Russ Klein was born on June 23, 1917 in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. He was married to Lois Lamont. He died on February 10, 1996 in Simi Valley, California, USA.

CHARLIE PARLATO featured trumpet player and singer, was born in Fredonia, NY on February 16, 1919. An alumni of Ithaca Conservatory, he started out first with Kay Kyser, Dave Rose and Tennessee Ernie Ford before joining Welk in 1962. He has also performed with greats such as Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams. Even at 5 foot 5 inches, he possessed a lot of talent in not just his trumpet work, but in many of the show’s novelty skits and choral numbers, and he also can play the drums and is a scratch tennis player. Charlie also enjoyed classical music and lists blue fish as his favorite food, and he and his wife Margaret had five children, eleven grand-children and four great-grandchildren. Sadly, he passed away from natural causes on September 8, 2007 at his home in Oak Park, CA.

KENNY TRIMBLE trombonist was born on March 1, 1919 and grew up in Milwaukee, WI. Teaching himself the trombone at age five, he later became the Wisconsin State champion trombonist in area schools. Before joining the Champagne Music Makers in 1957, he studied his craft at the Milwaukee State Teachers College, Tex Beneke, Glenn Miller, Sam Donahue and Ray Anthony. He was first chair until Don Staples joined the band in 1966, but remained on for the show’s duration. Kenny, who passed away in 1991, had two kids, one of them Jimmy is a respected trombone player, and his grandson John is a talented trumpet player that performs regularly in Branson.

ALADDIN PALLANTE violinist and pianist was born September 20, 1912 in New York, NY. Learning both instruments at an young age, he went out to Southern California in 1945 to seek his fortune by starting out with the Edgar Bergen Show. Joining Welk in 1955, the same year the show went nationwide on ABC, Aladdin became a fan favorite, not just for his musical craftsmanship, but also for his poems and dramatic readings. He was also best friends with Bob Lido, and the two have appeared on numerous musical and comedy skits on the show. A fixture on the silver screen, he appeared in movies such as “Deep In The Heart Of Texas” and “Easy To Love.” He remained with the show until 1967, and passed away on June 9, 1970.

ORIE AMODEO saxophonist and woodwinds was born in Mechanicville, NY on March 9, 1921. Starting first on violin, by thirteen he taught himself to play all the woodwind instruments, and that quickly led to work with local dance bands and the Tri-City Symphony. Among his other jobs upon moving out to California was a stint as a stagehand at NBC and other major Hollywood studios and other freelancing work. Joined Welk in 1945, can play flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, conta-bass clarinet, alto sax, and tenor sax. In addition to his weekly musical chores, he was also band photographer and played on all the Welk albums from the late 40’s through 1970, when he left the band. He later formed his own Count Basie style band known as the Orie J Orchestra. Sadly passed away in 1998 at the age of seventy-seven.

RUSS KLEIN saxophonist was born in Worcester, MA on July 23, 1917. Began playing the woodwinds at age 11, and by 14 turned professional. Played in the forties for the Freddie Martin band with another talented Worcester native and future Welk member Norman Bailey. Later, he played with on the Red Skelton Show and with David Rose before joining the Music Makers in 1957. First playing 1st Alto Sax & 1st clarinet, but later moved up to Tenor Sax soloist and the curved Soprano Sax with the Hotsy Totsy Boys. His efforts helped “modernize” the Welk style with his jazzy sound and superb musicianship. After the death of his first wife, he married Lawrence’s long-time personal secretary Lois Lamont in 1975 and stayed together until his death on February 10, 1996.

NORMAN BAILEY trumpet player was born February 6, 1913 and like Russ Klein, grew up in Worcester, MA.

Starting out with his first $5 trumpet at 13, he graduated from Becker Jr. College doing freelance work with other bands in between. Joined Freddy Martin’s band in 1934 as his first trumpet player, where he remained with until 1951 when he went to work in missile development for Northrup Aircraft. A year later, he returned to full time music when he joined up with Lawrence Welk, and from the days at the Aragon, at KTLA and later on ABC and in syndication, his trumpet playing was the stuff of legend….tales that he was so good, that never had to practice. He was known as “Iron Lips” by his fellow Music Makers, mainly because he never got tired! Left Welk in 1973, and passed away on July 11, 1984.

DAVE EDWARDS saxophonist and woodwinds, was born January 11, 1941 in Tuskegee, AL. After graduating from Auburn University (War Eagle!), Dave performed either freelance or with other bands such as Glenn Miller and Richard Maltby before joining NORAD. Became a Welk Music Maker in 1968 and occupied first chair until he left in 1978. The lanky Southerner, along with his wife Phyllis, and their two sons David and Charles, moved to Central Florida where he continued to perform in several big bands until his unexpected death from cardiac arrest on August 12, 2000 at the age of fifty-nine.

DICK CATHCART trumpet player and choral vocalist was born November 6, 1924 in Michigan City, IN. Dick came from a family of musicians that included older brothers Tom, Jack and Jimmy who had his own band for a while. Before he practiced his craft on the Welk Show from 1962 until 1968, he made four films from 1954 to 1961 and also provided the trumpet sound track for both the film and TV versions of “Pete Kelly’s Blues” with his friend Jack Webb, known as TV’s Sgt. Joe Friday from “Dragnet.” Already the father of three from a previous marriage, he married Peggy Lennon on May 24, 1964 and had six more children. Sadly he died from complications from cancer on November 8, 1993 in Los Angeles, CA.

BILL PAGE reeds player was born in Chicago, IL on September 11, 1925. A World War II veteran who served in the European stage; Bill attended Wright Junior College and played with several bands such as Del Courtney and Boyd Raeburn before joining Welk in 1951, playing about 14 woodwind instruments including not only all the saxophones, the clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, piccolo, bassoon, oboe, and English Horn. He was often featured in numbers in which he played about 11 instruments going through all of them as the band accompanied him. Plus, he was know to have played two clarinets at once! After leaving the Welk organization in 1965, he continued to perform with famous artists such as Barry Manilow, Ted Mack, Frank Gorshin and Judy Garland. Bill, the father of two grown children, Scotty and Tanya, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the age of 91.

He attended Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, where he played the saxophone and reeds (Multireedist) with The Auburn Knights Orchestra; Edwards would later try to complete his education at California State University, Los Angeles during the late-1980s while residing in Burbank. Out of school early from Auburn University (having played with The Auburn Knights Orchestra and singer Toni Tennille) he would play on the road with Richard Maltby and then with the Glenn Miller Orchestra before being drafted into the United States Army and stationed with the NORAD band in Colorado Springs, CO. Armed Forces and NORAD band [ edit ] While stationed at the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) during the 1960s, Dave Edwards would serve in the United States Army and play in the American/Canadian, joint armed serves NORAD Commanders Jazz Band[2] alongside future Lawrence Welk Show musicians Richard Maloof and Johnny Zell.[3] Stationed in Colorado Springs, this unit became one of the elite musical groups of the armed forces during the Cold War/Vietnam era due to the plethora of talented, young musicians being drafted into military service. Edwards would first meet longtime musical associates Dave Wolpe, Warren Luening, Bob Payne, and Larry Ford while stationed at Colorado Springs. He toured extensively with the NORAD musical groups to include appearances at Carnegie Hall (May 1966), the Hollywood Bowl and Disneyland (September 1966), Expo ’67 – Montreal World’s Fair, the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (August and September 1967), the CBS The Mike Douglas Show, the Today Show, and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.[2] The Lawrence Welk Show 1968-1979 [ edit ] After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Lawrence Welk Show orchestra in early 1968. In his first season with the show he replaced Mahlon Clark on 2nd alto sax in the reed section and then moved later to playing the lead alto/reed chair with Russ Klein moving to tenor.[4][5] Edwards performed on The Lawrence Show while it was carried on ABC-TV (up to 1971) and then in syndication; he left in 1979, when he was replaced by reedman Skeets Herfurt.[6][7][8] The sax/reed section for The Lawrence Welk Show would finally be settled into having Edwards-lead alto/Section Leader, Bob Davis-2nd Alto Sax/lead Flute/Piccolo, Henry Cuesta-2nd tenor/clarinet soloist, Russ Klein- lead tenor sax, and Dick Dale- baritone/bass clarinet. During this time Edwards proved to be one of the finest lead alto players for big bands and orchestras of a generation being able to fit any style, display incredible consistency, and having total command of playing lead piccolo/flute/clarinet/soprano sax/alto sax or even the oboe. The schedule for rehearsing and taping the show was rigid, constant, and sometimes hectic; the musicians were expected to play almost exclusively for the Welk television production rehearsals plus live taping (with studio audience) every week at the Hollywood Palladium from 1968 to 1976, 1976-77 at the Hollywood Palace, and CBS Television City from 1977 to 1979.[9][10] Later professional work and style [ edit ] Edwards was prominent on movie and T.V. soundtracks on shows such as the ABC Captain & Tennille Variety Hour; he is most well known for playing the credits theme (soprano saxophone) for the 1980s T.V. show Moonlighting. During this time he lived in Burbank, CA near NBC Studios. While working in Los Angeles during the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s Edwards played and recorded with a wide range of artists to include Ernestine Anderson, Nat Pierce, Roger Neumann, Frank Capp,[11] Frank Sinatra Jr.[12] and Madeline Vergari.[13] Though his musical style could readily transform to the many venues or artists he played with, Edwards’ personal saxophone playing was most heavily influenced by the alto saxophonists Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley.[14] This style was much better shown when Edwards had the rare opportunity to be featured (at length) in 1987 on the premiere of Charlie Richard’s Suite for Alto Sax and Jazz Orchestra. Edwards later relocated in the 1990s to the Orlando, Florida region (with his wife Phyllis and sons David and Charles) and continued to work for Disneyworld, several bands locally, and across the country.[15] Edwards commented on the need to move away from the difficulties of living in the Los Angeles area and wanted to relocate back to the South.
