availability, we will update this page as soon as we hear anything positive.

The Koning glove is a reimagined fencing glove with a classical look, which embodies the arts we are reviving. It is made with care to detail, and from the best materials available. The leather in the glove are a supple goat and sheepskin for great movement and feel, with a vegetable tanned cow leather side for the upper part. Both leathers are from European animals and produced in Europe in accordance with strict environmental standards.

Inside the Koning there is a thick hard shell cover that takes the brunt of the force of the blows. Underneath that, we have a special lamination of soft padding materials for the best energy absorption possible. The design is made to allow movement of fingers, and it draws from a classical European heritage, using quatrefoil as decoration on the floating cuff that protects the wrist. The glove has also been reinforced with double leather in especially exposed areas, such as across the palm, the inside of the thumb, and the side of the index finger. The slit across the knuckles provides improved movement. The Koning is suitable for heavy drilling, competing and sparring with such weapons as longsword, backsword, single sword, and sabre.

The name of the glove, the Koning, comes from the King of the Franco-Belgian fencing guilds. Whoever won the guilds tournament was named Koning and earned special priviliges for that year, if someone became Koning for three consecutive years they were named emperors, Kaisers, and earned those priviliges for life.

The Koning is approved for competition at all major HEMA tournaments including Swordfish, Longpoint, the Nordic League, the Swedish National Championships, Purpleheart Open, Longpoint, etc.

Fighters with Size 13 hands have used the Mediums, but it requires working the leather longer.

The St. Mark Koning Glove

The St. Mark Koning Glove is one of the new hot five fingered gloves on the HEMA market. Axel Petterson and Anders Linnard two really high profile fencer in the HEMA community developed them to be used for longsword and other weapons. I think they debuted at Swordfish 2015, and started to ship them by the end of March, 2016.

I haven’t had the pleasure/opportunity of trying them out, but I collected some reviews, videos and text about it for you.

Koning Glove (not broken in) weapon/mobility test by TheHunter1337:

Some sparring from the HROARR Youtube channel using these gloves:

Protective Gear — Central Iowa Historical Fencing Guild

SPES provides some of the most popular fencing jackets in HEMA as well as other bits of protective gear that practitioners will need. This is another company based out of Poland, but there are a few US vendors for their gear as well.

— Glove Suppliers

Hand protection is something of a holy grail in the HEMA world, especially for longsword. You are always going to have some degree of dexterity, protection, and affordability, but never excellent in all three, if even two.

You are basically going to be fighting against your gloves in tournament and free sparring in an effort to adapt to the loss of dexterity. That isn’t to say that there aren’t good options, however; just as with any other piece of gear, they are going to restrict your natural ability, to some degree. As it turns out, hands are fragile and softening a three pound steel bar is difficult, to say the least.

That said, here are some common and ‘loved’ options (in terms of steel longsword fighting).

Brine Lacrosse Gloves

The minimum. Don’t use these for steel longswords/feders. These are okay for nylon longswords.

Lacrosse gloves, in general, are a good investment for beginners and are great for single handed weapons, especially those with complicated hilts and crossguards.

Warrior Lacrosse Gloves

These are simply another popular choice of lacrosse gloves. The sentiments listed above ring true for these.

Red Dragon Armoury (The HEMA Shop)

CASIberia also stocks them.

Purpleheart Armoury stocks them.

Carl Ryrberg’s impression

These seem to be some sort of lacrosse glove variant that has been reinforced for HEMA. However, in the end, that is what they basically are: lacrosse gloves. Going with what I said before, these are actually pretty popular for single-hand weapons, steel or nylon. I am not a big fan of the huge branding, however.

UPDATE (2015 JULY 30th): These are probably going to be banned or something. A lot of people destroyed their hands wearing these at Longpoint. Interestingly enough, Axel used these for the Open Longsword tournament, but he probably doesn’t have to worry about broken fingers…..since he is him…..

SPES Historical Fencing Gear

What is pictured below are the SPES Heavy Gloves. The latest version of the gloves are not open-palm, so you do not have to wear gloves under them.

I plan on getting these gloves in the future I have these gloves and they are my babies. They only complaints I have heard about them are three fold:

Bulky. These gloves are big, due to the large curved plates. There is typically about a half-inch or less between the padding and plates. The padding itself, however, is quite thick, as well. This can lead to hand hits that wouldn’t happen without gloves.

Although the protection for most of the hand is quite good, the thumb is probably the weakest part. Not really sure why. It just isn’t as protected as the rest of the hand, possibly due to the fact that the thumb is a lonesome digit while the rest are enclosed in a mitten.

The thumb, again. Apparently, the way the thumb is set up, it makes it hard to do some complicated strikes like schielhau.

I don’t know how durable they are, but they seem easy to fix if you know how to rivet and sew.

SPES also offers a light glove, suitable for saber, rapier, and other single-hand weapons.

Comfort Fencing

Great protection, great dexterity, hit or miss with durability, hit or miss customer service, allegedly long wait times (Though they have recently (2014 Oct 19) announced that they’ll be getting back on track soon).

They also have a tendency to rip up cording on weapon hilts.

They also have various types of gloves, suitable for different sorts of weapons.

Black Lance Technologies

Great gloves, but they aren’t accepting orders due to the large amount of concurrent orders they have to fill.

That said, I heard that they had decent protection and great dexterity.

Durability is questionable, but most of the people I know that use them has had no problems.

ProGauntlet | Facebook page

These gloves have been in a Kickstarter funded R&D phase for a couple of years, now. They are supposed to be HEMA’s answer to hand protection. People from technical demos are saying good things, and I hope these gloves are everything they are promising, but I am not holding my breathe.

According to some, it looks like they’ve veered off into military/police(riot) applications. It still could work for HEMA; just let it be known that they don’t seem to actively be targeting HEMA specifically, anymore.

*some time later*

Okay. They kind of backtracked and went back to focusing on the HEMA market. They have been restructuring their business, this whole time. Still no major developments on the glove, itself, that they have disclosed to us.

Sparring Gloves

Creative name. These are made by Ensifer in Poland. They seems to be the most popular gloves in the market, right now, and it looks like everyone in the NHFL has a pair. Dexterity is more limiting than the SPES Heavies, imo. They have two options, mittens and split gloves. I don’t think people with these ever complain about broken fingers.

You can order a long or short cuff version with custom colours from Scott Brown.

There is also a new option from sparringgloves: Sparring Glove Special?

These are essentially their old gloves, but improved and features hard, individual fingers. Fingered gloves have been a really hit and miss experience for HEMA, but sparringgloves is a proven company. I have access to this product and will try and post a brief review soon.

Absolute Fencing

Cheap version of Sparring Gloves. Also available on Amazon. It could work out, but you get what you pay for. It really sucked to not have my dominant hand for a couple of weeks when my thumb broke. Just letting you know. I absolutely cannot recommend these.

Absolute Fencing also now has available a new pair of gloves called the ‘AF HEMA Deluxe Fighting Gloves’.

I had these gloves are the better part of a year. They are decent, but definitely not a long term solution, especially for tournaments. Dexterity is awful with them, especially with the pinky, and mine started to fall apart. There is no protection for the side of the fingers and strikes to the hand still hurt. Like….a lot. Also, the cuffs do not make crossing your arms fun.

Destroyer Modz(Facebook) | Website

I knew of Destroyer Modz for some time, now, but didn’t really get to see their work until Longpoint, where they ran a really successful booth and had a great presence in general. Josh Parise and co. are really nice and awesome guys.

Their glove is interesting, as it is a modified version of two gloves: The Red Dragon gloves and the AF Deluxe Fighting gloves. What they do is they cut the cuff of the AF gloves short, remove the digits, and insert a modified Red Dragon glove into the AF gloves. Plates are then added, mainly to the index finger and pinky.

I actually quite like them, especially since I own (read: disowned) the AF Deluxe Fighting Gloves. This is a vast improvement over the original respective gloves but probably is not financially viable, unless you own some of the parts required, already. One issue I have with them is that the fingers are kept too far apart, due to the ‘beefiness’ of the individual digits. It is more of an annoyance, really. I didn’t get to fight with them, but they seem protective and dexterous. I think they sell a kit to do this modification or may even do the mod for you.

Although promising, I’d wait a bit until people’s hands have been knocked around a bit in them; they are definitely worth keeping tabs on, though.

Steel Gauntlets

Expensive. I don’t know much about steel gauntlets. They vary by a very large margin and come in all levels of quality, shapes, sizes, and protection. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone complain about broken fingers wearing them, though. I am not a big fan of them, regardless, since I am a big proponent of presenting HEMA as a not LARPy or SCA thing.

Neyman Fencing THOKK Gloves | Facebook

This is a new group that popped in Poland. They offer a whole line of fencing equipment, including jackets and pants. These gloves seem similar to the Sparring Gloves and also comes in different colours.

St. Mark Fencing Clothes and Equipment | Facebook

St. Mark is the business run by Axel Petterson and Anders Linnard; what else is there to say?

They recently announced a new glove that they are designing called the Koning Glove. Anders used a prototype for Swordfish 2015. They seem rather good. Excellent, even. Everything they have shown makes this seem like the holy grail of HEMA gloves:

Backed by HEMA star/legend Axel, preserves dexterity, withstands feder hits, not at all bulky (in fact, it kind of looks like a beefier standard fencing glove for rapier or Olympic fencing with a ‘historical’/leather aesthetic). They even one up Progauntlet by having a physical model out there, being used, in plain sight. Everyone is hoping it comes in black; we’ll see.
